This publication is the result of one semester's design work from the Syracuse University Florence Program. Our purpose in compiling this material is two-fold; in presenting this work as an example of the design activity that occurs at the Florence Center, we intend to reveal the unique opportunity that this Program offers to students from the United States. In addition, we are using this vehicle to address the intellectual context within which our students worked during their design process. Giuseppe Vallifuoco and Sergio Petrini (Roman architects and our Visiting Critics) presented a specific bias toward the production of architecture, and …

Architecture Thesis Prep
"Based on (the) analysis, I intend to design a new library building on the Hartford site acquired by the University of Connecticut. My plans incluse a structure which will consider the scale, color, and texture of the surrounding buildings. Furthermore, this structure will have ample storage for present and future law school collections, library administrative office and student and faculty facilities. In addition, I will also take into account the fact that much of the research and location of materials in the library is conducted by a computer."

Architecture Senior Theses
"The basic premise underlying this thesis is my conviction that we have lost sight of the traditional relationship of architecture and the city. The cause of this loss is obvious when we compare cities of the past with those of the present. Urban spaces have become more and more abstract and less articulate. The prevalence of the parts over the whole has reulted in the weakening of the urban spatial structure."

The Early Work Of Joseph Lyman Silsbee, Donald Robert Pulfer
The Early Work Of Joseph Lyman Silsbee, Donald Robert Pulfer
School of Architecture - Theses
Silsbee’s name inevitably is associated with Frank Lloyd Wright and the other Prairie School architects who acquired their training in his Chicago office in the late 1880’s. Because of Silsbee’s well-known influence on mid-western architecture the focus of attention has been his mature work. Before he moved to Chicago, Silsbee practiced architecture in Syracuse, New York for a decade. Study of this early work extends our knowledge of Silsbee’s oeuvre and informs our understanding of his later architecture.
Silsbee was one of a new generation of thoroughly educated, professionally trained architects in late nineteenth century America. His High Victorian architectural …

North Taiwan: Fishing Village Housing Redevelopment, Li Tiene
Architecture Master Theses
The unique architectural development of Ba-Dow-Tsu fishing village has been in my mind ever since the time, many years ago, when i first made it a habit of wandering with no fixed objective in mind through old town. Twenty years ago, one could enjoy many thoroughfares that still had about there the air or early Taiwan village a quiet Chinese peace created, in part, by the low horizontal lines of the central courtyard, terraced- houses. Those streets are now slums and ruins that can be enjoyed only in memory.
In the march of progress, we have ruthlessly destroyed all our …

The geographical location of Syracuse, its industry and especially its location on the Erie Canal, were factors propitious for its growth and development as an industrial center within New York State.
After the Civil War, Syracuse experienced a building boom which offered unusual possibilities for the builder-architect. Although there was an increase of formal education for architects during the second half of the nineteenth century, many regional architects learned their trade in the office of an architect or of a builder-architect; the distinctions were not always finely drawn.
One of these architects was Archmedes Russell, who came to Syracuse from …

The Spatial Pattern Of Upper Income Class Residential Location In Rio De Janerio, Brazil, Regina Bienenstein Zoninsein
The Spatial Pattern Of Upper Income Class Residential Location In Rio De Janerio, Brazil, Regina Bienenstein Zoninsein
Architecture Master Theses
This study is about the residential location of the upper-income class in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It focuses on the spatial pattern of this location and its relationship with the characteristics of the natural environment and the availability of public services and facilities.
It shows that Rio de Janeiro's spatial structure up to the nineteenth century was similar to the Latin American Colonial Model: the city developed around the main plaza which concentrated the elite class.
During the nineteenth century, the first elite settlements were formed outside the city center in a spatial pattern which approximated to Hoyt's Sector Model: …
