John And Mark: The Bi-Optic Gospels, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2001

John And Mark: The Bi-Optic Gospels, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

"The relationship between the Fourth Gospel (FG) and the Synoptics is often treated as "three against one," evoking distorted perceptions ofJohn and the Synoptics alike. Differences between the presentations and contents of these four books contribute to the flawed assumption that the Synoptics are "historical" while John is "spiritual." However, if Matthew and Luke indeed used Mark in constructing their gospels, differences in perspective between the Synoptics and FG may be rooted primarily in differences between the Markan andJohannine traditions. There may even have been contacts between these two traditions, and perhaps some of their similarities and differences originated within …

The Evolving Face Of God As Creator: Early Ninteenth-Century Traditionalist And Accommodationist Theological Responses In British Religious Thought To Paleonatural Evil In The Fossil Record, Thane Hutcherson Ury

Dissertations

The Topic

From the early Reformation through the early 1800s, Gen 1-11 was consensually understood as providing a perspicacious, historical account of how God brought the world into being. Tenets of belief included six literal 24-hour days of creation and a catastrophic global Flood, and most often the conviction that Gen 1:31 implies that no evil of any type existed prior to the Fall. New geological interpretations in the early nineteenth century, however, pointed toward an earth history that seemed anything but very good, instead suggesting a harsh concatenation of deep-time prelapsarian pain, struggle, destruction of the weak, predation, diseases, …

Creation In Isaiah, Wann M. Fanwar Jan 2001

Creation In Isaiah, Wann M. Fanwar

Dissertations

This study investigates the role of creation thought in Isaiah in order to determine its relationship to Isaiah's concept of God as creator, especially as it pertains to his salvific work for and through Israel. This investigation is carried out in three steps. First, Isaiah's use of creation language, which involves specific explicit creation terms and implicit references (metaphors), is investigated. Second, selected creation texts, namely, 4:2-6; 43:1-7; 44:24-45:25; and 65:17-25, are exegeted. Third, Isaiah's creation thought is studied in relationship to other significant concepts in the book, such as salvation theology and redemption history, and God's salvific intention for …

The Banquet Type-Scene In The Parables Of Jesus, Fazadudin Hosein Jan 2001

The Banquet Type-Scene In The Parables Of Jesus, Fazadudin Hosein

Dissertations

Biblical narratives abound in ancient literary and oral conventions. One such convention is the type-scene. The study of the type-scene originated in 1933 with Walter Arend who studied compositional recurrent patterns and variations in the epics of Homer. Later, the study was developed by Robert Alter inhis treatment of biblical narratives. The type-scene was a narratorial device used by ancient orators and writers in which traditional elements of repetitive compositional patterns were told and retold ininnovative ways to an audience, raising their expectation and sometimes causing surprise. Conventional elements that make up the type-scene were catchwords, motifs, characters, and themes. …

The Classification Of The Greek Manuscripts Of 1 Peter With Special Emphasis On Methodology, Kenneth Keumsang Yoo Jan 2001

The Classification Of The Greek Manuscripts Of 1 Peter With Special Emphasis On Methodology, Kenneth Keumsang Yoo

Dissertations

The problem. Either because of methodological flaws or because of inadequate databases, Greek manuscripts of 1 Peter have not been satisfactorily examined. This study is an attempt to establish a better textual critical method and to apply it to a larger database. The method identifies new statistical techniques that facilitate quantitative analysis, necessary to establish the tentative groups that are used for the profiling of manuscripts.

The method. The method I used for the classification of Greek manuscripts of 1 Peter combines the computer-generated profile method and a statistical technique known as factor analysis. The profile method has …

The Fatherhood Of God: An Exegetical Study From The Hebrew Scriptures, David Russell Tasker Jan 2001

The Fatherhood Of God: An Exegetical Study From The Hebrew Scriptures, David Russell Tasker

Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to develop a theology of the fatherhood of God from the Hebrew Scriptures. Although many studies have explored the topic from the perspective of other disciplines, the actual theology of God's fatherhood, as revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures, has been neglected until now. This has resulted in the dichotomization between the concept of God as presented in the so-called Old and New Testaments.

Because of the tendency to explain God through the lenses of Greek and Roman mythology, chapter 1 surveys ANE thought, showing that the fatherhood of god concept goes back a lot …

Believing In The Atoning Power Of Christ, Kerry M. Muhlestein Jan 2001

Believing In The Atoning Power Of Christ, Kerry M. Muhlestein

Faculty Publications

The book of Deuteronomy begins with a striking verse: "(There are eleven days journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea)" (Deuteronomy 1:2). Because this verse is set within parentheses and seems to relay minutia, it is easily passed over. But a close examination shows it to be one of the most thought-provoking verses in the Old Testament. Identifying two of the sites referred to in the verse makes this clear. Horeb is another name for Mount Sinai. Kadesh-barnea is the place where Moses and the children of Israel camped as they sent men into the promised …

Situating 2 Timothy In Early Christian History, Mona Joy Lafosse Jan 2001

Situating 2 Timothy In Early Christian History, Mona Joy Lafosse

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The New Testament letter of 2 Timothy has generally been studied in the context of two other letters, 1 Timothy and Titus. These three letters, known as the Pastoral Epistles, each purports to be written by Paul. Though some scholars defend this notion, the majority of critical scholars argue they were not written by Paul, but by someone in the early second century. For these scholars, a later date better explains several aspects of these letters that make Pauline authorship difficult to explain. One crucial aspect is that the language, particularly the vocabulary and style of the Pastoral Epistles, is …

The Isaiah Passages In The Book Of Mormon: A Non-Aligned Text, Carol F. Ellertson Jan 2001

The Isaiah Passages In The Book Of Mormon: A Non-Aligned Text, Carol F. Ellertson

Theses and Dissertations

Since the advent of the Dead Sea Scrolls, four biblical textual scholars have emerged at the forefront of the dialogue concerning textual evolution. They are: Frank Moore Cross, Emanuel Tov, Shemaryahu Talmon and Eugene Ulrich. Though there is some overlap in their hypotheses, each scholar has put forth a framework of biblical textual development in light of these new discoveries.

If a new biblical text were discovered today, how would each scholar approach it? This thesis evaluates each scholars' views and concludes that Emanuel Tov's criteria for judging a newly discovered text is the most thorough and explanatory. Tov's views …

Is Tolerance Enough? One Christian's Perspective, Mario Daniel Sassi Jan 2001

Is Tolerance Enough? One Christian's Perspective, Mario Daniel Sassi

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Tolerance is an ever-evolving discussion growing in complexity and importance. This paper will approach the topic from a personal perspective and a Christian bias. We begin with tolerance as seen in retrospect through the eyes of a boy growing up in a town where people of many different cultures lived and worked together. Many things came out of that experience including rudimentary working definition of tolerance and how it affected life in that small town. Tolerance is made up of certain characteristics and these either add or detract from the quality of life, it can make life more bearable in …

Baruch Secundum Decanum Salesberiensem: Text And Introduction To The Earliest Latincommentary On Baruch, Andrew T. Sulavik Th.D, Mlis Dec 2000

Baruch Secundum Decanum Salesberiensem: Text And Introduction To The Earliest Latincommentary On Baruch, Andrew T. Sulavik Th.D, Mlis

Andrew T. Sulavik

The Glossa super Baruch, composed in Paris during the late twelfth or early thirteenth century, remains the earliest known Latin commentary on the Book of Baruch, and served as the foundational text for Hugh of St. Cher’s Postilla super Baruch. It is attributed to a certain ‘Dean of Salisbury’, who was most likely a Master trained in the moral biblical school of Stephen Langton, and could be either Richard Poore or Thomas Chobham.
