Library As Learning Object: When It Is All About The Building! [Poster], Debbie Morrow

Debbie Morrow

Have you ever been a "victim of your own success"? We have faculty who want to bring classes to the library, not to learn about information-finding, but to see and touch the technology that is part of the building itself! Hear about how developing a session featuring GVSU's new library building as a "learning object" has become a great opportunity for creating an engaging learning experience for first year students.

The Late-Modern American Jail: Epistemologies Of Space And Violence, Karen M. Morin Feb 2016

The Late-Modern American Jail: Epistemologies Of Space And Violence, Karen M. Morin

Karen M. Morin

One of the most troubling aspects of current trends in American mass incarceration is the extent to which ‘criminality’ is produced within prison walls, primarily in the form of inmate–inmate or inmate–staff assaults. Most methods of prison or jail control have the adverse, and perverse, effect of increasing inmates’ levels of fear, terror, and ultimately violence – with stabbings, beatings, and other types of assaults common occurrences. The design of podular ‘direct supervision’ jails and their accompanying philosophies of punishment aspire to change these conditions. Direct supervision features correctional officers inside each housing unit with no physical barriers impeding supervision, …

Facilities & Campus Services, Sustainable UMass and Campus Planning support sustainability and energy conservation initiatives by providing in-house resources to campus staff as well as designers and contractors working with the University. The UMass Amherst Green Building Guidelines provide a framework for approaching new construction and major renovation projects at UMass Amherst that are undergoing LEED certification by focusing the conversation on green building aspects that are most important to the campus. They are intended to be the beginning of a dynamic conversation between designers, environmental consultants and constructors, university stakeholders, and users of new high performance buildings.

Appearances Do Matter! What Libraries Can Learn From Clinton Kelly, Nancy E. Fawley Aug 2013

Appearances Do Matter! What Libraries Can Learn From Clinton Kelly, Nancy E. Fawley

Nancy Fawley

One could easily mistake Clinton Kelly’s closing keynote presentation at ACRL 2011 in Philadelphia last March as light fare. Kelly, cohost of TLC’s What Not To Wear, spoke enthusiastically about the importance of one’s appearance and the necessity of making an extra effort in the way individuals present themselves. His keynote address, and the fact that a fashion expert was a speaker at a conference for librarians, sparked debates on Twitter and in the blogosphere. Do appearances matter? I say they do and add that this applies to buildings and objects, as well. Academic libraries, especially, could benefit from some …

Takk: Explorations Of Nordic Cafe Culture, Book Proposal, Lauren L. Gallow Dec 2012

Takk: Explorations Of Nordic Cafe Culture, Book Proposal, Lauren L. Gallow

Lauren L. Gallow

You know the café I’m talking about. The one where the lighting is just right, the music is just low enough, the furniture is cozy, and the coffee mugs fit perfectly in your hand. But the reason you love this café isn’t so much about the furniture or the décor as it is about the feeling you get when you spend time there. Corey Kingston and Samantha Albert knew there was something special about Nordic cafés the first time they stepped into a coffee shop in Denmark. Their book TAKK: Explorations of Nordic Café Culture tells the story of these …

The Sacred Departments For Temple Work In Nauvoo: The Assembly Room And The Council Chamber, Lisle G. Brown Sep 2012

The Sacred Departments For Temple Work In Nauvoo: The Assembly Room And The Council Chamber, Lisle G. Brown

Lisle G Brown

The paper examines the physical layout of two rooms, one in the upper floor Joseph Smith's store, and the other in the attic of the Nauvoo Temple, for administering what is called the Mormon temple endowment. In both cases only temporary modifications were made to the interior rooms, using canvas partitions which were later removed. The text describes the appearance and arrangement of these modified interior spaces, based on contemporary historical sources, because the original buildings were completely destroyed during the 1800s.

Evaluation Of And Behavior Toward The Visual Retail Environment: Function Of Consumers’ Visual Aesthetic Sensitivity, Sarah Eubanks Wilhoit Mar 2012

Evaluation Of And Behavior Toward The Visual Retail Environment: Function Of Consumers’ Visual Aesthetic Sensitivity, Sarah Eubanks Wilhoit

Sarah Eubanks Wilhoit

The primary goal of retail environments is to stimulate positive behavior from consumers viewing the fulfilled plan of the designer or architect. This study explores the influence of the consumer trait, visual aesthetic sensitivity, upon the visual aesthetic design features of the store environment and consumer behavior. Treatment of the visual aesthetic design features of the retail environment as an integrated, holistic arrangement demonstrate the dynamic interrelation of the environment and perception as explained by Gestalt theory. Data was collected through traditional survey techniques. Statistical analyses using exploratory factor analysis, ANCOVA, and MANCOVA reveal distinct differences between consumers with high …

The University of Massachusetts has a rapidly evolving commitment to reducing greenhouse gas
emissions and improving the environmental sustainability of its operations. According to the most
recent IPCC report, the buildings sector has more potential to contribute to climate change
mitigation than any other sector. The energy efficient designs of the current spate of building
projects are indicative of the University’s commitment to green building—reducing the energy
intensity of the university relative to building area and activities. However, these efforts cannot
reduce the total energy use or greenhouse gas emissions from current levels. Among the University’s
assets with the greatest …

Owen Jones And The Conventionalization Of Ornament, John Kresten Jespersen Ph.D. Aug 2010

Owen Jones And The Conventionalization Of Ornament, John Kresten Jespersen Ph.D.

Kresten Jespersen

Owen Jones, an architect and theorist of ornament, is best remembered as an ornamenter of distinction. His theory and practice of conventional ornament, his powerful color, and his original forms which had their origins in the ornament of the Alhambra substantiate the claim that he was the greatest ornamenter of his age. The book analyzes the theory of conventionalization as it applies to ornament, color, architecture and interior design. In particular, the book explores repose as the psychological and spiritual outcome of his ornament.

Learning Spaces For The New Way Students Work, Helen Y. Chu May 2010

Learning Spaces For The New Way Students Work, Helen Y. Chu

Helen Y. Chu

Learning space design has not changed – at least not in its goal. We aspire to provide facilities and resources that support instruction and research. We want to engage and motivate our students. But our students have changed. Their needs and expectations have changed. Our students – and faculty – work and think differently. We need to redefine what “learning spaces” are. We need to re-engineer our formal and informal learning spaces. Come see the surprising and non-traditional learning spaces that the University of Oregon has transformed in hopes of inspiring a new generation of thinkers, leaders, and innovators.

Proceedings Of The 2009 Nrc Federal Facilities Council/James Madison University Symposium On Protecting Large Facility Complexes;, George H. Baker, Cheryl E. Wilkins

George H Baker

Large, complex facilities pose unique protection challenges involving multidisciplinary expertise and collaboration among government, academia, and the private sector. The symposium served as a forum for sharing experiences in dealing with large facility catastrophic events and risk management. The symposium was organized based on the value of interaction among different people representing diverse disciplines. In many instances, such interactions lead to solutions that would not have been developed within disciplinary stovepipes. The venue was divided into three panels addressing physical security, cyber security, and real facility case studies. We were also privileged to have three keynote speakers including Dr. Charles …
