Over one thousand acres of farmland, open space, and wetlands are converted to residential or commercial development each week in New England. In Massachusetts, nearly two acres of open space land is lost to development every hour. Current development trends suggest that this building pattern, referred to as sprawl, is likely to continue into the near future. Because the negative consequences of sprawl development are highly visible, residents of Massachusetts are becoming increasingly concerned about its impact on their communities. Residents see the unique character of their communities being transformed by uncontrolled residential and commercial development. Green fields and open …

Towards Establishing A Process For Preserving Historic Landscapes In Mexico: The Casa Cristo Gardens In Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Marcela De Obaldia
LSU Master's Theses
Landscape Architecture is a field that is in process of development in Mexico. However, although empirically, the landscape was considered in the past as part of the human's environment, and this is the Mexican heritage. Thus, this heritage is important to considered because is part of the people's identity, and therefore, vital to protect. However, Mexico focuses its attention to the preservation of its' national heritage in the fields of architecture and fine arts, leaving without protective regulations and guidelines the field of landscape architecture. The following thesis intends to create awareness in people of the importance of the landscape …

Architecture Thesis Prep
"The primary goal of this thesis is to investigate and test hoe an architectural intervention in a historical site will set a direction for future development of an urban fabric. The urban architectural intervention will be in a form of a modern building project, which shares a dialogue with the history and which will be based on the analysis of historical and contemporary precedents. Tha ability of the architectural intervention to express a regional and universal identity is the motivating concern. The following architectural issues will be addressed: Context, Process, Scale and Image."

Ferndale Sewer Project, Susie Van Kirk
Ferndale Sewer Project, Susie Van Kirk
Susie Van Kirk Papers
With its exceptional array of Victorian and turn-of-the- century commercial and residential structures, Ferndale is recognized statewide as a place of historic significance. Individual structures are notable examples of late 19th and early 20th century styles, many displaying the opulent applied ornamentation of the period. But the significance of this collection is not simply that of individual structures; rather, it is the architectural and historic integrity of the town as a whole that preserves a Victorian character rarely found in late 20th century America. These notable examples are supported by a sprinkling of settlement-period house types and good representatives of …

Raab House, Susie Van Kirk
Raab House, Susie Van Kirk
Susie Van Kirk Papers
The architectural integrity of the house continues to be impaired by past and on-going alterations. Window and door changes along with major interior reconstruction have altered the house considerably from its original appearance. It is the addition on the southwest corner, however, that is so intrusive as to permanently compromise the house's historic architecture. For this reason, I am recommending denial of the application for historic designation.

The Baiocchi House, Susie Van Kirk
The Baiocchi House, Susie Van Kirk
Susie Van Kirk Papers
The house at 895 7th Street is a two-story, hipped-roof box with 1/1 windows and a central entrance. This house type was built locally in the first decade of the 20th century and is notable for its exterior simplicity and lack of decoration. Removal of the one-story porch across the front, replacement of the original front door, and enclosure of the rear porch are major alterations.
Arcata has several examples of this house type, but only this one and the house at the northwest corner of 15th and I Streets have retained their original character. The house directly across 7th …
