Belo Horizonte, Portal To The Future: A Vision For Brazil, Daniel J. Brassil, Ardeshir Anjomani May 2016

Belo Horizonte, Portal To The Future: A Vision For Brazil, Daniel J. Brassil, Ardeshir Anjomani

Planning Masters Professional Reports

A massive improvement of Belo Horizonte's transportation infrastructure would not only improve the quality of life of the residents of this important metropolitan area, it would positively change the course of Brazil and Iberian America's future by creating a new economic engine, enabling business and enterprise while providing opportunities and prosperity to millions. Belo Horizonte - much like the Dallas - Fort Worth metropolitan area in the Unites States and the Madrid metropolitan area in Spain - have many similarities. All three metropolitan areas are major, inland centers without navigable waterways and with populations of over 5 million inhabitants. Using …

Prediction Of The Root Anchorage Of Native Young Plants Using Bayesian Inference, Ryan Wai Man Yan, Lin Zhang, Flora T. Y. Leung, Ka-Veng Yuen Jan 2016

Prediction Of The Root Anchorage Of Native Young Plants Using Bayesian Inference, Ryan Wai Man Yan, Lin Zhang, Flora T. Y. Leung, Ka-Veng Yuen

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

The maximum vertical uproot resistance (Pmax) of a plant can be used to indicate its stability. Attempts were made to predict the Pmax of a plant empirically from some of its size parameters. In practice, an infinite number of empirical models with different complexities can be formulated. This study presents a Bayesian model class selection method to evaluate the plausibility of each empirical model among a list of model candidates. The models were ranked to identify the most plausible one. A database of vertical uproot resistance of four shrubs and trees native to Hong Kong was first compiled by performing …

Measuring The Performance Of Property Management Companies In Highriseflats, Daniel Chi Wing Ho, Ervi Liusman Jan 2016

Measuring The Performance Of Property Management Companies In Highriseflats, Daniel Chi Wing Ho, Ervi Liusman

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Purpose: The complex nature of multi-ownership, multi-storey buildings requires the services of property management companies (PMCs). Naturally, homeowners favor PMCs with good performance. Yet, their performances vary. The purpose of this paper is to measure the performance of PMCs in managing high-rise flats using the logic model as the contextual framework with its indicators adapted from the building quality index (BQI) scheme.

Design/Methodology/Approach: For this pilot study, the research was based on visual inspection and interviews with building management staff for the information concerning the output and outcome indicators. The authors also tested the relationship between outcomes and outputs and …

Tight Budget Constraints And The Absence Of Strategic Planning – An Exploratory Analysis Of Fm Service Outsourcing, Cynthia Huiying Hou, Daniel Chi Wing Ho, Jacky C.H. Chung, Kelwin K.W. Wong Jan 2016

Tight Budget Constraints And The Absence Of Strategic Planning – An Exploratory Analysis Of Fm Service Outsourcing, Cynthia Huiying Hou, Daniel Chi Wing Ho, Jacky C.H. Chung, Kelwin K.W. Wong

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Purpose: This paper aims to identify the factors that affect facilities management (FM) service outsourcing.

Design/Methodolgoy/Approach: Five focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted for this study. A total of 25 professional FM managers were invited to participate in the FGDs. The qualitative data collected from the FGDs were analysed with the coding method.

Findings: FM managers commonly regard that tight budget constraints and the absence of strategic planning are two important factors that affect FM service outsourcing. Tight budget constraints reflect that clients control their service providers by constraining budgets, which creates a series of inefficiencies in the outsourcing process …

Analysis Of The Construction Waste Management Performance In Hongkong: The Public And Private Sectors Compared Using Big Data, Weisheng Lu, Xi Chen, Daniel Chi Wing Ho, Hongdi Wang Jan 2016

Analysis Of The Construction Waste Management Performance In Hongkong: The Public And Private Sectors Compared Using Big Data, Weisheng Lu, Xi Chen, Daniel Chi Wing Ho, Hongdi Wang

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

There is an ongoing debate concerning the disparity between the public and private sectors in relation to construction waste management (CWM) performance: some argue that CWM performance between the two sectors should have no difference since they are under the governance of the same set of CWM related regulations, while others argue that public sector clients should perform better as they are subject to greater social scrutiny. Previous studies comparing CWM performance have suffered from insufficient quality data, leaving the debate on the CWM performance disparity largely inconclusive. Informed by the Coase Invariant Theorem, this research empirically compares CWM performance …

Traveling Via Rome Through The Stereoscope: Reality, Memory, And Virtual Travel., Douglas Mark Klahr Jan 2016

Traveling Via Rome Through The Stereoscope: Reality, Memory, And Virtual Travel., Douglas Mark Klahr

School of Architecture Faculty Publications

Underwood and Underwood's, Rome through the Stereoscope, of 1902 was a landmark in stereoscopic photography publishing, both as an intense, visually immersive experience and as a cognitively demanding exercise. The set consisted of a guidebook, forty-six stereographs, and five maps whose notations enabled the reader/viewer to precisely replicate the location and orientation of the photographer at each site. Combined with the extensive narrative within the guidebook, the maps and images guided its users through the city via forty-six sites, whether as an example of armchair travel or an actual travel companion. The user's experience is examined and analyzed within the …
