Health Care: An Economic Priority, Dolores L. Mitchell Mar 1990

Health Care: An Economic Priority, Dolores L. Mitchell

New England Journal of Public Policy

Economic advancement for women may be inextricably linked to the state of their health and access to health care. This article warns that the debates and public policy dilemmas over health care delivery systems, their costs, who pays, and issues of coverage and utilization demands weigh greatly on women and their families. The author suggests that women especially must be careful consumers of health care plans and outlines some qualities they should seek in choosing such plans.

Alcoholism: A Barrier To Empowerment For Women, Marion Brink Mar 1990

Alcoholism: A Barrier To Empowerment For Women, Marion Brink

New England Journal of Public Policy

Women's increasing economic power has encouraged the promotion of their drinking as fashionable. However, women are more vulnerable to the impact of alcohol, and the stigma attached to alcoholism is greater for them than it is for men. As a consequence, a woman — and those around her — will deny her alcoholism until she has lost much more than her male counterparts. When, or if, she seeks help for this devastating disease, she finds a lack of woman-specific programs and facilities. This article notes the barriers to recovery for women and offers some suggestions for breaking them down. Two …

The Relationship Between Spirituality And Depression In Family Caregivers Of The Elderly, Cynthia L. Boland Jan 1990

The Relationship Between Spirituality And Depression In Family Caregivers Of The Elderly, Cynthia L. Boland

Masters Theses

The main purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between spirituality and depression in family caregivers of the elderly. Data for this secondary study came from a caregiver research project conducted by Given and Given (1989). Although the primary study was longitudinal, this study used a cross-sectional, descriptive correlational design. A convenience sample of 191 family caregivers participated. Data on spirituality and depression were obtained by self-administered questionnaires. Spirituality was measured with the Spiritual/Philosophical subscale from the Coping Resources Inventory (Hammer & Marting, 1988). The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (Radloff, 1977) was slightly modified and used …

Human Fetal Tissue: Scientific Uses And Ethical Concerns, Carol A. Tauer Ph.D. Jan 1990

Human Fetal Tissue: Scientific Uses And Ethical Concerns, Carol A. Tauer Ph.D.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Human fetal tissue has been used in research for decades, but recent attempts to implant fetal neural tissue as therapy for Parkinson's disease have stimulated discussion of ethical and policy issues. In late 1989 a moratorium on federal support of fetal tissue transplantation research was indefinitely extended, based on the connection between this research and elective abortion. Four abortion-related objections to the use of fetal tissue can be identified: 1. The procedures of abortion and tissue procurement are linked in practice; 2. One who uses fetal tissue is complicit with the abortions which provided the tissue; 3. The prospect of …
