Evolving Governance Model For Community Building: Collaborative Partnerships In Master Planned Communities, Bhishna Bajracharya, Shahed Khan

Bhishna Bajracharya

The development and management of master planned communities (MPCs) involve achieving the twin goals of building a sense of community and creating a distinctive place. The roles of private, public and community sectors in realising these goals of MPCs are evolving over time. The article reports on a case study of the MPC of Varsity Lakes in Gold Coast to investigate the role of key stakeholders as well as their collaborative initiatives for community building. It examines the community governance model being introduced by the developer for the management of the development once the developer has completed work on the …

The development and management of master planned communities (MPCs) involve achieving the twin goals of building a sense of community and creating a distinctive place identity. The roles of private, public and community sectors in realising these goals of MPCs have been evolving over time with the increasing role of developers in provision of services with the local government playing a regulatory/facilitative role and community calling for greater engagement and local control. The major objective of the paper is to critically examine the nature and outcomes of collaboration between developers, local/state governments and existing/emerging community groups in the development of …

Building Better Suburbs: Design Controls In Master Planned Communities:- An Australian Perspective, Henry Nguo, Lynne Armitage

Lynne Armitage

Master planned communities in Australia are an increasingly popular form of residential development responding to localised pressure of population increase. They are characterised (Minnery and Bajracharya, 1999; Gwyther, 2005) as private sector driven, large scale, integrated housing developments located on greenfield sites, most frequently on the outskirts of major metropolitan areas. Whilst the conception, planning and provision of such communities lies in the hands of the major stakeholders – developers and state and local government – the provision of the unit of consumption, the dwelling, is the purview of housebuilders and also, at the level of final consumption, the concern …

Sustainable Economies In Master Planned Communities, P. Wales Nov 2003

Sustainable Economies In Master Planned Communities, P. Wales

Ned Wales

The intent of this paper is to discuss the principles for forming industrial ecologies in master planned communities. There is a growing need for both land developers; government agencies and the construction industry to encourage a holistic approach toward newly constructed communities rather than creating bedroom dormitories where typically greater reliance on resources and emissions of green house gases occurs. The paper proposes a framework to understand how all of the aspects of sustainable local economies can compete in current global economic dynamics, which can over ride local economic potential.

It is evident as a society we need to make …

Visions, Planning Processes And Outcomes Of Master Planned Communities In South East Queensland, John Minnery, Bhishna Bajracharya

Extract:

A number of master planned communities (MPCs) have been built or are in the process of being developed in South East Queensland. They provide a useful, accessible and important focus for research into crucial public policy issues and land use planning processes. Master planned communities are characterised as being large scale, private sector driven, integrated housing developments on 'greenfield' suburban sites. The impetus for development comes from an entrepreneur with a vision backed by financial resources, who takes what some see as all the associated risks to gain all the rewards (Gaines, 1992). MPCs usually integrate a mix of …
