Architecture Senior Theses
The advent of hyper consumerism has led to the proliferation of electronic waste, or e-waste. Our constant cycle of demand, production, and disposal has had detrimental local impacts on developing countries. This thesis redefines Agdogbloshie's future after its demolition as the new testing ground for e-waste reuse, recycling and detoxification, utilizing plants with phytoremediation properties. As the desire for new products continues to grow, along with the rising of demand for sustainable energy equipment, the world needs to focus on utilizing all resources on hand. In the viable future where e-waste becomes the new gold, Agbogbloshie will transform from being …

Representational Forms: Storytelling Of Climate Change, Hayden Cudaback
Representational Forms: Storytelling Of Climate Change, Hayden Cudaback
Masters in Architecture Program: Theses
Climate change is recognized as one of the biggest threats to our natural world and its biodiversity, as well as to global security, human health and well-being. We are already witnessing the early effects of climate change, with more frequent, extreme weather events and changing seasonal patterns being seen around the world.
Climate change is a complex object that you can’t physically connect with. Its effects can be felt, but climate change itself is an entity that people can’t understand the depth and magnitude. This characteristic of climate change makes any depiction related to its effects static and two dimensional. …

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the future potential impact that the library typology has on society and how the architecture of these spaces can influence usage andchange. Libraries have been one of man-kind’s most inspirational systems that have provided spaces to store information and to educate oneself. As the typology progressed it became an important part of each community and provided patrons with new opportunities that they might not regularly have. With the role that this typology currently takes, it allows for the possibility for improvements of social issues within multiple communities. By focusing on select issues, …

This joint creative project examines ordinary suburban architecture through a neutral lens. American suburbs are often a source of vibrant debate in architectural discourse. The goal of this research was not to contribute to the endorsement or condemnation of suburbia, but to instead study the composition of these common place typologies. The three typologies studied in this project were shopping malls, big box stores, and gas stations; each of these has a distinct organization and set of characteristics that separates it from the others. After studying the basic components, interventions were made to transform each building in unique ways. This …

Intermodal Transit Terminal: Integrating The Future Of Transit Into The Urban Fabric, Guy Vigneau
Intermodal Transit Terminal: Integrating The Future Of Transit Into The Urban Fabric, Guy Vigneau
Masters Theses
The very foundation of transportation relies on its ability to efficiently move people and goods through a transitional space. Transportation hubs are key to achieving this goal. However, many transit terminals are outdated or poorly designed to fit the needs of the modern world. At the core of this thesis are two overarching questions. First, how do we design intermodal transit terminals so that they successfully integrate into an existing urban fabric? Second, how do we design for innovative modes of transportation, such as hyperloop technology? This thesis explores how architectural design can recover existing transit connections within an urban …

In the summer of 2016 a technology revolution swept the world from an unsuspecting place, a mobile game called Pokémon: Go. Almost immediately upon release, this application reached white-hot growth with a user-base spanning the globe, sparking new methods of interacting with communities. Behind the app, a driving force of the popularity, is the technology known as augmented reality (AR). This innovative medium, which intersects the “real-world” with the “digital-world,” is set to impact many aspects of life. As planning professionals are closely involved with the development and growth of communities, this thesis serves as a tool to determine how …

In November 2016 I was asked to make a presentation at the Future Oriented Sustainable Design International Conference in Wuhan in the People's Republic of China. My topic was Design Purpose: What is Design? And who is it for?
The presentation examines the wider aspects of design and its categories and asks who were are actually designing for.
I made a powerpoint presentation that I narrated in English whilst it was simultaneously translated into Chinese for the attendees at the conference. On my return to Ireland I created a soundtrack to accompany the presentation slides for people to watch the …
Speculative Future Metabolic Architecture, Haley Erin Moore
Speculative Future Metabolic Architecture, Haley Erin Moore
Masters Theses
Speculating the implications of a metabolic architecture provides a platform for thinking about a new way of future building. Disaster scenarios such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, nuclear fallouts, and others are unavoidable events. Instead of building compressively, meaning building to defend against scenarios such as disasters, the future should include building in the way a natural system behaves, in flux, with material dependencies, and as an output produced from the exchange of materials, reactions, or responses that occur in a metabolism. Architecture must be thought of as an output of a metabolism, an altered input, where this output is unknown …

Predict And Provide Vs Explore, Envision And Plan: Transforming The Urban Planning Approach Towards The Future, Elzbieta Krawczyk, John Ratcliffe
Articles
Thinking about the future of humanity cannot be separated from thinking about the future of cities. Today, half of the world’s population lives in cities and the number of urban dwellers is constantly growing. On one hand, cities play a key role in generating economic growth; they are cores of human activity and frontiers of technological and cultural progress. On the other, urban areas are a source of a broad range of social and environmental problems and are especially vulnerable to the threats posed by factors such as climate change, terrorism, pandemic, social and cultural clashes. Considering the role and …

The Future Of Office Property, Janine Irons, Lynne Armitage
Lynne Armitage
The following paper considers the question, where to office property? In doing so, it focuses, in the first instance, on identifying and describing a selection of key forces for change present within the contemporary operating environment in which office property functions. Given the increasingly complex, dynamic and multi-faceted character of this environment, the paper seeks to identify only the primary forces for change, within the context of the future of office property. These core drivers of change have, for the purposes of this discussion, been characterised as including a range of economic, demographic and socio-cultural factors, together with developments in …

The scenario method has been widely used by decision-makers in business, industry and government for over thirty years as an unrivalled technique to learn about the future before it happens. This paper examines the principles, practice and pitfalls of scenario building with the prime aim of presenting the technique as one singularly relevant to the study of future property investment, development and management decisions and land use policy formulation. The origins of the approach from its military based beginnings, through the popularised global environmental applications to the current widescale use by industry and commerce are traced. Some definitions are advanced …

Future Water Demand In Cache Valley, Utah, Chris C. Saunders
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The present investigation examined the current water demand characteristics and the future water demand of Cache Valley, Utah for the time period of 1990-2010. The demand attributable to agriculture and seven nonagricultural economics sectors was determined and forecasts were performed based on those demand values.
Linear regression, extrapolation, and alternative futures forecasting methods were applied and the various results compared against each other. Three different scenarios were calculated for residential demand to represent different sources and composition of demand information. It was determined that consideration of water demand data excluding Logan City provided the best statistical description of water demand. …
