Planning Design Change : Focus On Ottawa, Illinois, Donna Jean Carney Sep 1988

Planning Design Change : Focus On Ottawa, Illinois, Donna Jean Carney

Theses

The subject of the study is development change as it impacts the identity of small cities. Can small city development problems be analyzed as smaller versions of big city problems, thereby requiring smaller versions of big city design and planning solutions, or do they require responses different than reduced scale of form and land use?

The specific problem context is Ottawa, Illinois, a city in which past developments and plans for future change are representative of a large class of small cities in the U.S. Many towns of this size are caught in the dilemma of decline through not changing, …

The Architecture Of Automobile And Building Design : Learning From 100 Years Of Parallel Processes, Vojislav Ristic Sep 1988

The Architecture Of Automobile And Building Design : Learning From 100 Years Of Parallel Processes, Vojislav Ristic

Theses

The industrial revolution has had a critical impact on society in general and architecture in particular. How we design, build and use buildings is different due to industrial changes in materials, processes and techniques. A key manifestation of the industrial revolution has been the automobile. Since the automobile is a more direct result of application of technique, it is helpful to examine its design to better understand the less direct influences of technique in architecture. This is especially important at a time when the role of technology in architecture is becoming both more significant and more difficult to define and …

Review And Recommendations Regarding Available Funding Sources For Moab City Development, Kuo Kwang Chang

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

On April 28, 1986 a proposal was presented to the Grand County Commission by Professors Toth and Nicholson. The proposal was an offer to assist the Moab/Grand County area in their efforts to focus on community revitalization, planning and economic development. The LAEP Field Service Program was to provide these services. Given the favorable responses of the commissioners, the city council members, and other community leaders, the "Moab Project" was established as a major long-term commitment for the Environmental Field Service Program. This study continues the "Moab project" by examining the feasibility of funding sources for the implementation of plan …

A New Awakening: An New Baptist Church For Liberty, North Carolina, James D. Dawkins May 1988

A New Awakening: An New Baptist Church For Liberty, North Carolina, James D. Dawkins

All Theses

Baptist church architecture in the United States today is losing its uniqueness. Baptist history and heritage have lost their architectural expression. Church architecture in general has become increasingly non-denominational, responding to all faiths, and sadly Baptists have yielded to this trend. There is a pressing need to re-discover those qualities and characteristics unique to Baptists and to determine how they can influence and strengthen Baptist church architecture. Research into the nature of religion and its theoretical practical, and sociological impact on religious man and his places of worship will serve as a foundation for more detailed investigations into church architecture. …

A Sensory Garden For The Dallas Arboretum, Betty Bornefeld Presnall May 1988

A Sensory Garden For The Dallas Arboretum, Betty Bornefeld Presnall

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses

Design is most often carried out as an aesthetic exercise in visual affect and spatial treatment. If more stimulation of other human senses (orienting, auditory, smell / taste, visual, and haptic) were to occur in a place, perhaps the place would become more meaningful and memorable. In an effort to address this hypothesis, a Sensory Garden was designed, and hopefully will be implemented. As far as can be determined no other gardens in the United States exist which were designed explicitly to stimulate all the senses. There is a Fragrance Garden at the Strybing Arboretum at Golden Gate Park in …

The Influence Of Work Station Architecture On Work Perceptions And Work Behavior, Connie L. True Jan 1988

The Influence Of Work Station Architecture On Work Perceptions And Work Behavior, Connie L. True

Dissertations and Theses

A field study was conducted to find whether open office architecture is related to employees' perceptions of their jobs and their work groups, and to their behavior in and around their work stations. Fifty-two employees in the administrative division of a large manufacturing operation volunteered to participate by answering a questionnaire and allowing their work stations to be analyzed for levels of visual access and visual exposure, the two independent variables. Access and exposure, at first theorized to be independent and interacting functions, were found to be too highly correlated in this open off ice setting to test as originally …

County-Level Land Use Planning Policies And Regulations Impacting The Pattern Of Settlement In Utah County, Utah, Erik A. Johnson Jan 1988

County-Level Land Use Planning Policies And Regulations Impacting The Pattern Of Settlement In Utah County, Utah, Erik A. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Utah County has the second largest county population in the State of Utah and ranks 16th out of 29 in total land area. Over 90% of the County's quarter of a million residents live in the area known as Utah Valley, a relatively narrow strip of land situated between the Wasatch Mountains and Utah Lake. In addition to a large population, most of which was realized during the 1970s, Utah Valley also contains the bulk of the County's important agricultural land. Not surprisingly, the expanding population in Utah Valley has created competition between agricultural and urban uses for limited land …
