According to one source, nearly one out of every ten prints published by Currier and Ives had the trotting horse as its subject. The so-called "Golden Age of Trotting" in America, from 1840 to 1895, corresponded with the time that the prints of Currier and Ives were most popular. This article provides a brief description of some Currier and Ives trotters with a connection to Maine, including Mac, Tacony and Zachary Taylor, Pelham, Daniel D. Tompkins and Blanc Negre, Trustee, Stella, Flora Temple, Hopeful, Lady Maud, Camors, Smuggler, Emma B, Jay-Eye-See, Pallas, Kremlin, and Nelson.

Recluse Farm, the home of James and Jane Edgecomb, was located in South Hiram off the New Settlement Road about four miles from the village of Cornish, Maine. In June of 1883, veterinarian George H. Bailey visited the farm, known for breeding trotting horses, and published an article in the Maine Farmer. This article provides highlights and commentary related to Bailey's account.

While many may be familiar with the Veterans Affairs (VA) Center at Togus near Augusta, Maine, few are aware that it was once the home of a small but significant breeding farm for trotting horses. The facility started serving Civil War veterans in 1866, then called the National Asylum for Disabled Soldiers.

The property was originally owned by Horace Beal of Rockland, and when Beal learned that mineral springs were located on the property, he seized upon a plan to build a Saratoga like spa. Beal invested heavily in the property, building a large hotel, bathing house, racetrack and stables. …

This article traces the history of a horse, known as Gen. Knox, that became a foundation sire of several other Maine trotting horses. The horse was brought to Maine in 1859 at the age of three by Thomas S. Lang of North Vassalboro. Gen. Knox was included in the 1874 edition of Noted Maine Horses. In a letter summarizing the 1874 trotting season written to The Maine Farmer, George H. Bailey noted that Maine had 40 organized tracks in operation. Horses of the caliber of Gen. On September 7, 1876, the Lewiston Evening Journal reported that Colonel Henry S. Russell of Milton, Massachusetts, was bringing the race horse known as Smuggler to Maine, being "desirous of showing his famous stallion to the people and breeders of Maine." The horse arrived in Bangor, Maine, on Tuesday, September 19 and competed in events the following Saturday and Monday.

In the early 1800s Maine was known for producing excellent trotting horses. These horses helped to establish a unique American breed of horse that became known as "Standardbred". In 1842 a colt was foaled in Exeter, Maine, that would become a foundation sire of trotting horses in Maine and beyond. The horse, owned by Hiram Drew, was known as "the Drew horse" or "Old Drew."
