Greek And Roman Child Life As Represented In Some Greek And Latin Authors, Anne Louise Sanford

Master's Theses

In the following study I have attempted to present a picture of Greek and Roman child life as it is represented in some Greek and Latin authors. Most of my material has been derived from well known authors such as Homer, Plato, Quintilian, etc. But there has been an attempt to enlarge my scope by consulting some other Greek and Latin authors easily available in the University of Richmond Library, the Richmond Public Library and the Virginia state Library. In my general discussion I have drawn freely on available works which would be helpful for elucidation and comparison.

The Effect Of European Festivals On American Entertainment, Florence Veall Jan 1938

The Effect Of European Festivals On American Entertainment, Florence Veall

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The selection of the subject "The effect of European Festivals on American Entertainment" was prompted by an assignment in a College of the Pacific Summer School course, "Supervision in the Elementary School."

The project was the planning of a patrictic program in an immigrant community. Each nationality represented in the class was to provide a national impression of the homeland of his ancestors, by means of costume, song, and dance typical of the country. After an hour of very interesting entertainment which gave an introduction to the background of the foreign members of the class, all lustily sang "America," led …

Prohibition In Kansas From 1861-1881, Edna Pearl Elliott Jan 1938

Prohibition In Kansas From 1861-1881, Edna Pearl Elliott

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

During the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804, the liquor problem first entered Kansas, when two men were punished for drunkenness while on duty. From 1804 to 1848 little is to be found in records that gives any information on this question but from 1848 to 1861 it was a live issue. Laws were enacted prohibiting the sale of intoxicating beverages to the Indians, the Dram-shop Law of 1855 was passed, the Wyandotte Constitutional Convention was held, and Kansas was admitted as a state January 29, 1861, without a liquor control law in her Constitution. The demand for better liquor …

Economic And Social Implications Of The Southern Literary Messenger 1834-1864, James E. King Jan 1938

Economic And Social Implications Of The Southern Literary Messenger 1834-1864, James E. King

Honors Theses

From 1774 to 1824 Virginia played the most conspicuous role in creating and directing a union of democratic states. In 1861 there is the anomaly of the Old Dominion occupying the stellar position in an attempt to disrupt the confederation which was her hands-work. No amount of explanation as to economic interests, slavery, abolitionism or frustration seems in the last analysis, adequate in understanding this great transition. When reasonable arguments are exhausted and there is yet no central solution to the problem, there remains only the catholic element of change as a conclusion.

Reconstruction In Richmond City Government, Philip Turner King Jan 1938

Reconstruction In Richmond City Government, Philip Turner King

Honors Theses

By 1870 the "corner" had been rounded. The end of reconstruction was in full view and was momentarily expected. Still, the hope for the reestablishment of Virginia's former status was based entirely upon rumor. It was a period when people held their breaths. Readmission was being fought bitterly in the congress. To Sumner the election in Virginia had been just one big fraud and the state was still "smoking with rebellion.

General John J. Pershing And America's Part In The World War In Episode Of Efficient Effort For A Mistaken Cause, Marvin Bell

Bachelors’ Theses

General John J. Pershing was chosen to command the American Expeditionary Force in Europe by President Wilson, an honor gained not only by his record of achievement, but also for his extreme loyalty to Government authority under hampering circumstances. Pershing was known as one of the coolest men under fire and possessed a character which compelled men not only to die, but to work, grumbling perhaps but respecting him.

Although the far to end war ended November 11, 1918, the world has never been free of war since. War ravaged Ireland and Russia for years after the World War. Revolutions …

The Magnitude Of The Fast Offerings Paid In The Stakes Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1916-1936, H. Lester Petersen

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this thesis may be stated in four questions: (1) To what extent are "Fast Offerings" paid by the membership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? (2) What changes, if any, have occurred in the amounts of these fast offerings paid over the years 1916 to 1936, inclusive? (3) What differences and similarities appear to exist in the amounts of fast offerings paid in the several stakes of the Church? (4) How do the rates of change in the amounts of fast offerings paid during these years compare with the rates of change in the …

Efforts Of The Continental Congress To Promote Manufactures And Domestic Arts In The Colonies, Floyd Neal Penick Aug 1937

Efforts Of The Continental Congress To Promote Manufactures And Domestic Arts In The Colonies, Floyd Neal Penick

Masters Theses

While efforts were made to promote manufactures in the colonies long before the Revolutionary War began, this struggle forced the Continental Congress to exert more strenuous efforts for the encouragement of the production of certain necessary commodities than had formerly been made. These endeavors, however, were largely incidental to the greater work of successfully prosecuting a war. It is probably true that more emphasis would have been placed upon the domestic manufactures at this time had the Revolution not occurred. The non-importation agreements, passed because of the Intolerable Acts and similar measures, made such a result almost inevitable.

Tennessee's Policy In The Removal Of The Cherokee, Minnie Hazel Myers Aug 1937

Tennessee's Policy In The Removal Of The Cherokee, Minnie Hazel Myers

Masters Theses

PREFACE: Indian removal was one of the most vital problems in the early history of the State of Tennessee. When this state came into the Union she had title to only two widely separated triangles of land, one in northern Middle Tennessee, the other in East Tennessee. The Indians held title to all other lands within her limits, and these lands practically surrounded the white settlements. Squatters who settled upon Indian soil and holders ot North Carolina land warrants petitioned the Federal Government to purchase Indian land; public officials pleaded for the purchase of Indian land to aid in the …

The Pueblo Indian Land Grants Of The "Rio Abajo," New Mexico, Herbert O. Brayer Jun 1937

The Pueblo Indian Land Grants Of The "Rio Abajo," New Mexico, Herbert O. Brayer

History ETDs

The Supreme Court of the United States, in deciding a case of extreme importance to the Pueblo Indians, was forced to admit that erroneous information with regard to the Indians had been given to the court in a previous case, leading to a decision which proved highly costly, in money and land, to the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico. This study is made, therefore, in an attempt to supply, at least partially, the need so often expressed by attorneys, judges, state and federal authorities.

History Of Mormon Settlements In Mexico And New Mexico, H. Mannie Foster

History ETDs

Although much has been written regarding the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter Day Saints, especially well done in such information relative to their doctrines. Less investigation has been attempted concerning their social, economic, and colonial expansion. Aside from the works on Utah and Arizona nothing in the way of a systematic investigation has been made into their colonial expansion in Mexico and New Mexico.

Life Of Claude A. Swanson, J. Roland Nuckols May 1937

Life Of Claude A. Swanson, J. Roland Nuckols

Honors Theses

Claude Augustus Swanson was born at Swansonville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia on March 31, 1862. He is the son of John Muse Swanson and Catherine Pritchett. His father who was a merchant and tobacco manufacturer lost all his property in the panic of 1876. This caused Claude to have to stop his education at the age of fourteen and go to work on the farm. He worked here for two years, and did all of the manual labor incident to farm life. To many boys this would be very discouraging and would cause them to give up, but not so with …

The Two Ports Of Colonial Williamsburg, Books P. Shetter May 1937

The Two Ports Of Colonial Williamsburg, Books P. Shetter

Honors Theses

The paper is an attempt to cast light upon two Ports that were of vital importance in the colonial period of Williamsburg, and since have degenerated to mere creeks that lie close this vicinity. in writing this paper, I have tried to knit together, as closely as possible, information on these Ports from the establishing of the Ports in 1698 to around 1818 when the last attempt at progress concerning them was made. The information was not plentiful and did not run in uniformity. Therefore, in this paper one will find gaps and some problems incomplete.

To Swem's index, The …

Victoria: The Story Of A Western Kansas Town, Marjorie Gamet Raish May 1937

Victoria: The Story Of A Western Kansas Town, Marjorie Gamet Raish

Master's Theses

This thesis is a history of the English colony at Victoria, Kansas, from the purchase of the land from the Kansas Pacific Railroad by Georg E. Grant in 1872 until the end of the colony in the early eighties. It does not attempt to deal in any complete form with history of the German- Russians who settled at Herzog, a mile north of the original town of Victoria in 1876. The history of Herzog is a story in itself, an intensely interesting one, but too long to be more than suggested in this thesis. It is given only for the …

Lynching, Frieda Cohen May 1937

Lynching, Frieda Cohen

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis discusses the problem of lynching in the United States from historical, legal, psychological, and sociological aspects.

The first endeavor has been to obtain all the facts possible and my final endeavor has been to point out the conclusions clearly warranted by such facts.

The material for this study was found 1n a wide range of sources, the most important of which were Raper's The Tragedy of Lynching, Chadburn's Lynching and the Law, Cutler's Lynch Law and the material by the Southern Commission on Interracial Cooperation and the Southern Commission on the Study of Lynching.

The Life Of Samuel Mathews, Edward Jefferson Clary Apr 1937

The Life Of Samuel Mathews, Edward Jefferson Clary

Master's Theses

My purpose in writ1ng this paper came from the realization that the activities or many prominent men in the Colony during the early period of Virginia's history have been neglected by all historians. Realizing this fact, I am writing this paper with the purpose of better understanding and appreciating more the work which these men did. Samuel Mathews was the most prominent of these men and by looking at his life and activities, we can fully realize and appreciate the work which these men did. By looking at the life of Mathews, we can understand this whole period of Virginia …

Development Of Charleston And The Great Kanawha Valley, Cecil Anderson

Honors Theses

The development of the Valley of the Great Kanawha River has been rapid and has not as yet reached its peake in growth. The Valley has been richly endowed with abundance of raw material and the facilities for the changing or these materials into useful commodities. Along with the growth of the industry comes civic growth and it is these growth that I wish to present in this monograph.
