Procedural City Generation With Combined Architectures For Real-Time Visualization, Griffin Poyck May 2023

Procedural City Generation With Combined Architectures For Real-Time Visualization, Griffin Poyck

All Theses

The work and research of this paper sought to build upon traditional city generation and simulation in creating a tool that both realistically simulates cities and their prominent features and also creates aesthetic and artistically rich cities using assets that combine several contemporary or near contemporary architectural styles. The major city features simulated are the surrounding terrain, road networks, individual buildings, and building placement. The tools used to both create and integrate these features were created in Houdini with Unreal Engine 5 as the intended final destination. This research was influenced by the city, town, and road networking of Ghost …

Building Information Modeling (Bim) And Building Energy Modeling (Bem): Assessment Of Bim-Bem Workflows And Energy Simulation Tools, Mahsa Farid Mohajer Oct 2022

Building Information Modeling (Bim) And Building Energy Modeling (Bem): Assessment Of Bim-Bem Workflows And Energy Simulation Tools, Mahsa Farid Mohajer

Doctoral Dissertations

Interoperability and Integration of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Building Energy Modeling (BEM) tools are major challenges for the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. The goals of this dissertation were to (i) investigate various BEM tools to evaluate their workflow and integration with BIM and (ii) assess BEM tools’ accuracy in predicting/simulating whole building energy performance from a broader lens to a more specific one (i.e., EUI to end-use data, respectively). To conduct the research study, case study buildings were selected from various categories, representing different building types (i.e., academic, administrative, and recreational). The case study buildings were …

Optimal Design Of Green Roofs: Mathematical Model And Experimental Evidence, Jing Hong Aug 2018

Optimal Design Of Green Roofs: Mathematical Model And Experimental Evidence, Jing Hong

Theses and Dissertations

Green roofs ease the heat island effect and decrease stormwater runoff. Optimizing green roof design helps achieve these goals more efficiently. This dissertation proposes energy and mass models of green roofs and validates them through experimental evidence.

The energy and mass transfer models proposed in this dissertation can be programmed in any simulation tools, and benefits architects and engineers optimizing their green roof design. The mathematical models of green roofs were validated by the measured soil temperature and water content of the Golda Meir Library green roof.

Using energy and mass balance models, this research found the effects of the …

Kinesthesis: Buildings Learning From People, Will Tufts May 2017

Kinesthesis: Buildings Learning From People, Will Tufts

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Kinetic architecture has traditionally been the domain of expensive, boutique projects which require a high degree of finance and engineering. This results in systems which are difficult to construct and maintain, and prevents widespread adoption of building technologies which offer adaptive possibilities to their users over time.

Additionally, such systems predominantly either respond to simplistic environmental models, or actuation for purposes of artistic effect. Neither approach primarily addresses the needs of the user -- an approach which architects should not accept.

This thesis shows that new technologies in analysis and construction techniques can be combined to create performative works which …

Greening Greenpoint: Investigating Technology And Environment-Based Design, Adam Castelli Aug 2014

Greening Greenpoint: Investigating Technology And Environment-Based Design, Adam Castelli

Masters Theses

This thesis investigates architectural design with a focus on technology and parametric, or computational, design strategies in relation to environmental simulation and sustainability. While numerous studies of new digital and parametric design technologies have been undertaken, few discuss their potential application or synergy with sustainable or environmentally focused design. However, there is increasing interest in bridging the perceived gap between these areas of focus in architectural design, as will be discussed in a section on recent symposia related to performance and design technologies. The research project seeks to apply insight gained from these studies to a design project to be …

Methodology To Convert A Transportation Planning Origin-Destination Matrix Into A Microscopic Traffic Simulation Origin-Destination Matrix, Jose Osiris Vidana-Bencomo Jan 2011

Methodology To Convert A Transportation Planning Origin-Destination Matrix Into A Microscopic Traffic Simulation Origin-Destination Matrix, Jose Osiris Vidana-Bencomo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Microscopic traffic simulation (MTS) is a cost-effective approach for the evaluation of traffic conditions in urban highways networks. In MTS models, traffic demand that is entered into the network is specified by one or several Origin-Destination (O-D) matrices. A major challenge in the application of MTS for large urban networks is the specification of the O-D matrices. This dissertation proposes a methodology that may be used to transform a O-D matrix from a transportation planning model (which is based on Traffic Analysis Zone, or TAZ, and is readily available) into a O-D matrix for a MTS model (which is traffic …
