An Historical Description And Analysis Of Lincoln, Nebraska’S Development Pattern: 1860-1985 Concentric Growth – A Fading Dream, Leonard Pavelka Dec 1987

An Historical Description And Analysis Of Lincoln, Nebraska’S Development Pattern: 1860-1985 Concentric Growth – A Fading Dream, Leonard Pavelka

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

Three successive comprehensive plans for the city of Lincoln, Nebraska have advocated concentric growth as a goal. This thesis analyses Lincoln’s physical and economic development and finds that many elements that played a major role in the city’s growth strongly influenced residential expansion in two directions – east and south. Further investigation revealed that Lincoln’s comprehensive plans have weakened the central business district and strengthened the Gateway-East Park retail complex in east Lincoln. This thesis demonstrates that both historical tendency and the process of incremental policy making employed by the City Council make realization of the goal of concentric growth improbable.

Notable Efforts To Meet Emerging Housing Needs, Chester Smolski

"This is a landmark year in the historical development of housing in the nation, ad Rhode Island almost became a part of this bigger picture. One noteworthy event has already taken place, and two special birthdays are observed throughout the year."

Helping Communities Determine Development, Chester Smolski Oct 1987

Helping Communities Determine Development, Chester Smolski

Smolski Texts

"The word uppermost in the minds of many communities these days is 'development,' a process that manifests itself on the land in the form of the built environment. Alarmed at the speed with which land is being used--and often abused--communities are being faced with touch decisions on how to cope with development, either by directing it, managing it or even stopping it."

Harlem On My Mind, Shawn L. Rickenbacker Oct 1987

Harlem On My Mind, Shawn L. Rickenbacker

Architecture Senior Theses

The thesis involves directly establishing a coherent dialogue between participants and architecture. The site and architecture involved are only a catalyst to the area it is representing, Harlem. However, the project will have the responsibilities of designating itself as a primary theshold to the famous ditricts and attracting would be participants. It is for this reason the program of cultural progress centre has been chosen in the interest of providing a stimulation program. The intention of the proposed centre is not to compete with the district or communty in which it lies, but to act as its subordinate. This will …

A Proposal To Foster Civic Leadership And Participation In Knoxville, Madeline A. Rogero Jun 1987

A Proposal To Foster Civic Leadership And Participation In Knoxville, Madeline A. Rogero

Masters Theses

The ineffectiveness of leadership and a low level of citizen participation in public affairs in Knoxville prompted this study. Research showed that Knoxville's leaders are dissatisfied with their own ineffectiveness and there are few opportunities for citizens to participate in the decision-making process for major community issues.

Based on a contemporary theory of leadership, this thesis suggests that the ineffectiveness of leadership reflects an ineffectiveness of followership. Leaders and citizens must engage in an interactive process in order to achieve a mutual empowerment and to build a tradition of civic leadership. This thesis proposes that such an interactive process could …

Mature Industrial Communities: The Realities Of Reindustrialization, John R. Mullin, Jeanne H. Armstrong

Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Faculty Publication Series

This article analyzes the reindustrialization problems facing mature-industry communities in Massachusetts. The findings are based upon our planning consulting work and research projects involving forty cities and towns. A variety of factors are reviewed, including unionization; work-force characteristics; the relationship between small and large plants; the characteristics of local companies; location; financing; the availability of land; and the role of local planning. Finally, we present recommendations concerning local action and possible …

Conserving Nantucket, Steve Sheppard Jan 1987

Conserving Nantucket, Steve Sheppard

Bridgewater Review

The pristine qualities that make Nantucket a distinct place, and somewhere “far away,” both geographically and philosophically, also make it a refuge, an attractive haven and resort with less traffic, pollution and people than the mainland thirty miles away. Nantucket’s popularity is beginning to catch up with her. No longer just a summer place, Nantucket is now an active year-round community, with a tourist season that stretches from late April until well past Columbus Day. The most visible manifestation of Nantucket’s increased popularity is a building boom that is fast chewing up the island's open spaces and threatening its rural …
