A Case Study In The Design Of Emergency Rooms, Ethel Z. Kolodner Dec 1978

A Case Study In The Design Of Emergency Rooms, Ethel Z. Kolodner

Architecture and Planning ETDs

An analysis of visits to emergency rooms reveals that the patient load responds to unpredictable variables which exert a profound influence on growth and role and may preclude reliable projections of future space needs. In addition, emergent, urgent and non-urgent patient loads exhibit differential growth rates. An analysis of current design models reveals that they are not designed to react easily through expansion or remodeling to changes in patient census and/or types of patients treated and role in health care delivery. A tripartite conceptual design model is developed that is responsive to these conditions. Important differences in patient and staff …

The Kimo Theatre: A Program For Re-Use, William G. Osofsky Dec 1978

The Kimo Theatre: A Program For Re-Use, William G. Osofsky

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The issue of adaptive reuse for older structures is one that is the forefront of the architectural profession today. In many cases public and private developers are realizing that the rehabilitation of disused and abandoned buildings is more economically viable than the construction of similar new facilities. Nowhere has this been more prominently demonstrated than in the field of the performing arts facility. Historically, this type of building has one of the highest per square foot costs of any building type. The growing awareness of the arts and their subsequent sponsorship by the government had created a demand for facilities …

Computers In Planning: A Knoxville Example, Lynn E. Miller

Masters Theses

The availability of computers at the local level of government has been steadily increasing. With this increase, planners are in a unique position to utilize computer capabilities to assist in the full range of planning activities. The problem to date seems to be one of a lack of understanding as to what computer applications are being used and how these applications can be useful to planners. This research is, therefore, oriented towards presenting an overview of computer applications used in planning agencies. Attempts are made to show how these applications are used and how they relate to planning needs.

Consolidated Government, Urban Services Policy And Urban Development: A Case Study Of Metropolitan Nashville-Davidson County, Edward Howard Cole

Urban planners continue to explore various ways of influencing the type, rate, location, quality and timing of urban development. The need for such influence is evidenced by the compounding of urban environmentmental and energy concerns with local government fiscal difficulties. The Architect As A Professional And His Relation To Construction, John Arthur Coons Jul 1978

The Architect As A Professional And His Relation To Construction, John Arthur Coons

Architecture and Planning ETDs

An examination of the nature of professionalism serves as a model against which the emergence of architecture as a profession can be compared. In what manner and for what reasons the architect eventually distinguished himself from the construction process is examined historically. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of the profession in England as an antecedent for similar developments in the United States. The professionalization of architecture prompted a continuous interaction of ethics and law with recent years witnessing a serious questioning of professional ethics by society through the tool of law. It is shown that ethical codes must …

Multifamily Highrise Buildings In Kuwait, Waleed Jelal Babaa

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Kuwait, a small Arab country with arid land, went through a considerable amount of development in the last four decades. The discovery of oil and its commercial exploitation attracted immigrants to the country and created paramount changes in both social life and the urbanization of the country.

The high rate of increase in population continued in spite of harsh geographical, topographical, ecological, and climatic factors. These factors with their distinctive characteristics are the determinants of the urban architectural design of the country. Such determinants are harsh and very difficult to deal with. Planners, architects, engineers, and builders had little experience …

A greenhouse study was conducted to compare bentgrass (Agrostis sp.) responses and disease incidence, media leachate volumes, pH of leachates, and temperatures of media. Samples were tested in a laboratory to determine particle size distribution, organic matter, porosity, bulk density, percolation rate, and cation exchange capacity.

The indigenous organic materials of pine bark, oak sawdust, sewage sludge, cotton chop, and soybean chop compared …
