The Effect Of Natural Light On Mental Health, Gianna Arquilla
The Effect Of Natural Light On Mental Health, Gianna Arquilla
Honors Projects
All students have experienced low motivation at one point in their academic career, but what are the factors that can affect this? Is it solely based on their personality and work ethic, or can the environment have an effect? This study discusses the effects on mental health through architecture. Can the amount of natural light in a building affect the motivation of students? Natural light is something that is often overlooked, mostly considered as a perk rather than a necessity. How can students truly feel passionate about their work sitting in a dark place? To evaluate this data, this study …

This research focuses on Miyazaki’s process and the similarities he shares with architects, both in and out of his works. By initially examining his background, the three motifs of architecture, inspiration, and sustainability are explored through works like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and more. The results of this research are to inform fans of both architecture and anime about the connection between someone who designs and builds the world, and one who designs and builds …
A Playworker’S Musings On The Perceptions And Importance Of ’Mess’ In A Play Space., Angus Ian Gorrie
A Playworker’S Musings On The Perceptions And Importance Of ’Mess’ In A Play Space., Angus Ian Gorrie
International Journal of Playwork Practice
The aesthetics of any given play environment is often subject to immense scrutiny, often at the behest of adult agendas. This paper will, from a playwork practitioner’s perspective, discuss how aspects of perceptive mess in a play space positively affect play, the physical opportunities for children, their wellbeing, sense of belonging and their ability to create a sense of order as they see it. This will be juxtaposed against the situations in which children find themselves, by adult design, that paradoxically have the opposite effect. The author has drawn heavily from aspects of playwork theory and practice in the development …

How Have Adventure Playgrounds In The United Kingdom Adapted Post-March Lockdown In 2020?, Pete King
How Have Adventure Playgrounds In The United Kingdom Adapted Post-March Lockdown In 2020?, Pete King
International Journal of Playwork Practice
Adventure playgrounds have been a feature in the United Kingdom since the 1950s. Their growth and development was underpinned by ‘thinking together’, a concept in the Communities of Practice (CoP) approach. In March 2020, the United Kingdom (UK) went into lockdown. This study aimed to find out how adventure playgrounds responded to the Covid-19 situation when they reopened in July 2020. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 18 adventure playground staff from 14 adventure playgrounds. Thematic analysis of the data constructed themes and sub-themes within four main headings: preparation for opening; reduction; targeted service and play behaviour. The results showed how …

The Impact Of Project Delivery Methods On Dispute Occurrence In Public Highway Projects, Samaneh Nasrollahi, Ghada M. Gad, Alan Atalah
Master of Technology Management Plan II Graduate Projects
The construction industry is a complex and competitive industry in which different participants with different expertise, talents, and levels of knowledge work together to achieve their objectives and complete a project. Sine different participants with different interest involve in a construction project, therefore, conflicts arise and become inevitable. Conflicts in projects will cause an adversarial environment which result to disputes. Hence, if conflicts are not well managed and resolved in a timely manner, they quickly turn into disputes, which prevent the successful completion of the construction project, in terms of cost and time, and increasing the potential for poor project …

Toledo Tomorrow: Reading Norman Bel Geddes' Vision For The Future In A Shrinking Midwestern City, Sujata Shetty, Andreas Luescher
Toledo Tomorrow: Reading Norman Bel Geddes' Vision For The Future In A Shrinking Midwestern City, Sujata Shetty, Andreas Luescher
Architecture and Environmental Design Faculty Publications
This paper examines Norman Bel Geddes’ 1945 Toledo Tomorrow plan, his only proposal for a specific city, and its stamp on the morphology of today's Toledo. The paper surveys retrospectively at the changes in the morphology of the city and critically analyzes the impact of the Toledo Tomorrow Plan. Today's Toledo, a shrinking rustbelt city, reflects Geddes' legacy of neglecting the historic core; focusing on highway infrastructure, that has since worked in tandem with the forces of decentralization and suburbanization; and the city's weak relationship with its natural features and larger region.

A fourth-year class in a pre-professional program explored the idea of a visual dialogue emerging from the investigative nature of the properties and variables of individual responses to design studio challenges. All members of a Senior Design Studio collaborated in planning, designing and producing a single poster announcing a public parade of their work. This paper describes the poster, as well as the use of alternative teaching and learning approaches which students learn to broaden their design and architectural repertoire to include more creative, collaborative, intuitive and flexible skills.
The City As Campus: Creating A Sustainable Vision For The City Of Toledo, Andreas Luescher, Sujata Shetty, Scot Macpherson
The City As Campus: Creating A Sustainable Vision For The City Of Toledo, Andreas Luescher, Sujata Shetty, Scot Macpherson
Architecture and Environmental Design Faculty Publications
Toledo, Ohio, once a thriving manufacturing center, is emblematic of cities in the U.S. industrial midwest that are reeling from the effects of precipitous economic decline. In Toledo's case, the city's population has dropped from a peak of 385,000 in 1980 to under 300,000. Against this backdrop, we are using Toledo as a case study, and by documenting a critical architectural and urban planning history of the city, we argue that the traditional model that linked architecture and capital no longer holds. In doing so, we are shedding light on the complexity of the challenges and responses City of Toledo, …

Introductory Review To The Special Issue: Shrinking Cities And Towns: Challenge And Responses, Andreas Luescher, Sujata Shetty
Architecture and Environmental Design Faculty Publications
Cities and towns facing sustained population loss are being researched and discussed more than ever before. Once the focus of a relatively small group of architects and urban designers in Europe, these cities and towns are now being studied by scholars across the world. In a range of contexts - from a large, iconic city like Detroit, to a small village in Japan (described by Thomas Feldhoff in this issue), this phenomenon is being observed in unexpected places, and far more frequently than once imagined.
A wider population is engaging in this as well, as discussions of the future of …
