Program Covers For Church Meeting Feature Book Of Mormon Research
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
FARMS has helped to prepare program covers, suitable for sacrament meetings, baptisms, and other Church meetings, that feature information about the Book of Mormon on the back page. The idea for the covers came from Earl Carlsen of Spokane, and his encouragement and generous contributions have made the project possible.

Can The 1834 Affidavits Attacking The Smith Family Be Trusted?, Daniel C. Peterson
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The character and claims of Joseph Smith are fundamental to the claims of the Church he founded. Knowing this, critics of the Prophet have contended for more than a century and a half that he and his family were the kind of people from whom nobody would want to buy a used car, much less receive a plan of salvation.

Farms-Led Expedition Examines Likely Candidate For Lehi's Old-World Bountiful
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The much-delayed and long-awaited examination of Wadi Sayq, a likely site for Old World Bountiful, became a reality recently. In April, a team of researchers examined the port area of Khor Kharfot ("Fort Inlet" in English) through which the Wadi Sayq enters the Indian Ocean on the southern coast of Oman, at the extreme western end near the border with Yemen. Their findings indicate that Khor Kharfot may be the site of Lehi's Bountiful.

Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The April 1993 Ensign magazine contained an article discussing three New Testament words, restoration, endow, and perfect. Those studies were drawn from a longer paper by John W. Welch published by F.A.R.M.S. That paper similarly discussed a total of twelve biblical Greek words. If you missed that paper when it was first offered in 1991, you may want to read it now. For your convenience, it is relisted on the current order form.

Tours To Israel: Are You Interested?
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
F.A.R.M.S. has been approached by a nonprofit educational company offering to arrange tours of Israel and surrounding areas for F.A.R.M.S. subscribers. The accommodations and the itineraries look very good and the cost would be very competitive--a recent example was a ten-day tour for about $1700. Interested F.A.R.M.S. subscribers could join a tour at almost any time, and a special F.A.R.M.S. tour may be arranged in February if there is enough interest. In addition, travellers who recruit five additional tour members can travel free.

Ancient Studies Features In A Recent Issue Of Byu Studies
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Readers interested in ancient research and Mormon studies will welcome several articles in the latest issue of BYU Studies. A short study by Donald Parry discusses a new insight into Psalm 24:6, widely recognized as a temple psalm. Parry suggests that the Hebrew dor ("generation") might be read as dur ("circle"), possibly alluding to a prayer circle of those who seek the Lord. Psalm 24 may reflect ancient pre-Mosaic temple practices, or it may prophetically look forward to the post-Mosaic temple era, when higher ordinances are known to mankind.

Connections Between The Visions Of Lehi And Nephi, John W. Welch
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Although a simple book in several respects, the Book of Mormon is also marvelously complex, as in the interconnections between several of its texts. No example of this phenomenon is more instructive than the case of Lehi's and Nephi's visions.

Some of the most interesting current research on the Book of Mormon was reported on during the sessions of the F.A.R.M.S. brown bag seminar through the 1992-1993 school year. Fourteen Latter-day Saint scholars from Brigham Young University and elsewhere gave participants a glimpse of their most recent findings on a wide variety of topics.

Marvin Roberson, longtime friend of F.A.R.M.S., has brought to our attention an opportunity to supply the Utah State Prison with books, articles, videos, and tapes about the Book of Mormon. Several inmates in this correctional institution are eager to read books like Nibley's Approaching Zion and to watch programs like "Unraveling the Mysteries of the Dead Sea Scrolls." Anyone who has worked with prisoners knows that some desire to repent, but the way back is hard. Great needs cry out for strong resources.

Paper Details The Chronology Of The Book Of Mormon
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
A new preliminary paper, "Introduction to Book of Mormon Chronology: The Principal Prophecies, Calendars, and Dates," by Randall Spackman, examines the temporal context of the Book of Mormon. Much as John Sorenson has done for the geography of the Book of Mormon, Spackman attempts carefully to lay out the issues that must be addressed in any treatment of the chronology of the book and present a plausible and enlightening correlation between the chronology of the Book of Mormon and other historical events and time-keeping systems.

The Sword Of Laban As A Symbol Of Divine Authority, Brett L. Holbrook
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The sword that Nephi took from Laban played an important role in Nephite history, not only as the model after which the Nephites later made swords to defend themselves, but also and perhaps more importantly as a symbol of the legitimate authority of the Nephite rulers, beginning with Nephi himself.

William J. The points he makes are sound and may prompt new lines of research for serious students of these subjects.

In "The Formation of the Canon of the Old Testament," in Religion and Law: Biblical, Judaic, and Islamic Perspectives, (edited by Edwin Firmage, Bernard Weiss, and John Welch and published in 1990 by Eisenbrauns), David Noel Freedman discusses the legacy of Moses and his Torah to the Western world. This legacy, he believes, is "the merger of law and religion, the inseparable joint expression of the divine will, communicated by his prophet. If true religion involves the right relationship between humanity and deity, then the law 1s the way in which that relationship is defined and regulated." Freedman concludes …

Did Book Of Mormon Names Persist In Ancient America?
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
T he name Zenock, from the Book of Mormon, and Tenoch, the Nahuatl name of a semi-legendary priest/leader of the Aztecs, may be linguistically related. The Book of Mormon refers five times to the Israelite prophet Zenock, spelled Zenoch in the Original Manuscript of the Book of Mormon (1 Nephi 19:10, c. 580 B.C.; Alma 33:15 and 34:7, c. 74 B.C.; Helaman 8:20, c. 23 B.C.; and 3 Nephi 10:16, c. A.D. 34). Those passages remind the Nephites and the future readers of the Book of Mormon about the prophecies of Zenoch concerning Christ, which were contained in …

Symposium Fosters Lively Discussion Of Ancient Temples
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
The more than 1500 people who attended the sixth annual F.A.R.M.S. Symposium were rewarded with a wealth of information about temples of the ancient world. Elder Marion D. Hanks set the tone for the day in his keynote address. He reflected on quiet, daily miracles that occur in the temple and the desire that David expressed in Psalm 27 to "dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord."
