Teaching Concrete Masonry Unit Construction, Andreas Luescher
Teaching Concrete Masonry Unit Construction, Andreas Luescher
Andreas Luescher
The Architectural Materials and Systems course at the Bowling Green State University in Ohio pursues the integration of a design/build exercise, which focuses on the creative opportunities that come with the application of concrete masonry units. The exercise with CMU’s causes interesting interplay interaction, interpretation, and integration, providing students the opportunity to break away from compartmentalization and offering a unique forum for testing pedagogies about making. Students are encouraged and expected to exploit the endless possibilities of expression through spontaneous, coherent and innovative incorporation of CMU’s. Collaboration among students gives them a valuable occasion to realize a design in built …

"Sustaining Learning Places" explores the role of GIS in higher education facilities planning and campus management, with an emphasis on creating processes and tools that support campus sustainability and climate action goals.
Creative Inquiry Into Concrete Masonry Units, Andreas Luescher
Creative Inquiry Into Concrete Masonry Units, Andreas Luescher
Andreas Luescher
A fundamental principle of architecture is the interrelationship of materials and construction technique to the architectural imagination. As a result of interplay, interaction, interpretation, and integration, materials give us the opportunity to break away from compartmentalization in the process of structure formation. This shift acknowledges the fact that construction requires a way of thinking: that embodied experience is qualitatively different from abstraction and is a critical component in the evolution of ideas. First-hand knowledge of materials - not only what they look like, but their texture, their heft, their pliability and the ways in which they are joined together - …

How Much Information Disclosure Of Building Energy Performance Is Necessary?, David Hsu

Many different governments have begun to require disclosure of building energy performance, in order to allow owners and prospective buyers to incorporate this information into their investment decisions. These policies, known as disclosure or information policies, require owners to benchmark their buildings and sometimes conduct engineering audits. However, given substantial variation in the cost to disclose different types of information, it is natural to ask: how much and what kind of information about building energy performance should be disclosed, and for what purposes? To answer this question, this paper assembles and cleans a comprehensive panel dataset of New York City …

Climate Considerations For Facades, Ajla Aksamija
Ajla Aksamija
Facades are one of the most significant contributors to the energy budget and the comfort parameters of any building, and their designs and performance are essential factors for sustainable, energy-efficient, high-performance buildings. Basic methods for designing high-performance building facades include: orienting and developing geometry and massing of the building to respond to solar position, providing solar shading to control cooling loads and improve thermal comfort, using natural ventilation to reduce cooling loads and enhance air quality, minimizing energy used for artificial lighting and mechanical cooling and heating by optimizing exterior wall insulation and the use of daylighting. This article includes …
