Mechanisms Affecting Viscosity Of Cement Paste Made With Microfines Of Manufactured Sand, Jiang Zhu, Jiaping Liu, Kamal Khayat, Xin Shu, Qianping Ran, Zhen Li

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Viscosity of cement-based materials incorporating manufactured sand is affected by the content and physical properties of the microfines in the sand. However, some of the mechanisms affecting the viscosity remain unclear. This paper investigates the effect of microfine type and content on the apparent viscosity (ηapp) and residual viscosity in/near pseudo-Newtonian regime (ηrespse−New) of cement pastes. Limestone (LS), slate (ST), and tuff (TF) microfines with different specific surface areas were investigated. Test results showed that, by deducting the greater contribution of yield stress to ηapp when using finer microfines, the increase of ηrespse−New at a given PCE dosage was mainly …

On Internal Resonance Analysis Of A Double-Cable-Stayed Shallow-Arch Model With Elastic Supports At Both Ends, Xiaoyang Su, Houjun Kang, Tieding Guo, Guirong Grace Yan

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In previous research on the nonlinear dynamics of cable-stayed bridges, boundary conditions were not properly modeled in the modeling. In order to obtain the nonlinear dynamics of cable-stayed bridges more accurately, a double-cable-stayed shallow-arch model with elastic supports at both ends and the initial configuration of bridge deck included in the modeling is developed in this study. The in-plane eigenvalue problems of the model are solved by dividing the shallow arch (SA) into three partitions according to the number of cables and the piecewise functions are taken as trial functions of the SA. Then, the in-plane one-to-one-to-one internal resonance among …

Wavelet Power And Shannon Entropy Applied To Acoustic Emission Signals For Corrosion Detection And Evaluation Of Reinforced Concrete, Jinrui Zhang, Ziye Kang, Dongshuai Hou, Biqin Dong, Hongyan Ma

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Acoustic emission (AE) signals detected from corrosion test on a steel reinforced concrete beam subjected to the coupling effects of corrosive wet-dry cycles and static load are analyzed by power spectral density, wavelet transform, and Shannon entropy. The degradation process of the corroded reinforced concrete beam can be divided into four stages on the basis of the accumulated event number (AEN). Due to the difference of material properties, steel reinforcement and concrete matrix have distinguished AE features. The time-frequency characteristics of AE signals can reflect the microstructural degradation mechanism of steel corrosion and concrete cracking. The corrosion evaluation entails investigating …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cement has been a major consumable material for construction in the world since its invention, but its low flexural strength is the main defect affecting the service life of structures. To adapt cement-based materials to a more stringent environment, carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) are proposed to enhance the mechanical properties of cement paste. This study systematically verifies the synergistic effect of CNTs-COOH/PVA on the performance of cement paste. First, UV-Vis spectroscopy and FTIR spectroscopy prove that CNTs-COOH can provide attachment sites for PVA and PVA can improve the dispersion and stability of CNTs-COOH in water, which …

Hydration Of High-Alumina Calcium Aluminate Cements With Carbonate And Sulfate Additives, Jonathan Lapeyre, Sai Akshay Ponduru, Monday Uchenna Okoronkwo, Hongyan Ma, Aditya Kumar

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study investigated the influence of limestone (LS) and calcium sulfate (C$) mineral additives on the hydration kinetics of high-α-Al2O3 calcium aluminate cement (CAC) utilizing experimental techniques and thermodynamic simulations. Increasing the replacement level of limestone or calcium sulfate increased the cumulative heat of the hydration reaction. The limestone exhibited limited acceleratory effects to the CAC hydration kinetics due to the coarseness of the powder. The coarse particle size distribution limited any heterogenous nucleation that would have occurred with a finer particle size as well as the intrinsic insolubility kinetically limits the formation of monocarboaluminate phases. Conversely, …

Evolution Prediction Of Hysteresis Behavior Of Sand Under Cyclic Loading, Pingxin Xia, Longtan Shao, Wen Deng, Chao Zeng May 2022

Evolution Prediction Of Hysteresis Behavior Of Sand Under Cyclic Loading, Pingxin Xia, Longtan Shao, Wen Deng, Chao Zeng

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Soil cyclic degradation is a serious issue that should be considered in engineering design and maintenance. The hysteretic response causes strength degradation and excessive settlement of soil structure in engineered and natural geosystems. Hysteresis is essentially the coupling deformation of elastic and plastic components during reloading and unloading processes. Conventional hysteretic models for sand in the elastoplastic framework rely highly on yield surface or potential surface evolution and fall short on complexity and inaccuracy. This study proposes a decoupling method to describe the hysteretic response of sand. In contrast to the conventional elastoplastic approach, this decoupling method can directly decouple …

Regularized Inversion Of Aerosol Hygroscopic Growth Factor Probability Density Function: Application To Humidity-Controlled Fast Integrated Mobility Spectrometer Measurements, Jiaoshi Zhang, Yang Wang, Steven Spielman, Susanne Hering, Jian Wang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aerosol hygroscopic growth plays an important role in atmospheric particle chemistry and the effects of aerosol on radiation and hence climate. The hygroscopic growth is often characterized by a growth factor probability density function (GF-PDF), where the growth factor is defined as the ratio of the particle size at a specified relative humidity to its dry size. Parametric, least-squares methods are the most widely used algorithms for inverting the GF-PDF from measurements of the humidified tandem differential mobility analyzer (HTDMA) and have been recently applied to the GF-PDF inversion from measurements of the humidity-controlled fast integrated mobility spectrometer (HFIMS). However, …

Evaluating The Low-Temperature Properties Of Asphalt Binders Extracted From Mixtures Containing Recycled Materials, Eslam Deef-Allah, Magdy Abdelrahman

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The use of recycled materials − such as reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) − in asphalt mixtures reduces natural resources demands and decreases materials dumped in landfills. The aged binders included in the recycled materials alter binders' low-temperature properties included in asphalt mixtures. Therefore, asphalt binders were extracted from asphalt mixtures collected from the field as cores. Due to the limited amount of extracted asphalt binders (EABs), a dynamic shear rheometer was used to examine the low-temperature properties [e.g., true temperature (Tt), continuous temperature (Tc), and delta continuous temperature (ΔTc)]. Using recycled materials in asphalt mixtures …

A Neural Network-Based Multivariate Seismic Classifier For Simultaneous Post-Earthquake Fragility Estimation And Damage Classification, Xinzhe Yuan, Genda Chen, Pu Jiao, Liujun Li, Jun Han, Haibin Zhang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A scalar intensity measure (IM) could be insufficient to represent the earthquake intensity and variety in fragility estimation. Introducing multiple IMs to conventional regression of fragility functions can be computationally demanding and require priori assumptions of functional forms. In this study, multivariate seismic classifiers with multiple IMs as inputs are developed based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) to address the above disadvantages of traditional regression approaches. Case studies of a four-story code-conforming benchmark building indicate that fragility estimates from multi-IM ANN classifiers lead to higher accuracy (5.0% to 7.7%) in system-level and element-level damage classification than the single-IM traditional fragility …

Revealing Bluff-Body Aerodynamics On Low-Rise Buildings Under Tornadic Winds Using Numerical Laboratory Tornado Simulator, Ryan Honerkamp, Guirong Grace Yan, John Van De Lindt

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Tornadoes result in death and property loss in communities around the world. To quantify the actions of tornadoes on civil structures, researchers have built physical laboratory tornado simulators to simulate tornadoes in the lab environment and tested building models in the simulated tornadic wind field, which is similar to wind tunnel testing when quantifying the wind effects induced by straight-line winds. Unfortunately, physical tornado simulators are much less common than straight-line wind tunnels, leading to the lack of research on bluff-body aerodynamics on civil structures under tornadic winds. Considering that it is expensive to conduct experimental testing in physical tornado …
