School of Architecture - Theses
The intention of this thesis investigation is to explore, through architectural form, the ideals of architectural assemblage. There will be an attempt at achieving an architecture that is in constant dialogue with the complex for which it was created. The theme is ultimately derived from the environment in which it is to be utilized, and develops its form and language out of the context. The architectural assemblage will be an attempt to find a dialogue with tradition; with historically formed values of campus planning and the enhancement of that architectural form in order to achieve a uniform whole.

River View (Fairfax), C. 1845-1856, White Pine, Tennessee: An Historical Analysis, Shannon Tew
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to produce a thorough documentation of Fairfax, a National Register property, and to organize rehabilitation recommendations supportive of the home's social and architectural history. Specifically, the study included three phases of research:
-- accumulating the history of Fairfax' original construction and ownership,
-- determining and establishing the style of the home through design and construction analysis,
-- proposing an adaptive use for the home and enumerating economic and design recommendations sensitive to its style and history.
The first two phases of research were achieved primarily through traditional methods of historic research which included the …
Toward A Model Of Instruction For Architecture Design Studio, Garry Allen Perryman
Toward A Model Of Instruction For Architecture Design Studio, Garry Allen Perryman
Theses
This inquiry addresses some fundamental issues raised in a debate over the effectiveness of architecture studio instruction. It argues that as currently structured the studio's potential effectiveness is often unrealized, because of the paucity of standardized educational resources and instructor's lack of training in educational theories of instruction. This has resulted in instructional planning that is seldom structured on educational theory or research. It is also argued that in order to maximize it's effectiveness, beginning studio instruction must be premised upon a theory of instruction which includes specifying explicit instructional goals and objectives and that this would create a more …
Spire And Tower: The History, Architecture And Art Of Two Norfolk, Virginia Churches, Judith L. Smith
Spire And Tower: The History, Architecture And Art Of Two Norfolk, Virginia Churches, Judith L. Smith
Institute for the Humanities Theses
While St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and Epworth Methodist Episcopal Church are dissimilar in origin, religious practices, and architectural style, when taken together, their periods of construction in their respective revival styles span and define an important era in Norfolk, Virginia's urban history.
Original research in the sparse records of several Catholic parishes identifies the previously known name of the architect of St. Mary's church. The study also offers additional information on that church's stained glass window.
The author presents the heretofore scattered history of Epworth Church in chronological order. The study develops new information concerning …
Computerize Data Information For Architecture Design, Syau-Yi Yu
Computerize Data Information For Architecture Design, Syau-Yi Yu
Theses
Computer-aided architectural design is technically and commercially feasible yet experience in the architectural profession to date is paradoxical. Many who apply computers to architecture appear satisfied but the tangible benefits are seldom obvious and even where computers are used in firms it is not done to the fullest potential. Contents of this thesis are an attempt to help architecture better utilize the advantages of computer applications. To do this it is important to examine two question: what is design and what is the computer? They are similar yet distinct. Architectural design is a special kind of problem solving process; an information …
First Impression : The Study Of Entry In Architecture, Siriwan Polpuech
First Impression : The Study Of Entry In Architecture, Siriwan Polpuech
Theses
Entrance as an element of architecture has had an important role in the design process from the very beginning of the architecture. Its role varies according to culture and the belief of people. The characteristics of entrances are as diversified as are architectural style and historic periods.
Architectural styles continue to change. New forms and technologies add to the growth of styles. All these contribute to the eclectic of design ideas. The specifics of an entrance can arise from, be complementary to or in contradiction of a style. They always serve as a mediator between interior and exterior spaces. The …
Towards A Theory Of Planning Aesthetics : Application To University Commons, Newark, Kathy M. Gonzalez
Towards A Theory Of Planning Aesthetics : Application To University Commons, Newark, Kathy M. Gonzalez
Theses
A theory of planning aesthetics will be developed and discussed in relation to a portion of the university area of Newark consisting of N.J.I.T., Rutgers, Essex County College, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The site is just east of the campuses and contains the Newark Museum and the Newark Library.
The aesthetics of order will be covered at a community scale (the urban context) which will then be detailed as a study of the fractile portion of that entity (the building entity) relative to open spaces which give both entities character. Important in this work is three-dimensional …
An Assessment Of Thematic Mapper Satellite Data For Classifying Conifer Types In Northern Utah, Madeline R. Mazurski
An Assessment Of Thematic Mapper Satellite Data For Classifying Conifer Types In Northern Utah, Madeline R. Mazurski
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Land-cover identification and mapping are an integral part of natural resource planning and management. Satellite imagery provides a way to obtain land cover information, particularly for large tracts of land such as those administered by federal and state agencies.
This study assesses the usefulness of the Brightness/Greenness Transformation of Landsat Thematic Mapper data for differentiating conifer forest types in northern Utah. Satellite data for the Logan Ranger District of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest were classified into 27 vegetation classes. Of these, nine were determined to be conifer classes and were used in subsequent analyses. Ten sites of each conifer class …
A Border Crossing Station, Brownsville, Texas, Steven Quevedo
A Border Crossing Station, Brownsville, Texas, Steven Quevedo
School of Architecture Theses
The increasing influx of Latin Americans into the Southwest United States as a result of social, political and economic upheaval in their homelands is a growing concern for the state of Texas. A new immigration station is proposed for the Texas - Mexico border which would be essential to the journey of the international migrant. Serving simultaneously both as an administrative and educational facility, this place of entry into the United States would serve to enhance the immigrant's arrival and adaptation to their new world. The complex would represent the freedoms provided by the Constitution, serving symbolically as a haven …
