Mature Industrial Communities: The Realities Of Reindustrialization, John R. Mullin, Jeanne H. Armstrong
Mature Industrial Communities: The Realities Of Reindustrialization, John R. Mullin, Jeanne H. Armstrong
Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series
This article analyzes the reindustrialization problems facing mature-industry communities in Massachusetts. The findings are based upon our planning consulting work and research projects involving forty cities and towns. The range of these communities includes those which have recovered, are on their way to recovery, and are stable; those which are declining; and those whose status is indeterminate. A variety of factors are reviewed, including unionization; work-force characteristics; the relationship between small and large plants; the characteristics of local companies; location; financing; the availability of land; and the role of local planning. Finally, we present recommendations concerning local action and possible …

Conserving Nantucket, Steve Sheppard
Conserving Nantucket, Steve Sheppard
Bridgewater Review
The pristine qualities that make Nantucket a distinct place, and somewhere “far away,” both geographically and philosophically, also make it a refuge, an attractive haven and resort with less traffic, pollution and people than the mainland thirty miles away. Nantucket’s popularity is beginning to catch up with her. No longer just a summer place, Nantucket is now an active year-round community, with a tourist season that stretches from late April until well past Columbus Day. The most visible manifestation of Nantucket’s increased popularity is a building boom that is fast chewing up the island's open spaces and threatening its rural …

Design Guidelines For Montessori Schools, Raquel De Jesus
Center for Architecture and Urban Planning Research Books
The purpose of this thesis is to provide architects, designers, and teachers with design guidelines they must be aware of when designing for the child's environment necessary to enhance the Montessori method of teaching. This thesis is based on three types of information gathering: 1) the reading and analyzing of books written by Montessori and her followers, 2) interviews and inventories done in six Montessori schools, and 3) existing environment-behavior criteria for early child care environments. The results of this research is analyzed and design guidelines for Montessori schools proposed.
