Remembering A Hidden Space: Stitching Memorial Architecture With A Subterranean Tunnel System Of The Slave Trade, Olivia Harrell

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

To my ancestors. Imagine the British raiding your homeland in the middle of the night… being taken away from your family all to be taken to the dungeons of Cape Coast Castle…being forced on a dark ship, stacked on top of another flesh, praying to God to survive the long voyage. Gracefully, you reach landfall, only to be examined and sorted, to have your last name stripped away from you…seeing the sick woman that lied next you on the voyage, be dumped into the Atlantic Ocean and left to drown…being forced to build the underground barracks, that you would live …

Research: Planning And Provision Of Public Infrastructure. A Case Study Of Drainage Canals In Tema, Ghana.Pdf, Kwadwo Gyan

Kwadwo Gyan

Rapid urbanization is a threat to the efficient and proactive provision of basic urban infrastructure. Nonetheless, existing formal regulations and design standards in Ghanaian cities are often outmoded, too expensive, cumbersome to implement and inconsistent with the incremental urban development practices that are prevalent. In response to this, many urban residents have resorted to self-financing and -provision of their basic infrastructure based on their resource capacities- time, money, and labor. The report explores this situation in Tema, a Ghanaian city with both planned and unplanned neighborhoods, with a focus on its drainage systems. The study addresses the broader question: How …

Verge Of Erosion: Adaption To The Coastal Climatic Change, Jamison Barger

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Today the question of coastal erosion and the devastation that it brings is no longer a matter of if, but when.

This project aims at developing an adaptive approach towards design in attempt to develop a new coastal typology that adapts to the dynamic condition of coastal erosion, and addresses future projections of sea level rise. The proposal will be applied in Fuveme in the Volta Region of Ghana, West Africa, which is presently on the verge of being wiped out entirely due to a vastly reseeding shoreline. The thesis will center on elements such as the environment, ecology, society, …

Inspired by the Fanti of Ghana.

What inspired you to enter this special competition to create a modern architectural language for Africa?

Growing up in the Caribbean and currently living in Ghana, I‘ve been interested in the conversation surrounding the development and definition of both a Caribbean‘ style and African‘ style and the cultural, social, political and historical issues that surround this. The competition seemed like a perfect avenue to continue to investigate these interests.

What did you find most interesting or challenging during the research and development of your prototype?

Trying to study and investigate the traditional …

The Urban Neighborhood Collective, Angel David Nieves May 1994

The Urban Neighborhood Collective, Angel David Nieves

Architecture Senior Theses

The study of development in traditional urban Africa is relevant to the contemporary American architect as it offers the possibility to him or her of a neighborhood form that responds to current American social problems. The form of this new American neighborhood might parallel the African village, a strong paradigm reflecting humankind in a non-alienating relationship with the environment. Our urban areas have deteriorated over the past century, in part because planners and architects seemingly have little understanding of the needs of humankind[...] The lack of self expression that humankind faces at home, at work, and in the community weakens …
