Planning For Growth In Cities And Metropolitan Regions: An Empirical Study Of Impact Fees And Choice, Chi-Hyoung Park
Planning For Growth In Cities And Metropolitan Regions: An Empirical Study Of Impact Fees And Choice, Chi-Hyoung Park
Planning Dissertations
This research examines what city factors relate to the likelihood of adopting impact fees by local governments within metropolitan regions using data from the U.S. Census Bureau. More and more cities are adopting different types of impact fees for financing public facilities and infrastructure to accommodate their cities' growth without full understanding of issues, public and private criticisms of impact fees, and the empirical information needed. This dissertation investigates a random sample of 278 cities out of 827 cities populations over 25,000 located within 97 MSAs to understand what variables within their settings relate to impact fee adoptions using five …
A Comparative Study Of Performance Measurement In Korean Local Governments Using Data Envelopment Analysis And Stochastic Frontier Analysis, Dong Jin Lim
Planning Dissertations
This study examines efficiency as a key component of performance, applies new performance measurement techniques to the measurement of local government performance, and verifies theoretical debates on economic, financial, political, and environmental factors related to performance in local government. Improving performance and promoting efficiencies in local government are important issues in both academic and practical public administration. Despite the remarkable development of performance measurement in local government since the 1990s, empirical evidence is still limited on the extent of the utility and practicability of performance measurement in local government.
Results of this research are developed from a study of Korean …
Do Green Buildings Influence People's Lifestyle Decisions And Support For Environmental Policy?, Amanda L. Popken
Do Green Buildings Influence People's Lifestyle Decisions And Support For Environmental Policy?, Amanda L. Popken
Planning Theses
This thesis explores the possibility that experience with green buildings influences peoples' behavior in ways that help bridge the gap between, on one hand, public concern for the natural environment and on the other hand, willingness to adopt sustainable lifestyles and support pro-environmental policies. The study utilizes research on factors that influence behavior to construct a theoretical model in which these factors might be influenced by a person's experience in a green building. The study explores two specific possibilities of behavioral change: people may change their consumption habits to reflect a more sustainable lifestyle; people may change their political behavior …
Growth/Decline Of Employment Subcenter In Polycentric Regions: The Case Of The Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area, Maher Sayel Al-Shammari
Growth/Decline Of Employment Subcenter In Polycentric Regions: The Case Of The Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area, Maher Sayel Al-Shammari
Planning Dissertations
This research is concerned with explaining the variation in growth rates among employment subcenters. The purpose of the study is to find answers to the question: What factors/variables contribute to the growth or decline of employment subcenters? More specifically, the study aims to 1) identify and describe employment subcenters in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, and 2) explain the variation in their growth rate over a specified period of time through testing a set of variables extracted from related literature. A multiple regression analysis technique is employed to complete the empirical analysis. The DFW metropolitan area was chosen as a …

Masterplanned Communities And Governance, Bhishna Bajracharya, Paul Donehue, Douglas Baker
Bhishna Bajracharya
In the last three decades, a number of master planned communities (MPCs) have been developed in South East Queensland (SEQ) as part of the response to the housing demands of rapid population growth. Developers, state government, local councils and communities play key roles in the production and management of infrastructure and community services in these Masterplanned communities. Alongside rising community expectations regarding quality of services, there is an increasing trend for developers to be involved in either the direct provision of infrastructure, or its funding, with local councils and the state government playing a facilitating role in provision of services …

Stormwater Quality And Local Government Innovation, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell
Stormwater Quality And Local Government Innovation, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell
City and Regional Planning
Local governments need innovative practices to address nonpoint source pollution, which has proven to be the Achilles heel of efforts to improve surface water quality in the United States. Studies by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that 45% of assessed lakes and 39% of assessed rivers in the nation are polluted, and that agricultural and urban runoff were the primary sources of these problems (EPA, 2000, 2002). New approaches to address runoff are clearly necessary, and their success will depend on local government practices, yet we know little about how and why local governments innovate, particularly in response …

Not Another Waikiki? Mobolizing Topophilia And Topophobia In Coastal Resort Areas, Daniel O'Hare
Not Another Waikiki? Mobolizing Topophilia And Topophobia In Coastal Resort Areas, Daniel O'Hare
Daniel O'Hare
Extract:
This chapter explores international discourses of love and aversion relating to the development of coastal tourism areas throughout the twentieth century. Particular attention is paid to the way that urban planning, design and development decisions relate to the broader discourse. Examples from Australia, Thailand, Spain and the United States are used to support an argument that topophilic and topophobic attitudes, in relation to some of the world’s best-known coastal mass tourism resorts, are used to inform development decisions in less developed coastal settlements. In this chapter, a discourse is understood as "any discussion or exchange of ideas, expressed through …

MIRA/LOOK: New Visions for Architecture in Holyoke (2008)
This studio promotes creative research and conceptually rigorous design methodologies that aim to illuminate, situate, and contest the complex circumstances within which a truly “sustainable” architecture can emerge — an architecture capable of escaping a narrow technological focus, while addressing the broader social and theoretical implications of sustainability. The interplay between site, culture and program is a key focus of the studio. Through critical assessments of a broad range of specific site conditions students develop investigative strategies for responsive architectural interventions that bridge the gap between theory and practice. This semester we will be working on a series of projects …
Interrogatorio A La Descentralización Latinoamericana, Fernando Carrión Mena
Interrogatorio A La Descentralización Latinoamericana, Fernando Carrión Mena

Too often, the Philadelphia sports fan has been dismissed as a lout, a boorish dolt immune to reason, his vocabulary whittled down to a singular “boo.” This is particularly true when it comes to Phillies fans, who are more likely to turn on their team than any other in the city. Although the Eagles, Sixers and Flyers may hear it from the rafters when they’re not going well, only the Phils will hear it when they are. The strained relationship between the city and the Phillies, however, has deep historical and sociological roots; roots that directly correlate with the city’s …

The objective of the paper is to stimulate the dialogue on subtropical design of transit oriented development in SEQ through conversations with six leading urban designers and planners in Queensland. The paper summarises the discussions with key informants on four key aspects; (1) key elements of subtropical TODs; ( 2) good examples of subtropical design in Brisbane and SEQ; (3) challenges to developing subtropical TOD; and (4) ideas/strategies for developing subtropical TODs. Through a critical analysis of the emerging literature on subtropical design and continual dialogue with a cross section of planning and design professionals as well as the development …

Reforma Policial: ¿Realidad Ineludible De Una Nueva Doctrina De Seguridad?, Fernando Carrión Mena
