Origami In Design : How Can Origami Inform The Design Of The Kinetic Façade System?, Nicolas Ackerman May 2023

Origami In Design : How Can Origami Inform The Design Of The Kinetic Façade System?, Nicolas Ackerman

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

The present goal as a designer is to create a very thoughtful building that presents itself as a visual identity for our built environment. One of the intentions of the design is to not impact more into the co2 emissions. With 40 percent of the 75 percent annual global Greenhouse emissions coming from building operations, (Architecture 2030), we as designers must shift from a formal to a performance-based architecture. An architecture that instinctively addresses reduced energy consumption and therefore lower CO2 emissions through the integration of passive design strategies. In order to compete in a future with CO2 reduction, we …

Ritual, Spectacle, And Theatre In Late Medieval Seville (Chapter 1), Christopher B. Swift Jan 2023

Ritual, Spectacle, And Theatre In Late Medieval Seville (Chapter 1), Christopher B. Swift

Publications and Research

From the fall of Islamic Išbīliya in 1248 to the conquest of the New World, Seville was a nexus of economic and religious power where interconfessional living among Christians, Jews, and Muslims was negotiated on public stages. From out of seemingly irreconcilable ideologies of faith, hybrid performance culture emerged in spectacles of miraculous transformation, disciplinary processionals, and representations of religious identity. Ritual, Spectacle, and Theatre in Late Medieval Seville reinvigorates the study of medieval Iberian theater by revealing the ways in which public expressions of devotion, penance, and power fostered cultural reciprocity, rehearsed religious difference, and ultimately helped establish Seville …

Unseen Body, Unheard Voice, Chunxin Yu

Masters Theses

If there is only one place that I know well of, it would be my own body. A living site that has endured all the changing inhabiting environment and all the unwanted judgment, manipulation, even violence - my identity will collapse without its physical entity.

The conscious and unconscious focus on the body makes me highly alert and responsive to the immediate surroundings, from the bathroom at home to an open street in the public. My knowledge of spaces and their relationships is formed by the repetitive experience of them in everyday life.

As an active user of the Bayard …

Disney During Covid-19: The Tourist And The Actor’S Nightmare, Jennifer A. Kokai, Tom Robson Apr 2022

Disney During Covid-19: The Tourist And The Actor’S Nightmare, Jennifer A. Kokai, Tom Robson

Journal of Themed Experience and Attractions Studies

In this essay, we argue that the experience of being at Disney theme parks in COVID times was a waking version of what is sometimes called “The Actor’s Nightmare.” Due to safety regulations, theme parks either dropped live entertainment that structures the day as a show with a clear beginning and end (e.g. park-opening rope drop performances, and the fireworks), attempted to include references to COVID in live entertainment (like in

the Frozen Ever After singalong, which added some COVID jokes), or to ignore it (like the Festival of the Lion King). In any case, due to these measures the …

Moisture Monitoring Of A Clt Structure In A Southern Climate, Elizabeth Poblete Dec 2020

Moisture Monitoring Of A Clt Structure In A Southern Climate, Elizabeth Poblete

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Understanding of moisture behavior in cross laminated timber (CLT) is critical to the widespread use of CLT in construction in the United States. Currently, very little data exists on the long-term impact of moisture on CLT. The objective of this research is to collect data regarding the long-term moisture variation in the CLT panel at the University of Arkansas Adohi Hall residence hall. The climate of Northwest Arkansas is different from previously monitored buildings, as they were in the Pacific Northwest. Comparatively, Northwest Arkansas has a warmer climate with higher average annual precipitation. Waterproofing efforts are usually employed to prevent …

Architectural Body: Performance As Design Methodology Facilitating Transformative Learning, Takako Hasegawa Oct 2020

Architectural Body: Performance As Design Methodology Facilitating Transformative Learning, Takako Hasegawa

Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)

This paper will discuss multidisciplinary and experimental pedagogical case studies that place the importance of the body firmly back into architectural education. The advanced digital technologies currently employed almost universally in architectural education generate increasingly virtual and augmented design, resulting from processes that tend to be devoid of imagination of the body. The case studies discussed in this paper involved students’ direct participation in performative acts during the design process, facilitating positive transformative learning through direct experience. These include design briefs for Chelsea College of Arts (London, UK, 2009–2013), modules for the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA) (London, UK, …

Manifested Tectonic 'In Search Of Theatricality', Ching Huen Leung

Architecture Senior Theses

A column at a scale of a chair, a door half-opened in front of that column. Dancing, spectating, running, etc. Can an open-ending narrative be generated through the interaction between these disembodied objects and subjects? Treating building elements as set pieces, improvisations are generated by both signified objects and participants. The show is currently on play in different locations: You can find it in a field of landscape; in a chaotic street of Tokyo, or even at the back alley near your neighborhood…Don’t hesitate to create your own plot when you encounter them! My thesis mainly focuses on the implementation …

The Performance Of Light: Exploring The Impact Of Natural Lighting In The New Umass School Of Performance, Dylan Brown Jul 2017

The Performance Of Light: Exploring The Impact Of Natural Lighting In The New Umass School Of Performance, Dylan Brown

Masters Theses

This thesis explores how natural light can be integrated with built form to create a “performance of light” in architecture. Lighting conditions from a contemporary dance piece, as well as other architectural precedents, were studied, and aspects adapted into the building’s design. In addition to designing theatrical effects of light, the classroom and administrative spaces were designed to take advantage of natural light. Daylight studies were used to inform glazing design and material selection to stay within illuminance thresholds in the spaces.

This project is responding to the facility needs of the campus of UMass Amherst where the program of …

The Spatiality In Storytelling, Xiang Yu Jul 2016

The Spatiality In Storytelling, Xiang Yu

Masters Theses

Theatre has always been played a irreplaceable role in people’s lives, even nowadays where people have multiple choices for entertainment. Some theater architecture has also become the symbol of the city, such as Paris Opéra and Sydney Opera House. By taking a close look at various case studies, one will understand how the theatre architecture corresponds with their city representing its history, culture and visions for the future.

The development of my thesis is based on the integration of the ‘space’ of storytelling and the space of design. Will the quality of space bring out the memories that have been …

Performative Architecture | A Measurable Means Of Evaluating Formal Systems, Garrett Marini May 2016

Performative Architecture | A Measurable Means Of Evaluating Formal Systems, Garrett Marini

Architecture Senior Theses

The Gothic, Baroque, and Rococo architectural styles relied on perception and an underlying adherence to classical formulas to provide merit and deem an architecture valid. Up through the 19th century before the emergence of modernism these established canons would reemerge both in isolation and as an amalgam of styles. Henry Russell Hitchcock describes this latter episodic phase of building as exhibiting an eclecticism of style, where features of different styles are used together on a single building like those in the Beaux- Arts tradition. In the early 20th century, Louis Sullivan’s modernist dictum of “Form Follows Function,” while seemingly providing …

Analysis Of The Construction Waste Management Performance In Hongkong: The Public And Private Sectors Compared Using Big Data, Weisheng Lu, Xi Chen, Daniel Chi Wing Ho, Hongdi Wang Jan 2016

Analysis Of The Construction Waste Management Performance In Hongkong: The Public And Private Sectors Compared Using Big Data, Weisheng Lu, Xi Chen, Daniel Chi Wing Ho, Hongdi Wang

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

There is an ongoing debate concerning the disparity between the public and private sectors in relation to construction waste management (CWM) performance: some argue that CWM performance between the two sectors should have no difference since they are under the governance of the same set of CWM related regulations, while others argue that public sector clients should perform better as they are subject to greater social scrutiny. Previous studies comparing CWM performance have suffered from insufficient quality data, leaving the debate on the CWM performance disparity largely inconclusive. Informed by the Coase Invariant Theorem, this research empirically compares CWM performance …

Measuring Construction: Prices, Output And Productivity, Rick Best, Jim Meikle Sep 2015

Measuring Construction: Prices, Output And Productivity, Rick Best, Jim Meikle

Rick Best

Despite the size, complexity and importance of the construction industry, there has been little study to date which focuses on the challenge of drawing reliable conclusions from the available data. The accuracy of industry reports has an impact on government policy, the direction and outcomes of research and the practices of construction firms, so confusion in this area can have far reaching consequences. In response to this, Measuring Construction looks at fundamental economic theories and concepts with respect to the construction industry, and explains the merits and shortcomings, sometimes by looking at real life examples.

Acoustics Of The Louis Armstrong Theatre, Bailey Groendyke Jan 2015

Acoustics Of The Louis Armstrong Theatre, Bailey Groendyke

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Like many multipurpose auditoriums, the Louis Armstrong Theatre (LAT) at Grand Valley State University has been reported by a considerable number of students and faculty to have unsatisfactory acoustics for music performance. This study focused on physical measurements and simulated changes to LAT. Reverberation time (RT) was measured by filling LAT with sound and measuring the decay for select frequencies as per ASTM E2235 protocol, and the initial time delay gap (ITDG) was determined using slapsticks as an impulsive sound source. A model of LAT was also constructed from blueprints and physical measurements; simulations using this model were conducted using …

Perfomance Pedagogy, Dana Hareli Dec 2014

Perfomance Pedagogy, Dana Hareli

Architecture Thesis Prep

The deterioration of performance-based learning in contemporary educational practices, fostering one-to-one teaching models, prompts a discussion of the implications of theatricality on design education and the role of performance pedagogy in the architectural discipline. The Montessori method of education is a child-centered educational approach, which views the child as eager and capable of initiating learning in a supportive and prepared learning environment

Greening Greenpoint: Investigating Technology And Environment-Based Design, Adam Castelli Aug 2014

Greening Greenpoint: Investigating Technology And Environment-Based Design, Adam Castelli

Masters Theses

This thesis investigates architectural design with a focus on technology and parametric, or computational, design strategies in relation to environmental simulation and sustainability. While numerous studies of new digital and parametric design technologies have been undertaken, few discuss their potential application or synergy with sustainable or environmentally focused design. However, there is increasing interest in bridging the perceived gap between these areas of focus in architectural design, as will be discussed in a section on recent symposia related to performance and design technologies. The research project seeks to apply insight gained from these studies to a design project to be …

Construction Efficiency: A Tale Of Two Developed Countries, Craig Langston Jun 2014

Construction Efficiency: A Tale Of Two Developed Countries, Craig Langston

Craig Langston

Purpose - The measurement of construction performance is a vexed problem. Despite much research effort, there remains little agreement over what to measure and how to measure it. The problem is made even more complicated by the desire to benchmark national industry performance against that of other countries. As clearly construction cost forms part of the analysis, the mere adjustment of cost data to an "international currency" has undermined past attempts to draw any meaningful conclusions. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - This paper introduces a new method for comparing international construction efficiency, tested on a data …

The Immersive Spectacle: Performance And The Audience In Pop Music - Part 1, Emily Roupp Apr 2014

The Immersive Spectacle: Performance And The Audience In Pop Music - Part 1, Emily Roupp

Architecture Senior Theses

THESIS STATEMENT: In a visually dominated culture, spaces of sound have the potential to produce an immersive audio-physical experience that facil~ates spatial awareness and challenges traditional listening experiences. The aural and spatial awareness is unquestionable. Although it is a primitive human refiex to direct visual focus to the original sound source, technological and architectural devices no longer require the sound source to be in the same space as the distributed sound Recording and distribution devices have deconstructed the relationship between sound and space. Technological innovations, especially speakers and digital screens, no longer require the listener to be in a single …

Competition Environment, Strategy And Performance In The Hong Kong Construction Industry, Yongtao Tan, Liyin Shen, Craig Langston

Craig Langston

Given a changing competition environment, strategic management has become of essential importance to construction firms. Effective strategy enables construction firms to match their activities to the changing environment and achieve superior performance in competition. Therefore, there is a need for studying contractors’ competitive strategies. This paper does that in relation to the Hong Kong construction industry. The impact of competition environment on contractor performance, and the relationship between competitive strategy and performance are examined by a questionnaire survey. The findings show that competition environment has a great impact on contractor performance, and four generic competitive strategies have been applied by …

Using Sequential Mixed Social Science Methods To Define And Measure Heritage Conservation Performance, Jeremy C. Wells Jan 2011

Using Sequential Mixed Social Science Methods To Define And Measure Heritage Conservation Performance, Jeremy C. Wells

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

There is no agreed-upon definition for heritage conservation performance, but it is possible to borrow ideas from the natural resource conservation field to inform this concept. Dimensions of performance can include economic, technical, and sociocultural and experiential indices. Because heritage conservation ostensibly benefits people as its primary goal, however, the values of most stakeholders ought to play a role in defining performance. Most of these values are subjective and represent sociocultural and personal meanings and tend to differ dramatically from the positivistic, fabric-centered value system of conservation experts. Measurement implies quantification, yet many sociocultural values are based on qualitative meanings …

Be All You Can Be! Then Two Steps To The Left And Scopic Operations In Military Theatre, Alex Coulombe Apr 2010

Be All You Can Be! Then Two Steps To The Left And Scopic Operations In Military Theatre, Alex Coulombe

Architecture Senior Theses

"The criteria for which I would ask to be evealuated include three essential categories, all relating back to how well i have modified Fort Jay to be a theater within its context. First, I would like to be judged by how well I exploit the latent theatrical opportunities of the site, both on urban and local scales. Second, I would like it to be considered how well the design would function as a performance venue, especially when compared to a conventional design. Finally, I would like my critiquers to judge the theater from a purely experiential standpoint."
