Curated Disorders, Nathanael Bengio

Architecture Thesis Prep

By using the techniques of contradiction that existed in Dadaism fused with those of psychoanalysis and defamiliarization in Surrealism and Nouveau-Realism, my thesis examines the possibility of an architectural typology that critiques hyper-functionalities, anonymous ornament and the general facelessness of most commercialized architecture today. Within the context of a Haussmannian facade will be created a simple matrix that allows for the displacement of architectural elements in and out of their intended contexts leading to the curation of the reverse, the disordered twin.

A funhouse, a building equipped with trick mirrors, shifting floors, and other devices designed to scare or amuse people as they walk through is the program of choice. Funhouses are designed for the perception of the user. They provide an amusing architecture, as well as an architecture driven by position, form, and most importantly, experience.

Parametric Tools In The Design Process, Robert B. Marcalow Aug 2014

Parametric Tools In The Design Process, Robert B. Marcalow

Masters Theses

The recent revolution in digital design tools is having a sea-change effect on the way buildings are designed. As the design process becomes increasingly automated, the focus of architectural expertise is shifting from the execution of drawings to the parametric definition of space and form. In other words, the architect will define a complex set of rules that, when entered into a program, create a building. This design process, coupled with digital fabrication, allows for control of the final product in ways that were previously impossible for designers. However, there is still much to learn about the ways these new …

The Hand And The Machine: A Hybrid Approach To Complex Construction In A Work Of Sir Peter Cook, Chris Knapp May 2014

The Hand And The Machine: A Hybrid Approach To Complex Construction In A Work Of Sir Peter Cook, Chris Knapp

Chris Knapp

This paper describes and provides a critique of the design and implementation of the “scoops” – a set of bespoke multifunctioning architectural free-form concrete elements that are a highlight of the new Soheil Abedian School of Architecture by the office of Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham (CRAB). The development includes the transfer of analogue design processes into digital 3d modelling, which is then analysed and rationalized via an exchange with consultants and procurement contractors. The complexity of the concrete works necessitated the use of digital fabrication to make their implementation affordable and within time constraints, with said complexity creating …

Preserving Legacy: The Development Of The Design Workshop Archives And Digital Collection At Utah State University, Amanda J. Dunlap May 2014

Preserving Legacy: The Development Of The Design Workshop Archives And Digital Collection At Utah State University, Amanda J. Dunlap

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Though magazines, books, and slideshows have attempted to share glimpses of landscape architecture, its fixed geographic location inherently limits who can experience it. In a move to address this dilemma, Design Workshop has partnered with Utah State University's Merrill-Cazier Library Special Collections and the Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Department to capture the firm's definitive works. The creation of the Design Workshop Archives and Digital Collection conveys the firm's story, sharing it with a broad and diverse audience through the use of physical archives, a digitally accessible partner, oral histories, and online learning objects to be utilized in the classroom. …

Thick Images: Rendering Digital Dimensions- Part 1, Jeff Nedelka

Architecture Senior Theses

Thick Images is an investigation into the creation, perception, and possibilities of digital architectural representation. Rethinking the relationship between rendering and building, among other design possibilities, Thick images considers the qualities and characteristics both inherent to and demanded of the digital, and suggests new ways of reading and deploying common, contemporary image making tools.
