Designing Work: Collaboration Versus Concentration In Open Plan Workspaces?, John Walsh

Level 3

This paper looks at the design of open-plan offices, particularly in relation to the impact of spatial design on different work-modes. Places Of Faith: Architectures For Hospitality In The Italian Sanctuaries In The Early Modern Age, Silvia Beltramo Feb 2018

Places Of Faith: Architectures For Hospitality In The Italian Sanctuaries In The Early Modern Age, Silvia Beltramo

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The strong affluence of pilgrims in monasteries and sanctuaries since the Middle Era, determined a veritable culture of hospitality, which was manifested by the building of new spaces dedicated to guest quarters. This research investigates in detail some meaningful examples amongst the main Italian sanctuaries - namely: Vicoforte and Oropa (Piedmont), Tirano (Lombardy) and Loreto (Marche) - looking at the solutions adopted to host the wayfarers: the hospitality spaces which characterised architecture dedicated to pilgrims between the Middle and the Early Modern Ages. Throughout this period of time, the continuous increase in pilgrimages implied new definitions of the space within …

Smart Growth And The Irish Land-Use Stakeholder: From Rhetoric To Reality, Dorothy Stewart Jun 2017

Smart Growth And The Irish Land-Use Stakeholder: From Rhetoric To Reality, Dorothy Stewart

The ITB Journal

In the past decade, Ireland has undergone a period of unprecedented growth culminating in the creation of a new economic society based on service provision, a move away from a traditional agricultural base. Allied to this has been an increase in economic, social and legislative inroads into Europe and beyond. This change has brought with it challenges commonly associated with unpredicted growth such as traffic congestion, urban sprawl, access to education and a perceived lack of affordable housing. One part of the solution proposes adopting the principles that underpin the concept of "Smart Growth". This paper critically evaluates the concept …

Spatial Translations And Embodied Bilingualism: Defining The Migrant's Experience From An Architectural Perspective, Caroline Rabourdin Dec 2016

Spatial Translations And Embodied Bilingualism: Defining The Migrant's Experience From An Architectural Perspective, Caroline Rabourdin

CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language

As a bilingual writer and architect, my research is practice-based and multidisciplinary. In pulling together theories and practices about Space, Language and the Body, my aim is to develop a notion of Embodied Bilingualism. If the word ‘translate’ is to move something from one place to another, as architectural historian Robin Evans explains, then one needs to understand its pure and unconditional existence as a geometrical construct in the first place in order to fully appreciate the workings of linguistic translation. In this paper, language is considered as an embodied practice, which for the bilingual migrant leads to considerations about …
