Satisfaction And Perception Of Residents With Bioclimatic Design Strategies – A Discovery From Racial And Ethnic Perspective, Adi Ainurzaman Jamaludin

Adi Ainurzaman Jamaludin

A satisfaction and perception survey was carried out to assess the effects of recent adoption of bioclimatic design strategies in influencing the residents’ comfort levels and the appropriateness of an old building to meet the needs of contemporary life. This residential building is located in Kuala Lumpur and was recognised as a residential college building with the most considerate implementation of bioclimatic design strategies, particularly in terms of the daylighting and natural ventilation. As relying on 95% confidence level and ±5% margin of error from the overall population, a total of 266 responses retrieved were fully supplied by the respondents. …

In dense urban areas, surface parking often poses an opportunity cost, and reuse of the land for urban development with parking relocated to a multistory structure may be an attractive option. This paper analyzes the cost of replacing surface parking with a parking structure and finds that it may be equally cost effective to pursue travel demand management strategies. The paper analyzes what it costs to build a parking space in a multi-story structure (garage) using US average data as well as data from a substantially higher-cost case, the University of California, Berkeley. The Berkeley case illustrates how replacement of …

Intersectionality And Planning At The Margins: Lgbtq Youth Of Color In New York, Clara Irazabal, Claudia Huerta

Clara Irazabal

Through an intersectional lens, this article reflects on the dialog between planning and gender, feminist, and queer studies to analyze the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth of color (YOC) community in New York City (NYC). The community is subject to multiple disenfranchisements, given their ethno-racial status, class, age, gender, and sexual orientation. This community's limited access to safe public spaces and amenities, housing, health services, job training, and other opportunities is an urban planning challenge insufficiently understood or addressed. Our methodology includes participant observation and analysis of an LGBTQ YOC tour of West Village in NYC, interviews …

Mainstreaming Ecosystem-Based Adaptation: Transformation Toward Sustainability In Urban Governance And Planning, Christine Wamsler

Christine Wamsler

The concept of ecosystem-based adaptation is advocated at international, national, and regional levels. The concept is thought to foster sustainability transitions and is receiving increasing interest from academic and governmental bodies alike. However, there is little theory regarding the pathways for its systematic implementation. It furthermore remains unclear to what degree the concept is already applied in urban planning practice, how it is integrated into existing planning structures and processes, and what drivers exist for further integration. Against this background, this study examines potential ways to sustainably mainstream ecosystembased adaptation into urban planning. Eight municipalities in Southern Germany were investigated …

Shortage of open green spaces has become a common concern in today’s compact cities. Based on the literature review, urban open green spaces provide different dimensions of sustainability because of opportunities for social, environmental, and economic benefits which contribute to quality of life in cities. Urban development and renewal should be accompanied with a greening vision, to insert more plantable spaces into the urban fabric. Therefore sustainable urban planning, design and management are needed to improve urban greening strategy. In order to enhance urban greenery, innovative and creative ideas should be applied in urban management, for instance informal open green …
