In the past decades, Cambodia has experienced a boom in building construction. However, many of those buildings do not take sustainable approach into account. They are built without concern of the tropical climate which results into a high level of energy consumption from air-conditioning system. Over four million patients are admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) every year. The ICU, along with many health care settings, is generally regarded as a stress inducing environment, which may contribute to negative patient outcomes. Yet, there has been little progress in developing environments that are optimal to patient healing and using evidence-based design for ICUs. Aspects of environment studied that can be manipulated to increase positive patient outcomes are aroma, light, noise, private rooms, windows, and layout of the room. The Cully neighborhood is situated in the Northeast quadrant of Portland, Oregon. It is 2.75 square mile plot of land and home to roughly 13,000 people. In addition to being one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Portland, it is the most densely populated, with the smallest amount of parkland per capita. Over the last two decades, home value has increased 203% in Cully, compared to a 90% citywide increase. Amidst these development trends are stories of incredible resilience, resistance and activism from the affected community. This paper explores thermal and energy performance of double skin facades (DSFs) in different climate types, specifically focusing on three typologies: box window, corridor type and multistory DSFs. These systems were investigated and analyzed to answer the question of how the different DSFs perform in comparison to each other, as well as a typical curtain wall (single skin facade used as a baseline), in a multitude of climate applications. The utilized research methods included two-dimensional heat transfer analysis (finite element analysis), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and energy modeling. This article discusses results of a research study that investigated daylight performance of glazed double-skin facades (DSFs) in various climate types. The objectives of the study were: 1) to analyze the daylight levels in different types of DSFs (box window, corridor type, and multistory) in four different climates; 2) to compare daylight performance against the conventional single skin glazed facade (curtain wall); 3) to investigate the effects of facade orientations on daylight; and 4) to investigate the impacts of facade characteristics (different depth of air cavities in DSFs) on daylight levels.
