Social Justice: Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
A group photograph of students assembled on the steps of Fogler Library, University of Maine, for the 2015 "SlutWalk," calling for an end of victim blaming and 'slut shaming' targets of sexual assault, particularly in regard to the appearance of women rape victims. Signs held by some participants read: "Stop Slut Shaming. End Rape Culture;" "Don't tell us how to dress. Tell men not to rape;" "Shame and Blame belong only to the Rapist;" "Rape is a crime of violence, power, and control. No One Deserves It;" and "Consent in the sheets. Dissent in the streets."

2014 Journalism Graduate Skills For The Professional Workplace: Expectations From Journalism Professionals And Educators, Bernard R. Mccoy
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications
With 2015 graduations approaching, accuracy, ethical principles, and good news judgment were identified as top skills college journalism graduates should possess for the professional workplace, according to a national survey of journalism educators and professionals. There are sharp differences, though, between respondent groups over how well college journalism programs are doing preparing journalism graduates for journalism careers, as well as the perceived importance of social media, mobile, and digital reporting skills. The survey asked journalism professionals and educators to rank skills and experiences journalism graduates need for the professional workplace. Respondents included 665 professional journalism managers, non-managers, and educators. Respondents …

Darlings In Love: A History Of Romance Between Women At Hollins In The Early 20th Century, Antonia Nagle
Hollins Student Conference (2012-2016)
This paper and accompanying sources hope to provide a detailed examination of the world of darlings at Hollins between the years 1900 and 1921, using primary sources gathered from The Spinster, the college’s yearbook. As a small, single-sex institution established in 1842, Hollins has a history of romantic relationships between students. Students who participated in these relationships between the years of 1900 and 1921 were called “darlings.” These same-sex relationships flourished at Hollins in the early 20th century and were a well-known and accepted part of life at Hollins. For this study, over a hundred primary sources were gathered …

The Center for Research on Sustainable Forests (CRSF) had a very productive year during 2013-14. We were thrilled to have CRSF join five other research units on campus to be selected as a new UMaine Signature Research area supporting Sustainable Forests & Forest-Based Economy. This designation will provide a new level of recognition, support, and cooperation for researchers serving the needs of forest landowners and the forest products industry of the state.
As always, our success is driven by our people. Dr. Brian Roth along with a number of scientists and over 35 member organizations through the Cooperative Forestry Research …

The ANALA Collaborative is the newly-formed umbrella for the four UMass Boston racial and ethnic institutes. This year, with help from a team from the College of Management’s Emerging Leaders Program, we have come together to form ANALA in recognition of the area’s increasing racial and ethnic diversity and the need for majority-minority communities to work together toward common goals. While each of the four institutes will retain its separate identity and programs, we will also place greater emphasis on collaborative efforts in the service of our common mission and vision.

Is Service-Learning The Answer? Preparing Teacher Candidates To Work With Ells Through Service-Learning Experiences, Sandra Rodriguez-Arroyo
Is Service-Learning The Answer? Preparing Teacher Candidates To Work With Ells Through Service-Learning Experiences, Sandra Rodriguez-Arroyo
Scholarship of Metropolitan Mission
In an effort to address the gaps in preparing teacher candidates (TCs) to work with English Language Learners (ELLs), service-learning experiences (SLE) were integrated into two courses within a teacher education program. This exploratory case study sought to explore the outcomes of teacher candidates (TCs) engaged in SLE with diverse students and families, particularly ELLs. Content analysis of students’ reflections provided insights of the impact of the SLE. Findings indicate that participating in service-learning with ELLs provides opportunities for TCs to engage in positive interactions that help to address misconceptions about students, families, and communities. TCs also began to confront …

The Paris Collection: Reflections On An Interdisciplinary Performance Project, Jennifer Hamilton, Barry Sheehan
Stream 1: Enterprise and Engagement
Between September 2013 and January 2014, students and staff of the Technological University Dublin Conservatory of Music and Drama and DIT Dublin School of Creative Arts collaborated on the creation of an opera production which was presented at the National Concert Hall on Jan 23rd. The project was implemented within the modular framework from both colleges. The collaboration was both multi and inter-disciplinary and the students engaged at a professional level, working under staff supervision and in tandem with personnel and resources outside the college environment. The performers were required to audition for their roles and the teams of design …
