The city of Baltimore is known for its beautiful harbor, distinct neighborhoods, unique museums and the renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital. Most notably, however, Baltimore is known for its delicious choices of crabs and other types of seafood. It is not Maryland’s capital, but it is Maryland’s biggest city and economic hub. The Inner Harbor, Baltimore biggest tourist attraction, is also one of America’s major import and export stations. However, it wasn’t always like this. After World War II, the city lost so much in population and business it became as financially depressed as it had been during the Great Depression. …

Adaptive reuse is employed when revitalizing an existing infrastructure while maintaining important aspects of the cultural architectural heritage and promoting sustainability. The option to turn away from older structures and build new is a large problem in cities such as Detroit. Historic preservationists are trained to observe a structure’s potential before walking away. Meanwhile interior designers obtain the skills to rejuvenate such buildings for a new use. Case studies have shown the benefits of these two professions teaming up to apply adaptive reuse on historic structures for modern purposes. Mapping Residential Segregation In Baltimore City, Alexandra S. Stein

In 1910 Baltimore became the first city in the United States to enact residential segregation ordinances. Though the ordinances were ruled unconstitutional seven years after their implementation, their effects have shaped the lived experiences and built environment of Baltimore City up to the present. The subsequent slum clearance agenda, the introduction of racially biased real estate practices through redlining, racially restrictive covenants and blockbusting, and finally the race based site selection of federal housing project locations around the city have made Baltimore a tale of two cities, one black and one white.

The goal of this thesis has been to enhance the documentation process for historic houses and gardens. The Macht House is a historic designed house and garden in the modernist style, designed by James C. Rose. The house is being documentated for the on-going James C. Rose Documentation Project. This thesis has attempted to show a new way to document and record the spatial relationship between the indoors and the outdoors through the use of scale models and digital photographs of these models.
