The Company: Carnival Urbanism For Shrinking Cities, Brandon Peterson Apr 2011

The Company: Carnival Urbanism For Shrinking Cities, Brandon Peterson

Architecture Master Theses

THE COMPANY is a framework of urban intervention that seeks to stabilize shrinking neighborhoods through a large number of small-scale, temporary occupations of vacated buildings. Its process of quickly phasing in architecture and program over time, through testing and experimentation, is preferable to the slow, top-down planning of large-scale, more permanent initiatives. Its identity is that of spectacle and pleasure. Its architects are designers, developers, planners, sponsors, eventholders and actors.

The historic neighborhood of Brush Park in Detroit, Michigan is the first testing ground for THE COMPANY’s interventions. Its forty-four abandoned buildings will be adapted from post-industrial leftovers into catalytic …

Re: Integrated Identity: The Spatially Defined Ground Place In Social Housing, Katie Lynn Carroll Apr 2011

Re: Integrated Identity: The Spatially Defined Ground Place In Social Housing, Katie Lynn Carroll

Architecture Master Theses

"In this thesis project I propose that a re-integrated identity for social housing projects can evolve through a spatially defined and sequenced ground plane that is activated through a program response to current demographics within an existing community. This definition and re-organization of the ground plane occurs from an analysis of the surrounding community fabric and the existing community identity and demographics."

Untitled, Darren Poon

Architecture Master Theses

"My objective is to explore the potential of generative design processes driven by user-derived parameters established through computational protocols, algorithms, and simulations resulting in a process embodying ecologies of feedback and performances. Inherent in the designed process is the establishment of feedback, through each cycle of simulation, evaluation, and modification of the geometry.

This thesis project demonstrates a version of these processes specifically examining the performance driven building typology of the massive server farm. Specifically, its implicit correlations with fluid dynamic simulation and its biases toward an optimization of heat dissipation and plan layout. This project is situated between a …

Master Of Architecture Ii - Thesis (Baltimore's Inner Harbor), Federico G. Beulcke Oct 1991

Master Of Architecture Ii - Thesis (Baltimore's Inner Harbor), Federico G. Beulcke

Architecture Master Theses

This project is interested in the chance to develop a project for a "Museum of the Bay" in Baltimore's Inner Harbor area. The building would contain a somewhat historical retrospective on what the Chesapeake Bay meant for the population living on its coast, focusing in particular on the docks area and its potential development.

The museum itself and the facilities that will naturally be tied to it will be generated by the use of some of the pre-existing structures, connected to a circulation system, and able to work as a starting point for the total recuperation of the area.

Mutual Influence Between The United States Of America And Europe In The Field Of Modern Housing, Erhard Schütz May 1990

Mutual Influence Between The United States Of America And Europe In The Field Of Modern Housing, Erhard Schütz

Architecture Master Theses

This study represents a partial summary of the research that was conducted since 1985, beginning with a Fulbright Scholarship originally intended to investigate the American “roots” of modern housing and the work of architects of lesser prominence than the acknowledged “masters” such as Ferdinand Kramer, who had been a housing specialist of the “New Frankfurt” and who later came to the United States as a refugee. In the course of gathering material and discussing the findings, the field of investigation has widened, now addressing the development of modern housing in Europe, particularly in Germany, and in the United States of …

North Taiwan: Fishing Village Housing Redevelopment, Li Tiene Jan 1980

North Taiwan: Fishing Village Housing Redevelopment, Li Tiene

Architecture Master Theses

The unique architectural development of Ba-Dow-Tsu fishing village has been in my mind ever since the time, many years ago, when i first made it a habit of wandering with no fixed objective in mind through old town. Twenty years ago, one could enjoy many thoroughfares that still had about there the air or early Taiwan village a quiet Chinese peace created, in part, by the low horizontal lines of the central courtyard, terraced- houses. Those streets are now slums and ruins that can be enjoyed only in memory.

In the march of progress, we have ruthlessly destroyed all our …

The Spatial Pattern Of Upper Income Class Residential Location In Rio De Janerio, Brazil, Regina Bienenstein Zoninsein Oct 1977

The Spatial Pattern Of Upper Income Class Residential Location In Rio De Janerio, Brazil, Regina Bienenstein Zoninsein

Architecture Master Theses

This study is about the residential location of the upper-income class in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It focuses on the spatial pattern of this location and its relationship with the characteristics of the natural environment and the availability of public services and facilities.

It shows that Rio de Janeiro's spatial structure up to the nineteenth century was similar to the Latin American Colonial Model: the city developed around the main plaza which concentrated the elite class.

During the nineteenth century, the first elite settlements were formed outside the city center in a spatial pattern which approximated to Hoyt's Sector Model: …

Architecture Master Theses

This study focuses on the problems of urban housing, with special emphasis on low to middle income, high density - low rise solutions. The findings of the research of this thesis are incorporated into a design solution of a low rise - high density development in La Puntilla sector of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

An Approach To Participation In Housing, Georg Wolfgang Reinberg Jan 1977

An Approach To Participation In Housing, Georg Wolfgang Reinberg

Architecture Master Theses

In our increasingly complex society a growing centralism tends to bring more and more decisions out of the control of the user. This is too often not to the advantage of the citizens whose desires are bypassed. This results in breakdowns in the processing involved in planning and an increasing demand for participatory democracy.

In this thesis a design process for housing is proposed which allows the users to participate and to deal with the existing power structure, in so far as it puts constraints on their homes. this design process is then translated into a game which could serve …

The Dynamics Of Micro-Location: The Potentials Of Airspace In Urban Design, Ira A. Chilton Jan 1977

The Dynamics Of Micro-Location: The Potentials Of Airspace In Urban Design, Ira A. Chilton

Architecture Master Theses

This thesis is an investigation into the analeptic potentials of airspace utilization in urban areas. The study emphasizes airspace utilization as a dynamic locational catalyst for urban revitalization, and has two fundamental purposes. The first is to attempt to clarify the relevance of using airspace as a tool for pursuing efficient and effective use of the limited and valuable supply of central city land. And the second is to pursue a catalytic process for obtaining socioeconomic goals through the multiple use of transportation rights-of-way. In the final phase, these concepts will be briefly elaborated in a case study applied to …

Indigenous African Systems As A Basis For Rational Housing: A Proposal, Ibrahim N'Jai Yilla Feb 1976

Indigenous African Systems As A Basis For Rational Housing: A Proposal, Ibrahim N'Jai Yilla

Architecture Master Theses

In this report I undertake a study of the criteria involved in designing a suitable housing system for tropical Africa with particular emphasis on my native country Sierra Leone. I focus attention particularly upon the indigenous built system, the country's environment, resources and way of life enjoyed by its people. I feel a study of this nature would give me invaluable insight into the problems facing developing African countries in providing adequate housing.

The scope of this research is to define and propose a housing system, based on a good understanding of the indigenous system, which offers a multiplicity of …

A Leprosy Research Center In India, Vinoobhai Baboobhai Amin Oct 1974

A Leprosy Research Center In India, Vinoobhai Baboobhai Amin

Architecture Master Theses

With an estimated number of about 2.2 million cases in India, leprosy is one of our (Indian) important public health problems. With great regret, we have to accept the fact that the present knowledge of leprosy by our people is very, very meager.

In fact, the facilities for leprosy treatment and research provided by the Government of India are very limited. Moreover, few Indian architects have contributed their services towards the problem of designing an adequate leprosy campus.

I have prepared this thesis in the hope that it will contribute some pragmatic design concepts of rehabilitation programs for lepers, concerning …

Proposed Redevelopment: Solvay Process Wastebeds, Michael Joseph Starego May 1974

Proposed Redevelopment: Solvay Process Wastebeds, Michael Joseph Starego

Architecture Master Theses

The planned development of the Solvay Process Wastebeds will be a classic case of environmental planning. The need for more planned open spaces becomes more evident and necessary as the population of Syracuse spreads and increases. The creation of the Solvay "Open Space" can draw on the network of existing open spaces within the region and the gradual reclamation of Onondaga Lake.

The knowledge we now have, compared with the early years of the wastebeds, is considerable and should enable a better plan to be made incorporating them into the life of the community. There are of course, no general …

The Impact Of Building Code Regulation On The Manufactured Housing And Mobile Home Industries, Robert Ernest Johnson May 1974

The Impact Of Building Code Regulation On The Manufactured Housing And Mobile Home Industries, Robert Ernest Johnson

Architecture Master Theses

Efforts/to understand the relationship of the built environment to the context in which it is placed are constantly expanding into new areas. This is, of course, due to the fact that architecture is concerned with the "total system" and thus deals directly with a wide range of disciplines.

This study centers on one aspect of the larger problem. It is concerned first with the organization of the construction industry and the effect: this organization has had on the development of industrialized housing. Secondly, the study focuses on a specific aspect of the construction industry that has significantly affected the growth …

The Neighborhood As A Focus For Development, Bob Neil Scher May 1974

The Neighborhood As A Focus For Development, Bob Neil Scher

Architecture Master Theses

One of the purposes of urban design is an understanding, a knowledge of the urban environment. The purpose of this investigation, a thesis is urban design, was to discover strong, recurrent patterns within the city relevant to urban design as a discipline. It was found that such patterns did exist, in the form of population-migration patterns.

A theory of urban development/redevelopment was constructed as an enhancement of the already existent social pattern, in an attempt to enrich the urban experience within the structure of an average large metropolitan agglomeration.

Restoration Versus Demolition: Case History Of Amsterdam, New York, Raymond Joseph William Andrews May 1974

Restoration Versus Demolition: Case History Of Amsterdam, New York, Raymond Joseph William Andrews

Architecture Master Theses

The purpose of this study is to disclose why Amsterdam, New York -- like thousands of other cities in the United States -- has shunned restoration. It is hoped these findings will prove the worth of the ordinary old buildings and that the revitalization of the urban fabric does not follow from demolition and newness.

A Guideline For Master Plans In Cities In The Mexican Republic, Carlos Eduardo Inda Hernandez Apr 1974

A Guideline For Master Plans In Cities In The Mexican Republic, Carlos Eduardo Inda Hernandez

Architecture Master Theses

The purpose of my thesis is to study a guideline for Planning Agencies, using as their main tool the master plan and always with the idea that the planner and the political official would be working together. It will be useful to study the planning tools in the U.S., and the organization of planning in European countries and decide what could be used and what not, to study the variations to suit the Mexican scene and the different Mexican cities.

An Approach To Open Building Systems Building Product Information Retrieval, Josh Gurlitz Jan 1974

An Approach To Open Building Systems Building Product Information Retrieval, Josh Gurlitz

Architecture Master Theses

The efficient utilization of information about marketed building products is a requisite for open building systems. There exist, however, few rationalized methods of product information transfer. The methods available to most practitioners do not afford a large range of performance information with a high degree of access are presently beyond the economic reach of most practitioners.

The method proposed here utilizes an intermediate technological vehicle which allows efficient accessibility coupled with a cost factor which may enable its use by many practicing architects. This system is based upon the categorization of performance criteria and the subsequent selection of building products …

Urban Renewal In Syracuse: The Near East Side, Lester Fredrick Volker Ii Jan 1974

Urban Renewal In Syracuse: The Near East Side, Lester Fredrick Volker Ii

Architecture Master Theses

Syracuse has not escaped the problem of slums. Like and other city it is blighted, decayed areas which are encroaching upon sound neighborhoods. Many times this problem has gone unchecked mainly because no one has known how to handle it. This is not to say that people have not tried. Slums certainly are not something new-- ever since cities began there have been poorer, more deteriorating section compared with other parts of the city. From the start of cities until today attempts have been made to arrest the spread of this blight. Many times these attempts have failed because the …

Mutual Aid Housing For San Juan, Philip Lawrence Manson Goldberg Jun 1970

Mutual Aid Housing For San Juan, Philip Lawrence Manson Goldberg

Architecture Master Theses

A policy program for mutual aid construction is presented. In this approach, rural families organize teams to build their dwellings and buy construction materials through new savings organizations. The chief prerequisite for mutual aid in a specific situation is that the ratio of material to labor costs be high.

Pride in home ownership, training in construction skills, and natural evolved neighborhoods prove the thesis that mutual aid is the most promising solution for housing the poor in developing societies. Financial burden on the public is minimized, and the government can control municipal expansion by retaining land ownership.

In high density …
