This paper studies the accessibility of car-free areas to those with mobility impairments by examining three car-free and car-lite experiments in California. Whether slowly converted to car-free with long-term, careful planning, or expeditiously changed to car-free during the COVID-19 pandemic, these three car-free experiments show the shortcomings of planning for accessibility in car-free spaces, and how instead of improving accessibility, current planning practice often hinders it. Single-functioning infrastructure produces residual spaces within the urban fabric of a city. Existing structures may be ‘thickened’ through the implementation of different programs. The singularity of infrastructural elements creates a ‘clean’ environment lacking use or character. Infrastructure is a public service that enables human interaction. “Thickening” the infrastructure with public programs, either formally or informally, may facilitate an ‘event’ happening between individuals. My thesis asserts that within the urban voids generated by existing infrastructure, public programs may be implemented in order to promote spaces that encourage different human transactions and encounters, to create a spatial identity.

In this article, I explore the contemporary practice of air travel conceptualizing airports as socio-technical mobilities. Drawing both from the notion of “space” posited by Michel de Certeau and that of “non-place” by Marc Augé, I argue that the supermodern nature of air travel has generated forms of crisis that have embedded themselves in the architecture and the modus operandi of contemporary airports. Airports are necessarily located in a physical and tangible sense, yet their function is so tightly coupled with transience, mobility and spectatorship, that they bring anthropological accounts of “place” to unprecedented extremes.
