A.R. Futuristic Scenario In Seun, Yookyung Lee

Masters Theses

Due to social distancing policies during the coronavirus pandemic, people have increasingly turned to digital platforms to fulfill what they previously enjoyed in face-to-face interactions. The high demand for virtual world services, called “metaverses,” has sparked discussions about the possibility of completely replacing the real world, which has raised questions about the role of architects in dealing with physical spaces. However, it is widely believed that digital elements will merge into the real world instead of completely replacing it, which makes augmented reality (AR) a key technology to study in the context of architecture.

In “Learning from Las Vegas,” Robert …

Role Of 3d Printed Green Walls In Healing Architecture, Sara Chahin, Ayman Afify, Hiba Mohsen, Maged Youssef Oct 2022

Role Of 3d Printed Green Walls In Healing Architecture, Sara Chahin, Ayman Afify, Hiba Mohsen, Maged Youssef

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has become a fundamental issue in modern global technology, touching practically every element of modern human life.Three-dimensional (3D) printing (also known as additive manufacturing) is an advanced manufacturing technology that can autonomously manufacture complicated shape geometries from a 3D computer-aided design model without the use of equipment or fixtures. However, there is a friction between traditional designs and the rise of 3D printed technology when it comes to architectural healing approaches, and this adaptability is hurting human healing tactics that are dependent on the relationship between space and environment.Due to its capacity to create products in a wide …

The Evolution Of The Function And Design Of Spaces In Academic Libraries Through The Digital Era, Kareem S. Galal Sep 2020

The Evolution Of The Function And Design Of Spaces In Academic Libraries Through The Digital Era, Kareem S. Galal

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

Along with technology development in all fields of contemporary life, activities come development regarding architectural requirements. The functions, spaces usage, types of buildings, etc. have changed. Certain architectural elements and spaces have disappeared while other functions have either disappeared or been minimized. The change has also exceeded the architectural level to the urban level, affecting the urban planning elements, sizes, and decision-making processes.

Developments in technology exert a great influence on communication as well as data entry, saving, and archiving; which, in return, has had a direct impact on libraries’ spaces, operating systems, functions, and user types. As a result, …

Aftermarket Supermarket | A Speculative Retrospective, Alexander Kim Dec 2016

Aftermarket Supermarket | A Speculative Retrospective, Alexander Kim

Architecture Senior Theses

In the preface to Delusive Spaces: Essays on Culture, Media and Technology, media theorist Eric Kluitenberg writes that “the delusion of the new”1 pollutes our theorizations of new media. This sort of technocratic fetishization of emergent technologies can only amount to a surfatial investigation of its effects or capabilities. Architectural investigations of virtual reality and other new media systems suffer from this tendency as well. Content-based experimentation and criticism obsess over the simultaneously exciting and daunting prospects of what we can now do or make with recent digital developments. There’s definite value in such endeavors, but frankly, in the grand …

Library As Learning Object: When It Is All About The Building! [Poster], Debbie Morrow May 2016

Library As Learning Object: When It Is All About The Building! [Poster], Debbie Morrow

Debbie Morrow

Have you ever been a "victim of your own success"? We have faculty who want to bring classes to the library, not to learn about information-finding, but to see and touch the technology that is part of the building itself! Hear about how developing a session featuring GVSU's new library building as a "learning object" has become a great opportunity for creating an engaging learning experience for first year students.

The Immersive Media Library @ Vcu, Michael Rosenthal-Mix Jan 2015

The Immersive Media Library @ Vcu, Michael Rosenthal-Mix

Theses and Dissertations

Answering the call issued by John Underkoffler in 2010 about the future of UI, I have imagined the Immersive Media Library (IML) as an annex of the main VCU library, offering a concentration of visually immersive spaces to compliment the space the university is already building in the renovated Cabell Library. The design is new in that the emphasis is placed on the collaboration between librarians and visitors in creating new work. Focusing on the interpersonal might be unexpected from program with such an emphasis on new technology - but I see it as vital part of the new computing …

The Classroom Paradigm: Design In A Technology-Driven Era, Candace Thompson Dec 2013

The Classroom Paradigm: Design In A Technology-Driven Era, Candace Thompson

Interior Design Program: Theses and Other Student Work

Classroom design has an effect on a number of students’ behaviors and performance. Architects and facilities directors are frequently faced with design decisions that impact students and do not always have the resources to help support their decision making. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how classroom design in education can facilitate students’ learning and engagement in an ever-changing technological age. Is the traditional classroom environment the most effective set up? To explore this issue, the author will provide literature review and design examples to help guide the reader through ways to accommodate these changing needs—both the physical …

A Choreographed Experience: The Role Of Technology In Restaurant Design, Clarissa J. Volker Dec 2011

A Choreographed Experience: The Role Of Technology In Restaurant Design, Clarissa J. Volker

Interior Design Program: Theses and Other Student Work

The 21st century dining experience has emerged with a focus on the engagement of the consumer. This project challenges and defines the role of technology within restaurant design bound by emerging concepts of interactive architecture. Through precedent research and the exploration of programatic space, a final schematic design visualizes an interactive hub to engage the everyday customer.

Situated Architecture In The Digital Age: Adaptation Of A Textile Mill In Holyoke, Massachusetts, Dorcas A. Brooks Jan 2011

Situated Architecture In The Digital Age: Adaptation Of A Textile Mill In Holyoke, Massachusetts, Dorcas A. Brooks

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

The City of Holyoke, Massachusetts is one of many aging, industrial cities striving to revitalize its economy based on the promise of increased digital connectivity and clean energy resources. But how do you renovate 19th century mills to meet the demands of the information age? This architectural study explores the potential impact of sensing technologies and information networks on the definition and function of buildings in the 21st century. It explores the changes that have taken place in industrial architecture since 1850 and argues for an architecture that supports local relationships and environmental awareness. The author explores the industrial history …
