The Athletics Of The Ancient Greeks, William G. Blommer May 1933

The Athletics Of The Ancient Greeks, William G. Blommer

Bachelors’ Theses

In writing this thesis my object has been to obtain an intimate, view of the ancient Greek athlete. I have attempted to picture him as Homer depicted him in the Iliad and as he lived from the eighth to the fourth century B.C. I also tried to engender a real appreciation of the physical perfection that he attained by describing the events in which he actually competed.

Catherine De Medici Her Influence On France, Catherine Mary Croke Apr 1933

Catherine De Medici Her Influence On France, Catherine Mary Croke

Bachelors’ Theses

In writing this thesis my aim will be to state the true facts as far as that lies within my ability. To accomplish this I will have to surmount obstacles of no small dimensions. In order to understand the difficulties which surround my efforts in this direction, we have only to recall how difficult it is to arrive at the knowledge of true and real facts in matters of everyday occurrences. To impress this later statement on our minds I make reference to the late United States Presidential election, it was by no means easy to become acquainted with the …

The Intellectual And Social Achievements During The Age Of Louis Xiv, William M. Bell

Bachelors’ Theses

History is primarily a cultural study of events, characters and movements that have taken place during the ages. The purpose of this study, however, is not to memorize dates of particular events or characters but to view it with a study from a philosophical view point. Various ages are outstanding in European history in which man has been politically, socially, and intellectually benefited, therefore we make special mention of the Seventeenth Century in which the Age of Louis XlV is characteristic. Due to the policies of Devine Right advocated by Mazarin and Richelieu, Louis XlV was able to rule as …

An Analysis Of The Social Philosophies Of Brigham Young And John Calvin: With Special Reference To Their Similarities As They Were Expressed Through The Utah And Geneva Theocracies, Wesley P. Lloyd

Theses and Dissertations

Brigham Young was an American product of the nineteenth century. John Calvin was a European product of the sixteenth century. Each of these men left definite impressions upon world history. Of the two, Calvin is more widely understood and better known, but we should remember that the element of time was in his favor.

An examination of the lives of these two men indicates definite parallels, and their teachings show many views in common. Both were spiritual as well as temporal leaders, and each succeeded in gaining the interest of the world in his particular time. Just as the attention …

A Short History Of The Labors And Accomplishments Of The Protestant Missionaries In Hawaii, Margaret Adsit Jan 1933

A Short History Of The Labors And Accomplishments Of The Protestant Missionaries In Hawaii, Margaret Adsit

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

One of the first important efforts at foreign missionary work by American churches was the conversion of the Hawaiian Islands, or Sandwich islands as they were commonly called in the early days of their discovery, the first missionaries to the islands had heard reports from traders and whalers and accounts from native youths as to conditions in the islands, and from these facts they had imagined what would await them upon their arrival. When they arrived at the islands, they found great changes had taken place, such great changes that to the missionaries they could only be explained as "miraculous" …

Missionary Activities Among The Cherokee Indians, 1757-1838, William Ward Crouch Aug 1932

Missionary Activities Among The Cherokee Indians, 1757-1838, William Ward Crouch

Masters Theses

Introduction: Any historical account of early Indian missions must of necessity find its background in the prevailing political and religious conditions in Europe at the time of the discovery, the exploratlon, and the colonization of the American continent. At the end of the fifteenth century the Commercial Revolution broke upon Europe, and the discovery of America came as a direct result of this revolution. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the Catholic nations of southern and southwestern Europe were exploring and colonizing parts of both North and South America, excepting the Atlantic coast of North America from Florida to the …

The Confederate Government And The Unionists Of East Tennessee, Beatrice L. Garrett Aug 1932

The Confederate Government And The Unionists Of East Tennessee, Beatrice L. Garrett

Masters Theses

Preface: The events with which this thesis deals left behind them a heritage of hatred, bitterness, and prejudice. In the years immediately following the Civil War, those persons who were by birth or by nature "Northern" in sentiment stubbornly believed that the Confederate government overstepped the bounds of civilized warfare - that it was unnecessarily and maliciously cruel to the Unionists of East Tennessee. On the other hand, those of "Southern" sentiment despised the East Tennessee Unionists as traitors to their state and friends - as persons wholly untrustworthy and treacherous.

I have not sought to either condemn or justify …

The Longbow In English History, Rosalind M. Taylor Jun 1932

The Longbow In English History, Rosalind M. Taylor

Graduate Thesis Collection

The possession of a longbow around which cling the mysteries and the triumphs of its English predecessors presages an interest in its history and possibilities, so it is not strange when in the course of my studies at Butler University I was called upon to select a thesis subject that I found inspiration in my own bow. There is music in the twang of its bow-string; there is poetry in its lines. Every bow has its own personality; every arrow its own peculiar perversities.
