On the University of Texas at Arlington campus, investing in green infrastructure is critical for managing stormwater and heat stress today and addressing the emerging challenges caused by a changing climate: shifting precipitation patterns, “cloudbursts” or flash floods, and more frequent and severe extreme heat events. In 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency provided technical assistance to UTA as part of the tenth anniversary of the Campus RainWorks Challenge, a national design competition that advances green infrastructure design on college and university campuses across the country. Re-Imagining A Neighborhood Center: Completing Mixed-Use Streets In The Elmwood Neighborhood Utilizing Dallas' Complete Streets Design Manual, Shirley Jane Mathews, Ardeshir Anjomani

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Walkable neighborhoods with adjacent commercial centers have the ability to encourage mode shifts to walking, bicycling, or transit. Mode shifts from single-occupancy vehicles (SOV) to the destinations within a neighborhood center of Elmwood's size may result in approximately 3,000 SOV trip reductions per day (H-GAC, 2018). This study examines the Dallas Complete Streets Design Manual (2016) and applies the Dallas Complete Streets Vision to a 1,400 foot (.3 mile) segment of Edgefield Avenue, adapting the guidelines to Edgefield Avenue with site-specific consideration. It refers to the Dallas Complete Streets Design Guidelines in the development of a complete street proposal for …

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Grand Prairie is growing in population and development, and one of its most identifiable locations, the Entertainment District is at its center. Located at the Belt-Line and I-30 intersection, Grand Prairie Entertainment District has the potential to be a premier regional attraction, but more must be done to enhance and unite the amenities within the area. Affordable Housing For Senior Adults, Athena Seaton, Ardeshir Anjomani

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Despite the fact that America is aging, the trend for many cities is to appeal to the Millennial (born between 1977 and 1995) and Generation X (born between 1965 and 1976) populations. Most literature in planning and urban development has focused on appealing to the upcoming generation of young professionals who prefer public transportation and living downtown in walkable communities. New building construction is expanding though new rental housing is mostly targeted toward those with higher incomes, affordable housing is not increasing to the same degree. Consequently, the realization of the growing need for affordable housing for senior adults has …

Navigating Through Sex Business Regulation: A Case Study Of Crime Statistics, Kristina Marie Heredia, Enid Arvidson

Planning Masters Professional Reports

The world of sex business regulation can be muddled and confusing. In the past, cities banned sexually-oriented businesses (SOBs) on the basis that they were morally bankrupt and obscene. Courts have ruled that the First Amendment bars cities from regulating these businesses based on the content of the business, and therefore cities have found a way to regulate SOBs based on real or perceived negative effects that SOBs bring to the surrounding community. These negative effects are called secondary effects and their existence has been recently called into question. This report goes over the history of SOB regulations, studies that …

Buildout Population Projections, Chelsea Irby Dec 2015

Buildout Population Projections, Chelsea Irby

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Buildout population projections are used by various municipalities and entities to project the ultimate population, or carrying capacity, of a specific area. There are many methods used to calculate buildout population. It is generally done by identifying the highest allowed uses in the vacant areas, based on the future land use plan, and calculating the maximum number of households and population. The maximum population in the vacant areas is then added to the existing population in that area to get the buildout population. Municipalities generally use these type of projections in comprehensive plans to set a vision for the future …

To validate this hypothesis, this professional report compares and contrasts parking policies and best practices of municipalities that have adopted alternatives to standard minimum parking requirements to draw suggestions to present to the City of Dallas. Current parking policy in Dallas has a simple minimum parking requirement (MPR) based on the size and type of use, calculated by recommended industry standards circa 1950 and adjusted through the mid 1980's as automobile ownership has increased. Restoration Of A Declining Inner-Ring Suburban Area: Lamar-Collins, Arlington, Texas, Ashley Shook

Planning Masters Professional Reports

Inner-ring suburban revitalization and redevelopment is a growing challenge in the United States as downtowns and outer-ring suburbs receive increased investment. Greenfields in fringe cities offer less construction obstacles and more return on investment for private sector developers leaving inner-ring suburbs behind. Additionally, with aging infrastructure and housing stock, declining population, increasing crime, and regional competition for investment, inner-ring suburbs face mounting difficulty toward recovery. One neighborhood at a time, these first-tier suburbs encourage investment from within and outside of the community through various planning techniques, some for successfully than others. Adding to the mounting obstacles is the misunderstanding of …
