Designing A Modular French Drain Driveway: Addressing The Impact Of Stormwater Runoff From Residential Communities, Tomer Baltinester
Designing A Modular French Drain Driveway: Addressing The Impact Of Stormwater Runoff From Residential Communities, Tomer Baltinester
Construction Management
Stormwater runoff poses a significant threat to the environment and can have in impact on public health. Contaminants from our homes accumulate in stormwater and flow down our streets into our sewer systems. Ultimately, the hazardous water ends up in various natural waterways, creating a substantial pollution problem which harms the local ecosystem. Of the millions of driveways across the country, almost all are underutilizing the footage of land that they are occupying. By developing an easy-to-incorporate drainage system, a large portion of stormwater that would normally flow into the street can be contained within the property beneath the driveway. …
Skins+Fabrications: Addressing Fashion And Clothing Waste, Renee Palmer
Skins+Fabrications: Addressing Fashion And Clothing Waste, Renee Palmer
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Articles of clothing; they are the second organ, the Second Skin. Their functions are to protect the body from the harsh external elements and create a sense of design with Fashion—the same as exterior facades on a building. However, where architecture and Fashion differ is sustainability.
The Global fashion industry contributes 10% of greenhouse emissions. From that 10%, about 13 million tonnes of clothing waste ends up in landfills or burned. Most of the waste comes from the Fast Fashion Industry, which sees cheap labor from underdeveloped countries to maximize profits. These companies will spend a good portion of their …
Solving Pollution Through Design Integration: A Sustainable Model For Underdeveloped Mexican Cities, Marcos Cruz
Solving Pollution Through Design Integration: A Sustainable Model For Underdeveloped Mexican Cities, Marcos Cruz
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Oaxaca requires an architecture that can cleanse the environment, provide affordable and clean energy, and mitigate the crime and poverty within their city. Community awareness is key to the development of this architecture, and this project will focus on creating a design that influences and informs the community about a safer and more sustainable way of life. This project will focus on using the United Nations sustainability goals to address the global challenges we face including poverty, climate, and inequality. This thesis will create a building that will integrate these goals while still maintaining the cultural aspect within the region. …
Environmental Justice In Little Village: A Case For Reforming Chicago’S Zoning Law, Charles Isaacs
Environmental Justice In Little Village: A Case For Reforming Chicago’S Zoning Law, Charles Isaacs
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
Chicago’s Little Village community bears the heavy burden of environmental injustice and racism. The residents are mostly immigrants and people of color who live with low levels of income, limited access to healthcare, and disproportionate levels of dangerous air pollution. Before its retirement, Little Village’s Crawford coal-burning power plant was the lead source of air pollution, contributing to 41 deaths, 550 emergency room visits, and 2,800 asthma attacks per year. After the plant’s retirement, community members wanted a say on the future use of the lot, only to be closed out when a corporation, Hilco Redevelopment Partners, bought the lot …

Resurrecting A Fallen Angel: Architecture Remediating Pollution In Mexico City, Karen Rios
Resurrecting A Fallen Angel: Architecture Remediating Pollution In Mexico City, Karen Rios
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Mexico City's population of over twenty-one million inhabitants makes it the second largest city in the world. Consequently, air pollution levels in the capital are outrageous.
The following proposal is not an attempt at fixing the city's pollution issues but, rather, presenting an innovative solution to be adopted throughout the city. The thesis aims at solving the contamination crisis' physical and psychological aspects.
That is, a combination of architectural intervention and community involvement will help slow down the rising pollution levels in a once beautiful city. Perhaps starting at a micro scale and spreading throughout the city.

Remediating The Garment Industry, Kellie Knight
Remediating The Garment Industry, Kellie Knight
Masters Theses
This thesis culminated from an interest in addressing the pollution by the dye processes of the textile industry on the Earth’s waterbodies. The first Phase of this thesis explored the globalization of the garment industry. The movement of production was tracked over time from the 1950’s when production occurred primarily in the United States and Europe to present day when production is worldwide. With the global spread of the industry came the global spread of its pollutants.
The second phase of the thesis investigated the functioning of the fashion industry itself to determine which process from production to distribution is …
Civic Composition: An Architectural Solution To An Urban Problem, Kaan Sanalan
Civic Composition: An Architectural Solution To An Urban Problem, Kaan Sanalan
Architecture Thesis Prep
The project I am proposing, “A New Way to Expand our
Cities: a Concentration of Civic Infrastructure”, offers a
solution to this ill growth expansion. A hyper dense populated
city big enough to support public transportation and
other amenities less populated areas do not, in simpler
terms, human oriented cities with concentrated civic infrastructures
(for example: schools, city halls, museums, spa
centers, transportation centers, commercial areas and low
income housing). This can be done easily with the encouragement
of the private sector and no zoning or mixed use,
but instead, more general rules and guidance which create
more opportunity to …
Water Water Everywhere: Analyzing Long Island's Water Issues And Finding Solutions For A Sustainable Future, Anthony T. Becker
Water Water Everywhere: Analyzing Long Island's Water Issues And Finding Solutions For A Sustainable Future, Anthony T. Becker
2014 Student Theses
Over three million people call Long Island their home. With access to beautiful landscapes, world-renowned beaches, and proximity to New York City, it is no wonder that so many proudly call this geographic stretch of glacial till their home. However, throughout the years our actions do not necessarily reflect this affection we have to our home. Years of sprawl and human infestation across the island have resulted in widespread environmental degradation. Specifically, the water we drink and the beaches we enjoy have become endangered. I plan on studying the urban ecology of how intensified population growth led to the eutrophication …
A Sacred And Secular Landscape: Empowering Social Agency, Shreya Shah
A Sacred And Secular Landscape: Empowering Social Agency, Shreya Shah
Architecture Senior Theses
"I contend that landscape can provoke an idea for a productive, public space using the people of the city as social agents to create a sensitive rather than oppressive water remediation system. By inventing a program that uses landscape as a water remediation space as well as landscape as a religious and social space, the project will exhibit the idea that social agents can inform a change in the water pollution crisis."

Risd Rag January 1972, Students Of Risd, Risd Archives
All Student Newspapers
The RISD Rag was a student publication released in the spring of 1972, first on a monthly basis and later on a bi-weekly basis. The issue of January 1972 included an article about the local food co-ops, and the lack of diversity in the RISD faculty and at the RISD Museum. Support was wanted for farm workers and there was an appeal for a sick child. Voter registration information was listed for each state and parking ticket information for Providence was provided. Recipes, an art exhibit review, the Franklin Mint Bicentennial Medal Design contest and comics were also in this …
