Citizen Based Public Health Surveillance, Monitoring And Post-Event Assessments, Thomas Lyons Carr Iii Apr 2005

Citizen Based Public Health Surveillance, Monitoring And Post-Event Assessments, Thomas Lyons Carr Iii

Thomas Lyons (Thom) Carr III Appl.Sc., CEM

When a sudden on-set emergency or disaster affects a region or the whole country, communities and neighborhoods should plan for the possibility that emergency and other civic services will be disrupted and unavailable (District of Columbia 2003a, 2003b, 2004; Doyle 2004; Siskiyou County Public Health/NorCalBT.com 2004). The event may be severe enough that the routine public health surveillance and monitoring system will be disrupted or the system will not be able to provide data quickly enough to support state and local decisionmaking. A temporary post-disaster system should be planned for and implemented. The epidemiologist supporting the local decision makers must …

Project-Based Independent Study Capstone Course, Ronald W. Welch, Allen C. Estes

Architectural Engineering

This paper describes a unique project-based course used successful by the ABET-Accredited Civil Engineering Program at the United States Military Academy (USMA) to greatly enhance the academic program. The three general project classifications available within this senior course are service-based (i.e., USMA, the Army, local community, etc.), competition-based (i.e., steel bridge, concrete canoe, timber bridge, Big Beam), and research-based. The exceptional student work provided at little to no cost to the client has opened up a ground swell of service and research projects now constantly offered to the program coordinator by prospective clients. We believe these independent study projects are …

Reactive Architecture : Urban Recreational Center, Michael Figueredo Apr 2005

Reactive Architecture : Urban Recreational Center, Michael Figueredo

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores how architecture can be designed to react to changing conditions. In the design I address how the occupants of a building may change the exterior façade based on a change of events or on group size. This creates an architectural language on the façade for pedestrians and motorists to read those activities that are occurring.

The design project is a hybrid recreational center and plaza that is designed for the use of small groups and can be adapted for larger groups. By manipulating the ground plane I create spaces where the spectator becomes the display and the …

Hosting An International Conference On Women And Shelter: Pedagogic And Logistical Insights, Hemalata C. Dandekar, Sujata Shetty Apr 2005

Hosting An International Conference On Women And Shelter: Pedagogic And Logistical Insights, Hemalata C. Dandekar, Sujata Shetty

City and Regional Planning

The experience of hosting an international conference at the University of Michigan on the topic of shelter, women, and development provided the authors of this paper with two kinds of insights. First, there was useful substantive information which broadened our delineation of the subject area addressed. Second, we developed a heightened awareness of university and institutional administration and the logistical issues that must be attended to if faculty/student initiatives are to succeed. This paper extracts some elements of this experience in the areas of substantive inquiry, logistical arrangements, and implications for pedagogy, which may be useful to other academics considering …

Village Homes, Davis, California: A Learning Lab For Future Planners, Paul Wack

City and Regional Planning

Built in the 1970s, Village Homes is an extremely successful housing development in Davis, California, and considered a model of sustainable community design. Energy-conscious houses are organized around a system of pedestrian-friendly streets and open spaces, with community facilities, shared gardens, orchards, and vineyards, all managed by residents. Professor Paul Wack, a founder of the Sustainable Environments minor in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, has been adopting it as a case-study for his classes for several years.

Discounting Transit Passes, Cornelius K. Nuworsoo Apr 2005

Discounting Transit Passes, Cornelius K. Nuworsoo

City and Regional Planning

Public transit operators in the United States have long known that fare hikes do not increase total revenues. Although while fare reductions might boost ridership, they can also reduce total revenues and thus increase reliance on subsidies. Transit operators trying to balance their budgets need new strategies that can produce more revenue than costs. Some transit agencies have tried selling steeply discounted unlimited-ride transit passes to groups, such as students at a university or employees at a large company. Such deep-discount group-pass programs are paid for either by participants though payroll deductions or school fees, by an employer or school, …

Field City Vs. Flexibuild, Benjamin R. Brabec

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The project proposes a flexible module design for downtown Lincoln, Nebraska. It seeks to fill in urban gaps and reactivate a downtown area, dominated by wide streets, open lots, and and 2 to 3 story buildings. There is an abundance of open gray space used mainly for parking (22,600 stalls). Modular construction systems, common in exhibition and fair designs, are employed; these can be altered and arranged to accommodate changing situations. The base module is 9 x 18 feet, based on the size of a parking stall. It can be subdivided and equipped with glass, solid infill, shading, seating, boxes, …

Memorial Stadium: Expansion, Renovation, Addition, Aaron Terpening

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The Memorial Stadium project will investigate the current conditions of facilities, study existing programs with regard to renovation and modification, and establish capacities for expansion. The project necessitates knowledge of sports facilities and the specific needs of the football program. This may involve research into the need of individuals ranging from the players themselves to the coaches, and ultimately the fans as well. The result will lead to a program which provides excellent solutions to the found needs. It is assumed that these needs will include updated training, locker room, and medical facilities for the athletes. Other programs include offices …

Sustaining Culture Through Architecture : How Can Local, Vernacular Architectural Principles Be Adapted To Contemporary Design In A Village In Guyana, Davina Peters Bittner Apr 2005

Sustaining Culture Through Architecture : How Can Local, Vernacular Architectural Principles Be Adapted To Contemporary Design In A Village In Guyana, Davina Peters Bittner

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores how architecture can adapt local vernacular design principles to contemporary building design in a rural setting. Vernacular buildings in Guyana present a unique and coherent set of design principles developed in response to climatic and cultural conditions. The concept of “habitus” proposed by philosopher Pierre Bourdieu describing the evolving nature of social culture was used to interpret Guyanese local buildings. These principles were then applied to the design of a Women’s Center in the village of Port Mourant on the east coast of Guyana. The design specifically interpreted the “bottom-house” of local Guyanese architecture, an inherently flexible …

Cultural Influences : Visual Traces Of The Cuban Community In Hialeah, José Antonio Aguada Apr 2005

Cultural Influences : Visual Traces Of The Cuban Community In Hialeah, José Antonio Aguada

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines specific changes and modifications made to the domestic architecture of Hialeah that relate to the construction of cultural identity. Much of the study is based upon oral histories from twelve (12) Cuban immigrants now residing in Hialeah, focusing on their renovated houses as architectural responses to cultural and social changes in their community and family life.

The research focused specifically on those renovations that transformed standard developers' houses into the "Cuban" home. A shared theme was the creation of additions, where the point of connections between the existing and the new structures as well as how these …

Architecture As Contextual Re-Interpretation : A Mixed-Use Cultural Center In Old Havana, Cuba, Gabriel Fuentes Apr 2005

Architecture As Contextual Re-Interpretation : A Mixed-Use Cultural Center In Old Havana, Cuba, Gabriel Fuentes

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis addresses contextual design in the city, particularly the design of contemporary architecture in historic places.

The research focuses on an analysis of Old Havana's urban architecture, particularly the spatial qualities of colonial Cuban houses as well as visual, social, and functional qualities of their urban façades. Additionally, I analyze specific mid-twentieth century houses that reinterpret Cuba’s colonial architecture in order to derive architectural principles that are tested in my design process.

The design project is a mixed-use cultural center at the Plaza Vieja in Old Havana, Cuba. As a cultural destination currently under going restoration, the Plaza Vieja …

Transitional Areas Between Public And Private Space, Hernan Beillard Apr 2005

Transitional Areas Between Public And Private Space, Hernan Beillard

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes transitional areas between public and private space in order to develop a design that might improve social interaction in the city. Architectural elements in specific pedestrian friendly spaces within the Miami area were identified and analyzed as social spaces in terms developed by Ali Mandanipour.

Proximity, visual permeability, intersection, layering, and monumentality are design strategies used in many projects to enhance individual encounters. These strategies typically apply to transitional areas and serve as the direct physical links perceived by individuals moving between public and private areas. This project explores the different approaches to transitional areas in the …
