Landscapes Are Cornerstones Of Sustainability Programs, Don Spence Apr 2022

Landscapes Are Cornerstones Of Sustainability Programs, Don Spence

Sustainability Conference

Typical American landscapes are not sustainable in an economic or biological framework. The essence of the idea of sustainable growth and development are centered on the idea that those activities are not degrading natural resources or that they are outstrip budgets. A significant piece of any sustainable management plan is tied to how we manage our landscapes, how we use plants; specifically, how much grass there is, and how many native plants there are. Sustainable landscapes should require less chemical and financial inputs, which in the end, saves money and increases the biological value of the land and creates a …

The PRODOC4018 project aimed to develop tools for the planning and management of the Carioca landscapes, a World Heritage Site since 2012. The proposal promotes a shared and integrated management of cultural heritage of excellence through preservation guidelines, with intervention criteria and protection and management tools incorporated in action plans and geo-referenced monitoring mechanisms. These analysed properties were located in the World Heritage area and its surroundings, 'Carioca Landscapes: between the mountain and the sea.

Landscape heritage must be evaluated, ordered and managed in its spatial and temporal context, but also in the social, environmental and economic context in which …

Sustainable Development And Regenerative Sustainability In The Legal Urban Framework Of The Republic Of North Macedonia – Challenge Or Utopia, Strahinja Trpevski, Zaklina Angelovska Oct 2020

Sustainable Development And Regenerative Sustainability In The Legal Urban Framework Of The Republic Of North Macedonia – Challenge Or Utopia, Strahinja Trpevski, Zaklina Angelovska

UBT International Conference

We abuse the land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see the land as a community to which we belong we may begin to use it with love and respect- is a deep thinking of Aldo Leopold. This promotes a regenerative shift in the sustainability concept, no longer only considering resources and energy, but also significant human-centric attributes and a space. This paper presents the context in which urban planners can contribute to raising the values of sustainability, attitudes and behavior in future regenerative societies, while critically analyzing 20 years of continuous profound change …

Encouraging The Eco-Mobility In Context Of Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning - Evaluating The Ecomobility Capacities Of Bozcaada Island In Context Of Sustainable Transportation, Shqiprim Ahmeti

UBT International Conference

Experiences show that urban mobility based on fossil fuels is not the way forward and cities that have prioritised private automobile mobility in their planning have turned out to be disadvantageous for people from a health, safety, and economic perspectives. It has been proven that building automobile friendly infrastructure will not solve the traffic challenges in cities. The development of sustainable urban transport systems requires a conceptual leap and paradigm shift. In this context, Eco-Mobility is a new application practice that covers all the policies and principles of sustainable transportation and as such, it is developed for the application of …

“Circular Economy” As An Imperative Indicator Of A Sustainable Urban Development Derived By Construction Industry – Case Study Pristina, Binak Beqaj, Blerta Vula Rizvanolli

UBT International Conference

Construction field is an important industry for improving resource productivity and with impact on urban development and GDP of the Country (actually in Kosova, as calculated on the level of 15.76%). The intention of the system promoted by the European Union as “Circular Economy” is to keep the added value of the products for as long as possible and virtually eliminate waste from urban spaces as a fundamental guide of urban sustainability. The process of turning waste into a resource of new modes seems to reshape the development of construction industries, especially now when the need for building materials is …

High Performance Mortar With 100% Recycled Aggregate Using Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles, Molly Schrager, Vito Francioso, Arjun Kadakia, Mirian Velay-Lizancos Aug 2018

High Performance Mortar With 100% Recycled Aggregate Using Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles, Molly Schrager, Vito Francioso, Arjun Kadakia, Mirian Velay-Lizancos

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium

Concrete and mortar are materials commonly used in construction. Their main compounds are cement, aggregates (sand and gravel) and water. In an effort to increase the sustainability of these materials, the idea of using recycled aggregates from ground old concrete and using it to make mortar and concrete has gained more interest. It has two advantages: it reduces the need to mine for raw materials and lessens the amount of old and defective concrete that is typically put in landfills. But, the use of recycled concrete aggregate lowers the strength of mortars and concretes because the residual compounds in the …

It's All About Living Sustainable: (A Research Of Communicating Sustainable Way Of Living To The Public), Gafur Asani, Dietrich Schwarz, Manuel Sebastian Du

UBT International Conference

Living sustainable, a vision that I developed at the Design Studio Schwarz, University of Liechtenstein. Living sustainable raises questions about living in balance with our natural resources. We are living on costs of next generations, so we are responsible to make the changes with architectural interventions in our society for our society. Based on „World Energy Council“ report of 2011, our planet will have 2.2 billion inhabitants more on 2050, reaching 9.2 billion, by challenging a huge demand on mobility, food, goods and building as well. In order to having a bigger impact and a better control over growing up-mentioned …

Concrete Of Our Millennium – Eco Friendly Concrete, Mevlan Qafleshi, Driton R. Kryeziu, Lulëzim Bytyçi, Fisnik Kadiu

UBT International Conference

Scientifically there are no more doubts about the impact of humans on global warming. The raise of earth temperature causes environmentally related problems. Evidences show the most influencing GHG is CO2. Many human activities release this GHG as a byproduct. Generally, the two industries contributing to this are the energy production and construction. The GWhrs of Kosovo energy, (in 2013, 5864 GWh) emit kilotons of CO2. The emission of CO2 in 2013 was 7896.0 kton, i.e. 1.3t/MWh. On the other side, the concrete industry, the second most used material, which uses cement contributes with other tons of GHG, almost each …

Sustainable Architecture And Quality Of Place, Arlinda Sheqiri Nov 2012

Sustainable Architecture And Quality Of Place, Arlinda Sheqiri

UBT International Conference

A major part of this challenge is the development for better city-better life and being able to create sustainable architecture solutions through more effective ways to implement in our everyday life process. Strategists, designers and planners are also concerned with combining means and time efficiently. We can see, for example, nearly half of the city in Prishtina has faced wild development or re-development. This has happened as a result of individual construction projects which were undertook without municipal building permits because the pressure to develop was much high than capability of local authority to provide this service. Nevertheless even after …
