Towards Principles For The Control Of Squatter Settlements In Bangkok, Thailand, Nirmal Brito Mutunayagam Jan 1974

Towards Principles For The Control Of Squatter Settlements In Bangkok, Thailand, Nirmal Brito Mutunayagam

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

The squatter problem is one of complexity and diversity, and lasting solutions to the problem have been elusive, despite the numerous techniques and approaches that have been tried out. This is primarily because the squatter problem has. not been comprehensively understood or defined.

The objective of this study is therefore to find a comprehensive definition of the squatter problem, with specific reference to Bangkok, in Thailand, and to recommend workable principles as a basis for their control and progressive elimination.

Proper reorganization of squatter control mechanisms can contribute to the orderly spatial growth in the city; and will promote the …

The Making Of The Early Bryn Mawr Campus (Parts I-Ii), Michelle Osborn Jan 1974

The Making Of The Early Bryn Mawr Campus (Parts I-Ii), Michelle Osborn

Architecture, Grounds, and History

(Part I) Bryn Mawr College is unique in having been the only campus independently planned by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, two pioneering geniuses of 19th century landscape design. Bryn Mawr was also the last campus in the country whose plan was supervised by Olmsted, semi-retired at the time of his visit to the College in 1895. New interest in the campus buildings and grounds - manifest in the College's Greening Committee and in the student-led committee on historic preservation has been further spurred by the acquisition this fall of the eleven and one-half acre site of the former …

An Approach To Open Building Systems Building Product Information Retrieval, Josh Gurlitz Jan 1974

An Approach To Open Building Systems Building Product Information Retrieval, Josh Gurlitz

Architecture Master Theses

The efficient utilization of information about marketed building products is a requisite for open building systems. There exist, however, few rationalized methods of product information transfer. The methods available to most practitioners do not afford a large range of performance information with a high degree of access are presently beyond the economic reach of most practitioners.

The method proposed here utilizes an intermediate technological vehicle which allows efficient accessibility coupled with a cost factor which may enable its use by many practicing architects. This system is based upon the categorization of performance criteria and the subsequent selection of building products …

Urban Renewal In Syracuse: The Near East Side, Lester Fredrick Volker Ii Jan 1974

Urban Renewal In Syracuse: The Near East Side, Lester Fredrick Volker Ii

Architecture Master Theses

Syracuse has not escaped the problem of slums. Like and other city it is blighted, decayed areas which are encroaching upon sound neighborhoods. Many times this problem has gone unchecked mainly because no one has known how to handle it. This is not to say that people have not tried. Slums certainly are not something new-- ever since cities began there have been poorer, more deteriorating section compared with other parts of the city. From the start of cities until today attempts have been made to arrest the spread of this blight. Many times these attempts have failed because the …

The Downtown Planning Process: An Analysis Of The Albuquerque Experience, David Walter Klein Jan 1974

The Downtown Planning Process: An Analysis Of The Albuquerque Experience, David Walter Klein

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The thesis began with the question: What process is involved in the shaping of downtown Albuquerque? Consequently, an inductive pattern of research was used in gathering information. For the most part, this information came from a number of Albuquerque City Planning Reports and studies, Urban Renewal Reports, personal interviews, and field inspection.

The findings indicate that the downtown has been in a continuous state of change throughout its history of development. These changes have taken place in an incremental and continuous manner being modified and altered by trends and influences of the time. An area in change such as this …

Evaluating The Membrane Fecal Coliform Test By Using Escherichia Coli As The Indicator Organism, James B. Hufham Jan 1974

Evaluating The Membrane Fecal Coliform Test By Using Escherichia Coli As The Indicator Organism, James B. Hufham

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The fecal coliform membrane filter method (MFC) currently used in water pollution analysis was evaluated by using two strains of E. coli, a known fecal coliform, as th indicator organism. A large relative error in the results obtained with this method was found to be dependent upon the brand of membrane filter employed, the medium, and the temperature of incubation. MFC densities varied between 10 and 60% of the densities determined by means of total bacteria counts and total coliform counts performed at 35°C. Due to the large relative error encountered, the MFC method cannot be recommended as an analytical …

Challenge For Change: Institute Of Urban Studies Progress Summary 1969-1973, Edward S. Overman, Sherman Wyman, David Tees, Paul Geisel, Lawrence Schkade, Delbert Taebel, James Cornehls, Institute Of Urban Studies

Institute of Urban Studies Publications

The Institute of Urban Studies has in its first five years mounted a broad array of educational, research and service responses to the problems of communities in both metropolitan and rural areas. These initial efforts would not have been possible without the imagination and diligence of those who served with our initial research and service units, the urban affairs faculty, and more recently, our criminal justice faculty. What remains is the challenge of furthering the capability of our existing efforts and building in both the outreach and academic areas to respond to new needs in Texas communities.

The Conceptual Determinants Of Two Archetypal City Forms, Nicholas Patricios Dec 1973

The Conceptual Determinants Of Two Archetypal City Forms, Nicholas Patricios

Nicholas Patricios

The two urban spatial forms analyzed from a cosmological point of view are the circular and the orthogonal. The circular symbolism of the Near Eastern cities is considered first followed by the Plato's theoretical city of Atlantis and then the ideal cities of the Renaissance architects. Circular cities of the 19th century, those of the Utopian Socialists, had in contrast an ideological basis. In addition to the practical basis for the orthogonal layout conceptual influences are evident in the grid cities of the ancient Greeks, in the Spanish Laws of the Indies, and those cities designed later to express the …
