La historia registra la existencia de ciudades y la concentración poblacional en los Andes desde las culturas precolombinas. Se desarrollaron centros de gobierno fundamentalmente al interior del continente (a excepción del norte peruano en donde se estableció Chan Chan capital Chimu), pues las escasas vinculaciones culturales y comerciales entre mesoamérica y sudamérica no justificaron el traslado o desarrollo de ciudades en la costa.
Algunas ciudades andinas como Cusca -capital incaica-, Quito, Tomebamba, Cajamarca y Pachacamac constituyeron centros regionales, que desempeñaron funciones de soporte para la organización política y el sistema productivo a una escala amplia, gracias a los caminos y …
