Masters Theses
Globalization and mass migration has propelled a hybrid existence, as individuals that occupy multiple geographies we live in a constant state of translation. Our museums and cultural institutions are in opposition to this; static, preserved and de-contextualized. At the intersection of printmaking and architecture, this thesis proposes a living archive to document the collective migratory journey across sites, materials, and hybrid identities. A network of centers for knowledge sharing and production centered on India and its diaspora. As art practices and people migrate, cultural production evolves with its context, gaining new meaning as it changes hands generationally and globally.

Revitalizing The Borderlines Through Architecture Of Green Networking - Case Study: Beirut, Lebanon, Karim Al-Khatib, Maged Youssef, Mona M. Salem
BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development
Borders are an essential part of cities and countries, and they can create both physical and cultural divides. Inner-city borders can lead to social isolation and inequality, which can contribute to tensions and conflicts. Borders around the world have become a symbol of conflict, racism, fear, inequity, and division. One single line could divide between opportunity and hope and poverty and oblivion. Accordingly, some borders create social isolation between various cultures in cities that increase socio-political problems and remove urban connectivity. Green networking involves using urban green spaces, such as parks and gardens, to connect different areas of a city …

Discussing Different Images Of Pharmaceutical Company, Roula Afif Bou Assi, Ola Bazaza
BAU Journal - Creative Sustainable Development
Every organization is a complex, non-linear, and dynamic system. Gareth Morgan discussed eight different metaphors where they can be useful devices to create mental images to clarify and interpret our organizations. These eight metaphors are: machine, organism, brain, culture, political, flux and transformation, psychic prisons and instruments of domination. This combination of metaphors helps us understand our organization, analyze the structure, the leadership style (NAGY, December 2014). In this paper I will discuss the different metaphors of a pharmaceutical company (X). It is a growing pharmaceutical company, where reading and analyzing the different metaphors will definitely help them to prepare …
Stories Untold: Riddim Of A Contemporary Creole Architecture, Rolando Joseph
Stories Untold: Riddim Of A Contemporary Creole Architecture, Rolando Joseph
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
This thesis is about my interest in the architectural identity within the tropical region, specifically in the Caribbean on the island of Grenada. In this region, colonial and modern architecture have proliferated, often without adequately considering the local environment and its unique contexts. The people of this region have a distinct rhythm of life and a genuine appreciation of their local environment. This cultural rhythm can be seen in the annual celebration of the traditional carnival, filled with colorful costumes, jab-jab mas, and parades that bring the streets to life.
The intent of this thesis is to question the current …

Finding Uhuru, Joanna Waliuba
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Uhuru is Swahili for freedom, freedom that many victims of gender-based violence do not have. Several studies and articles have reported that Gender-based violence is a normalized global pandemic3. This normalization hides a bigger problem of lack of proper facilities and care services that aid the erosion of gender-based violence. The purpose of my thesis is to design a hub for victims of these crimes. A hub that would facilitate healing for victims and educational resources for the community to tackle the stigma of sexual education and violence. To achieve this, the implementation of trauma-informed care and trauma-informed design governed …

Culture In Disney Films: A Comparative Analysis Of Color, Composition And Rhythm, Megan Paul
Interior Design Undergraduate Honors Theses
As a student of design, I take inspiration from everything around me. The media I consume, the places I visit, and the people I meet.By choice or not, I and my generation are subject to the various forms of pop culture, film is one of them. Film is one of few art forms which combines several methods and elements of design to produce a cohesive result, as opposed to a singular medium. This forms the connection to design thinking and is the foundation for the study.
Another critical component to pop culture is the ability to reach the masses. Due …

Abstract: We live in a constantly changing world, a multi-faceted world vacillating between joy and happiness on one side and sadness and desolation on the other. We have indeed witnessed, recently, much sadness and misfortune resulting from both human and natural disasters. Whether individual or collective, the risks are assessed having regard to our cultural determinism, taking into account values, standards and living conditions of individuals. Our purpose, which falls within the framework of the theory of social representations (Moscovici (1986)), would be to account for the impact of the disaster on the behavior of the individual and of society, …

Neo Collectivism: Public Space Design For The Intergenerational Community, Shu Zhang
Architecture Senior Theses
Within our lifetime, we will see an increase in the aging of the population in China, and the social isolation of the elderly is occurring every day. Simultaneously, more and more young people migrate to large cities, while older family members stay in their home towns to ease the younger generation's burden. The once collectivist family culture has been destroyed, and the daily life of the elderly without their relatives has become monotonous and lonely. Moreover, with the advancement of technology, the younger generation is increasingly dependent on smartphones for social interaction and life, which increases the possibility of the …

Symbolism Of Temple Gates In Ancient Israel, Talitha Hart
Symbolism Of Temple Gates In Ancient Israel, Talitha Hart
Studia Antiqua
The gates of the city and the temple establish boundaries between inner and outer space, while also allowing access to an area that is clearly separated from its surroundings. Throughout ancient Israel, the city gate was seen as representing economic activity, belonging, justice, and strength. I would argue that the gate of the temple represented many of the same things and was seen in a similar way. I have decided to include the tabernacle, as well as both Solomon’s and Herod’s temples, in this analysis, as they seem to have been seen in a similar light even if they were …

Suicide And Culture, Mehmet Eskin
Suicide And Culture, Mehmet Eskin
BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing
The rates of suicidal ideation, attempts and mortality present a large intersocietal variation. This variation is usually attributed to the role of culture, but the issue is still poorly understood. How does culture contribute to the intersocietal or cross-cultural variation of suicidal behavior? How culture might be involved in the onset, maintenance and aggravation of suicidal tendencies? In this paper, I will be discussing possible mechanisms of culture for the onset, maintenance and aggravation of suicidal propensities. Specifically, I will be examining the role of religion, individualistic-collectivistic value orientations, self-construal and survival versus self-expression values for their relevance to suicidal …

Excavating A Future Vision Past: Mike Davis’ City Of Quartz, William Blick
Publications and Research
When Mike Davis published City of Quartz in 1990, his work was widely praised by many and dismissed as liberalist hysteria by others. The reflections it contains on architectural design as a reflection of sociopolitical tumult still strike chords today. This article sets out a reexamination of the text through hindsight, using contemporary and subsequent reviews to consider how the book was relevant at the time of its publication, how it may be relevant today and how it has had a profound impact on sociological and cultural studies.

Dissolving Boundaries: Revitalizing A Forgotten Neighborhood In Los Angeles, Dominic Cirillo
Architecture Theses
Studying great American Cities and their development also gives us insight into the problems many cities have faced during industrialization and urban growth. Los Angeles, California is at the forefront of these issues caused by its age old paradigm of progression and innovation above all in order to reach prosperity. From Bulldozing entire historic districts to constructing over its former rail system in order to accommodate for its rapid growth (twice that of an average city). In this process of urbanizing, the city had almost forgotten about its community identity and neighborhoods. Urban sprawl has caused a weaker city center …

With the financial growth and international acclaim brought about by Guggenheim Museum for Bilbao, the media started to talk about the so-called “Bilbao Effect”. For the next two decades, the general public has been more and more convinced and accustomed to the positive results landmark architecture might brought for their cities. Thus it is worthwhile to explore the root of the Bilbao Effect and to dig into the effects of Guggenheim Museum so that similar industrial cities may select and apply strategies basing on their own conditions.

Ecological Urbanism | Design Strategies For Bridging The Social Gap In Kolkata, Varshil Patel
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Kolkata, India, also known as a “City of Joy” for its vibrant diversity and as one of the most important cultural centers in the country, exemplifies many issues that are related to overpopulation, weak enforcement of planning regulations, informal housing, natural ecological degradation, and lack of social cohesion. The development of modernized neighborhoods in the outskirts coincided with the internal migration of the middle class and furthered the social gap. Wetlands east of the city, which used to provide a substantial amount of food and livelihood for the city, have been diminishing due to urban development. The lack of necessities …

Virtual Reality As A Pedagogical Tool To Design For Social Impact: A Design Case, Tiffany Roman, Jon Racek
Faculty and Research Publications
Three-dimensional (3-D) virtual environments have key affordances that can improve learning, particularly when context, culture, and pedagogical aims are aligned to a given learning situation. One challenge in detailing effective uses of 3-D virtual environments in teaching and learning contexts is that the design judgments involved are not always made explicit. We argue that the transparency of design judgments, as it relates to the use of 3-D virtual environments, are critically important. This article advances scholarship of emerging technologies by detailing the design judgments of a university instructor within a Design for Social Impact cross-disciplinary course. To address learner needs …
