An Enlightening View Of Design Appointed In Georg Simmel's Philosophy Of Life, Syh-Hai Liang Aug 1974

An Enlightening View Of Design Appointed In Georg Simmel's Philosophy Of Life, Syh-Hai Liang

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This study is concerned with the fundamental issues in architecture. The proposed perspective is visualized from a philosophical point of view which is central in the thoughts of Georg Simmel, a German sociologist and philosopher. Intrinsically speaking, architecture belongs to a kind of II form-giving" activity. As such, architeicture brings about physical intermediaries to facilitate the realization of human purposes in other aspects of culture.

The argument is introduced by reconciling “form" and

''function” with each other. In essence, the two notions refer to one entity; Wright asserts: "form and function are one." It is contended that the primary concern …

A Survey Of Selected Environmental Groups Active In New Mexico And The Southwest, Spring 1974, May Louise Holbrook Jul 1974

A Survey Of Selected Environmental Groups Active In New Mexico And The Southwest, Spring 1974, May Louise Holbrook

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The operations of seven environmental groups which are currently active in New Mexico and Colorado are discussed, including their history, successes, and failures. Structure, financial support, and individual priorities are described in detail, as well as response to social and racial issues. A common thread in the testimony of surveyed executives has been the declaration of need for dedicated personnel to broaden the activities of the organizations. Comparisons and contrasts in the groups' operations are pointed out for those who seek environmental information and data and for those who may be interested in working with such groups.

A Feasibility Study For Apartments, Roger Easley Jun 1974

A Feasibility Study For Apartments, Roger Easley

Architecture and Planning ETDs

This study seeks to provide a method which can be used to obtain the information necessary for the design of apartments within the limitations imposed by prevailing market conditions, financial considerations and investor needs. This is accomplished by presenting first, a method of market analysis designed to determine if a market exists in a given locality and delineating specifics about that market which would affect the design. A method is also developed for translating the market conditions into a form which wold indicate whether or not a proposed apartment project is economically feasible and what its probable value would be …

Humboldt Bay Masterplan (Environmental Impact Report), Susie Van Kirk Jun 1974

Humboldt Bay Masterplan (Environmental Impact Report), Susie Van Kirk

Susie Van Kirk Papers

Descriptions of Indian sites on Humboldt Bay have not been attempted in this report. According to Loud (1918) there were 115 archaeological sites located in the Wiyot territory which roughly covered the lower Mad River, the lower Eel and fill of Humboldt Bay Approximately 70 of these sites were on or near the bay. Many of the important village sites have been lost to development. The clearings in the forest, streams, and bluffs above the tidelands were naturally chosen by white settlers just as they had been chosen by Indian people generations before.

Inventories of Wiyot sites in the area …

Site Planning Study Of Subsidized Housing Projects In Albuquerque, New Mexico, John Platt Friedman May 1974

Site Planning Study Of Subsidized Housing Projects In Albuquerque, New Mexico, John Platt Friedman

Architecture and Planning ETDs

The need for subsidized housing is a growing problem in both the United States and Albuquerque, New Mexico. This study was based on the assumption that any attempt to meet the need should be based on consumer-oriented housing research. A large sample of residents from three Turnkey III housing projects in Albuquerque were interviewed to gain an understanding of their major housing objectives and to compare site planning at the three sites. A brief summary of the results of this introductory study were as follows:

-respondents had a strong identification with specific areas of the city which influenced their preferences …

Architectural Energy Conservation Design: Mechanical System Manipulation For Solar Application To Multi-Story Construction, Donald Killough Fitzgerald May 1974

Architectural Energy Conservation Design: Mechanical System Manipulation For Solar Application To Multi-Story Construction, Donald Killough Fitzgerald

Architecture and Planning ETDs

At the very time the world economy, particularly the economies of the industrialized countries, is becoming increasingly dependent on the consumption of energy, there is a growing realization that the main sources of this energy, the earth's nonrenewable fossil fuel reserves, will inevitably be exhausted. The eventual solution to this energy problem depends not only on developing alternative sources of energy but also on devising new methods of energy conversion. Solar energy is diffuse, but its abundance makes it a major energy resource for the United States and for the world. Being an incoming source of energy, solar energy is …

Residential Infill Development In The City Of Albuquerque, Bruce Alan Briggs May 1974

Residential Infill Development In The City Of Albuquerque, Bruce Alan Briggs

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Rapid expansion took place in the City of Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1950 through 1970. The new developments often occurred some distance away from the existing city. This pattern of growth has resulted in vacant, undeveloped parcels of land scattered throughout the city. These undeveloped areas reveal the economic disadvantages of annexing new land to the existing city limits when so much vacant land is available for development within.

There are three major problem areas which discuss possible methods for prompting residential development on some of these vacant parcels. Problem area number one discusses one method for lowering land costs …

Proposed Redevelopment: Solvay Process Wastebeds, Michael Joseph Starego May 1974

Proposed Redevelopment: Solvay Process Wastebeds, Michael Joseph Starego

Architecture Master Theses

The planned development of the Solvay Process Wastebeds will be a classic case of environmental planning. The need for more planned open spaces becomes more evident and necessary as the population of Syracuse spreads and increases. The creation of the Solvay "Open Space" can draw on the network of existing open spaces within the region and the gradual reclamation of Onondaga Lake.

The knowledge we now have, compared with the early years of the wastebeds, is considerable and should enable a better plan to be made incorporating them into the life of the community. There are of course, no general …

The Impact Of Building Code Regulation On The Manufactured Housing And Mobile Home Industries, Robert Ernest Johnson May 1974

The Impact Of Building Code Regulation On The Manufactured Housing And Mobile Home Industries, Robert Ernest Johnson

Architecture Master Theses

Efforts/to understand the relationship of the built environment to the context in which it is placed are constantly expanding into new areas. This is, of course, due to the fact that architecture is concerned with the "total system" and thus deals directly with a wide range of disciplines.

This study centers on one aspect of the larger problem. It is concerned first with the organization of the construction industry and the effect: this organization has had on the development of industrialized housing. Secondly, the study focuses on a specific aspect of the construction industry that has significantly affected the growth …
