Re*Presenting Dharavi: Activism And Agency Of Architecture In Informal Settlements, Ahnaf Chowdhury, Anuradha Desai
Architecture Senior Theses
Plastic recycling is a critical informal economy in Dharavi, one of Asia's largest slums in the heart of Mumbai. Waste from dumping grounds is collected, sorted and prepared by recyclers who transform trash into a commodity to be sold back into the city. As part of top-down efforts to redevelop Dharavi's valuable land, the Mumbai government has tarnished the industry's image, labeling it as "polluting," and has increased the cost of utilities such as electricity in an effort to drive it out of the community. As it becomes more expensive for recyclers to operate, the labor unions that organize the …

Learning From The Informal: Designing A New Housing Typology For Informal Development In Cairo, Cherif Farid
Architecture Senior Theses
This thesis examines what to design when designing for the informal and questions the role of the architect. The project combines the inherent qualities of the informal; self-built, incremental construction, and flexibility of spatial uses, with alternative urban design strategies.
The design strategy is to control the ground plane and roof scape, while leaving an open frame in between to be incrementally filled with housing. This frame allows residents to voice their identity by physically constructing their homes. It introduces an urban system that is composed of blocks that consist of an aggregation of identical units. The blocks are connected …

Utilizing a typological understanding of the spatial conditions of informal settlements to help suggest how interventions will affect conditions is the goal. Understanding the beneficial aspects of communal space created as well as the nature of adaptability within the settlement provides architects with a better understanding of where and how they might intervene. Simulating the conditions of an informal settlement digitally would help to better understand the individualistic agency involved in their creation. Modeling the inter-relational actions between neighboring entities within the system allows for the system to be understood more complexly than before. Designers would be able to add …
Informal Landscape Architecture: A Tool To Improve Water Quality For Informal Settlements Along Waterways In Bangkok, Jidapa Chayakul
Informal Landscape Architecture: A Tool To Improve Water Quality For Informal Settlements Along Waterways In Bangkok, Jidapa Chayakul
LSU Master's Theses
The canals of Bangkok were a vital form of infrastructure from when the city was founded in 1782 until the 1850s, when the road system was introduced. Built for agricultural irrigation, the canals served as the primary means of transportation and significantly influenced the form and orientation of Bangkok’s early settlements and public institutions. With the implementation of roads, new buildings were constructed to be oriented towards the streets and away from the canals. The canals and their communities subsequently decreased in visibility. Today, most of the land along the waterways is publically owned. As a result, the land adjacent …
