Electrochromic glazing has been identified as the next-generation high-performance glazing material for building envelopes due to its dynamic properties, which allow the buildings to respond to various climate conditions. IoT technologies have improved the sensing, communication, and interactions of building environmental data. A direct exchange building integrated photovoltaic and thermal (BIPV/T) heat pump system is proposed where the heat extracted from the BIPV is used to drive the heat pump. To ensure a more stable diurnal system performance, especially at low solar conditions, air flow is instituted in the cavity between BIPV façade and the insulated inner wall. The airflow is directed from the heated or cooled space into the air channel and can be exhausted or returned to the space depending on the building operating conditions. Green roofs provide a myriad of environmental and financial benefits to a building and its owner. They can provide a pleasing outdoor aesthetic in an urban environment, as well as provide stormwater management and energy savings in an arid climate. California State University San Marcos completed a new University Student Union in 2014 that included a 2,540 square foot Live Roof system on its upper terrace. Supplier, contractor, and facilities team members were interviewed to analyze the success of the project from several viewpoints. Daylighting is one of the most challenging aspects of an ecological building design. The dynamic nature of daylight along with a wide range of individual preferences makes it a complex design issue. The art of daylighting relies on fine-tuning a delicate balance between admitting sufficient daylight for occupant well being and task performance and preventing glare and over heating. The success of chilled ceilings and displacement ventilation systems as a means of sensible cooling in buildings has prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of generating the required cooling water. When such cooling water is generated at low approach conditions (2–5 K), at the higher temperatures required in these systems (14–18°C), very high levels of availability result. In many north western European locations the levels of availability are such that the prospect of supplanting rather than simply supplementing the refrigeration system, for sensible cooling purposes, arises. Energy-efficient designs in clothing, interior architecture and furnishings were evaluated (a) to assess consumers’ attitudes toward the designs, (b) to compare acceptability levels of participants who were knowledgeable in the home energy field with those who were less knowledgeable and (c) to determine if consumers had a preference for using housing, clothing or furnishings in meeting their thermal comfort needs. Four designs generated by the University of Tennessee-Energy Design competition were evaluated: a leisure outfit, a lounging dress, a water-storage collector (room divider and coffee tables) and a solar waterbed.
