Temporal Markets And An Architecture Of Time - Inclusion Legitimacy And Emergence- Part 1, Ariel Minelli

Architecture Senior Theses

The structure is a formal response to the emergent occupation of space at the Kadikoy Sali Pazari. The project generates a permanence for a threatened temporal entity, while creating a system of temporal occupation that reprograms the unbuildable space of the existing site. The tactics and systems employed are largely drawn from the embedded intelligence of Istanbul's temporary markets and the quasi-legality of the cities rapidly expanding gecekondu communities.

The attempt to purge the city of its squatter heritage is startling and raises questions of cultural and architectural integrity in urban development. Istanbul’s desire for expanded global investment and tourism is particularly apparent in the industrial district of Kartal, whose blended development is the subject of this study. Jane Jacobs …

Perartisan Intervention: Place Syntax As Socio-Urban Catalyst, Fahir Burak Unel

Architecture Senior Theses

"Culturally-informed spatial network analysis, achieved through the joint use Hillerian Space Syntax Theory and traditional understandings of place-making in architecture, can enable and facilitate the creation of effective, site-specific social condensers that can ultimately act as a solution to Galata-Pera's post-20th-century problem of community attrition caused by the erosion of traditional commercial culture that historically defined Istanbulite social identity."
