Social Architecture And The Law: Law, Through The Lens Of Religion, Lorin Geitner

How can we account for the differing popular images of attorney in variouscountries? One way of doing so may be to bring a paradigm developed in religious studies toexamine the most publically accessible and prototypical venue for attorneys, the courtroom.Specifically, applying the model of critical spatial studies developed by Lefebvre and Soja inorder to examine religious ritual space to bear on a different kind of ritual space, the courtroom, its structure, organization, and use may illuminate both societal understandings of how the lawrelates to the citizen, but also inform the differing perception and status of lawyers in the United States, Britain, …
Mythological Links To Shinto Architecture, Grace B. Djokoto
Mythological Links To Shinto Architecture, Grace B. Djokoto
Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research
The practice of shrine worship has been present in Japan for centuries. The construction of shrines emanated from the belief that the kami, or spirits, needed a dwelling place. The many elements of the shrine have a connection to an aspect of the Shinto mythology. This investigation examines the major elements of a Shinto shrine and the mythological significance of each.
Frank Lloyd Wright: Influences And Worldview, Brock Stafford
Frank Lloyd Wright: Influences And Worldview, Brock Stafford
M.A. in Philosophy of History Theses
Wright was uniquely qualified to see the changing face of America. Born two years after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the end of the Civil War, Wright lived to nearly ninety-two years of age. During his lifetime, he lived through the American Industrial Revolution, both World Wars, the Wright Brothers flight, the invention of television.... Architecturally, he straddles the gap between the neoclassical period of the 19th century, marked by the admiration of Greek and Roman architecture, and the modernism of the 20th. Philosophically, he was a product of the early 19th century Romanticism, but followed his own, often …

Social Architecture And The Law, Lorin Geitner
Social Architecture And The Law, Lorin Geitner
Lorin C. Geitner
The reputation of attorneys has steadily declined over the last 50 years. How can we determine why this has occurred? Given the relatively high reputation of British Barristers, a comparison of US and British court room arrangement and practice may provide some clues, and the heuristic of "critical spatial studies" provides a methodology.
The Life And Death Of An American Block: A Dialogue With Entropy, Micah Daniel Antanaitis
The Life And Death Of An American Block: A Dialogue With Entropy, Micah Daniel Antanaitis
Masters Theses
My goal in this thesis is to frame, through design, an existing environment in a manner that fosters the witness and embrace of the reality and beauty of decay—which acts as a marker of the passage of time. My intent is to engage in a careful renewal of a neglected, and largely forgotten, urban landscape, which does not ignore its temporal context. My hope is to explore the full potential of the life cycle of buildings and discover the lesson of mortality in modern American ruins.
Things fall apart. This is a simple truth about the physical world that humanity …

The funerary chapel of Amenirdis at Medinet Habu forms an intriguing link in the development of ancient Egyptian architectural forms. Utilizing older architectural traditions and later ones, its architecture anticipates several features that later appear in Ptolemaic temples.
Polish Influence On American Synagogue Architecture, Samuel D. Gruber
Polish Influence On American Synagogue Architecture, Samuel D. Gruber
Religion - All Scholarship
Hundreds of thousands of Jews from Poland came to America after 1880. Many built synagogues with details recalling synagogues in their homeland. Immigrant artisans brought motifs and methods of Poland. Many of these synagogues were small, so the relationship to Polish art was on the inside in the painted and carved decoration. Established architects also had access to Polish synagogues as sources. With publication of the Jewish Encyclopedia (1901-06) images of Polish synagogues, such as the Warsaw’s Tlomackie Street Synagogue, became part of many Jewish libraries. More Polish influence came in the 1950s. Most architects were building modern synagogues, …
Medieval Synagogues In The Mediterranean Region, Samuel D. Gruber
Medieval Synagogues In The Mediterranean Region, Samuel D. Gruber
Religion - All Scholarship
Throughout the Middle Ages, the synagogue developed as the central identifying institution and physical building for Jews, replacing the still yearned for but increasingly distant Jerusalem Temple as the focus of Jewish identity. Equally important, the synagogue became the symbol par excellance of the Jews and their community for the Christian (or Muslim) majority populations in the countries where Jews were settled. For Christians, the synagogue was a Jewish church, but much more so, it came to symbolize in opposition all that the church represented.
Though relatively little known today, medieval synagogues were not symbolic abstractions to the men and …

Summary Report For The 2010 Season, Mark Schuler
Excavation Reports
In 2010, excavation work concentrated on the area east of the domus of the North-East Church between Cardo 3 North and Cardo 4 North. This area may be the remains of a palatial home of a prominent citizen of the city. If our hypothesis holds true, the house would be some 375 m2 plus a garden to the north.1 In addition to the architecture revealed in 2010, small finds raise interesting questions about the use of the area and about the religious life of the community in the Byzantine period. This report will detail work done in three areas and …
A Philology Of Liberation: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As A Reader Of The Classics, Thomas Strunk Ph.D.
A Philology Of Liberation: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As A Reader Of The Classics, Thomas Strunk Ph.D.
Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
This paper explores the intellectual relationship between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the classics, particularly the works of Plato, Sophocles, and Aeschylus. Recognizing Dr. King as a reader of the classics is significant for two reasons: the classics played a formative role in Dr. King’s development into a political activist and an intellectual of the first order; moreover, Dr. King shows us the way to read the classics. Dr. King did not read the classics in a pedantic or even academic manner, but for the purpose of liberation. Dr. King’s legacy, thus, is not merely his political accomplishments but …
Revealing Iberian Woodcraft: Conserved Wooden Artefacts From South-East Spain, Pablo Rosser
Revealing Iberian Woodcraft: Conserved Wooden Artefacts From South-East Spain, Pablo Rosser
pablo rosser
Yolanda Carrion & Pablo Rosser Six wells at Tossal de les Basses in Spain captured a large assemblage of Iberian woodworking debris. The authors’ analysis distinguishes a wide variety of boxes, handles, staves, pegs and joinery made in different and appropriate types of wood, some – like cypress – imported from some distance away. We have here a glimpse of a sophisticated and little known industry of the fourth century BC.
