Interacting Action Of Alkali-Silica Reaction And Chloride-Induced Steel Corrosion On The Reinforced Concrete Structures – A Critical Review, Williams Dunu

CSID Journal of Infrastructure Development

The degradation of reinforced concrete (RC) structures amidst the progression of corrosion within alkali-silica reaction (ASR)-affected structures is a complex phenomenon marked by diverse causal factors and repercussions. While the initiation phase of chloride-induced steel corrosion and ASR in RC structures has received extensive scrutiny, insufficient attention has been dedicated to comprehending the propagation phase (tp). Therefore, this study addresses this gap by centering its focus on the propagation phase, driven by the imperative need to formulate efficient and sustainable maintenance, repair, and management strategies for RC structures grappling with the concurrent impacts of degradation mechanisms such as ASR and …

BAU Journal - Science and Technology

[SiW12O40]4-(SiW12) and [Mo8O26]4- (Mo8) were synthesized and characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The prepared polyoxometalates were studied as potential adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous solution. Various operational parameters—contact time, adsorbent dose, initial dye concentration, pH, and temperature— were meticulously assessed by UV/Vis spectrophotometry to study its impact on the adsorption efficacy. An inverse relationship was observed between the percentage dye removal and the initial dye concentration, highlighting the complexes' superior adsorption capabilities under lower dye loads. The …

An Ensemble Dnn Model For Automatic Detection Of Covid-19 From Cxr Scans, Hagar Hesham Eldawoudy, Mohamed Abdelazim Mohamed, Eman Abdelhalim

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The new coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been destructive to human life and has resulted in a significant number of deaths globally. Detecting COVID-19 as early as possible is a critical way to prohibit the virus from quickly passing among people. RT-PCR is a method used for COVID-19 detection, but it is very expensive and isn’t an accurate method due to its sensitivity of 60–70%. For these reasons, deep learning and imaging techniques are combined by doctors, scientific experts, and professionals for accurate and rapid COVID-19 detection. In this work, we propose a stacked ensemble model based on Linear Regression …

The Complexities Of Green Infrastructure, Troy Weber Dec 2023

The Complexities Of Green Infrastructure, Troy Weber

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

The Wabash River is the most extensive river system in Indiana. The river drains two-thirds of Indiana’s 92 counties, which can have issues associated with stormwater runoff (Weist, 1981). As precipitation runs off impervious surfaces, it can carry high concentrations of pollutants, such as excess nitrogen and phosphorus, pet waste, and automobile fuel. Prior to impervious runoff entering the river, preexisting contaminants include industrial waste (acid mine drainage and oil field brines), municipal waste, and sediment (Weist, 1981). Thus, stormwater runoff can negatively impact the Wabash River watershed. On top of this pollution, Lafayette and West Lafayette have combined sewer …

Reducing Scour Hole Dimensions Around Bridge Circular Piers Using Hexagonal Collars, Heba Kassem, El-Masry A. A, Reda Diab

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Bridge failure, due to local scour at bridge circular pier foundations, has become a critical issue in river and bridge engineering, which might lead to transportation disruption, loss of lives and economic problems. Based on an experimental perspective, this study is focused on the influence of collar’s shape on decreasing scour depth at bridge piers that were explored. Hexagonal collars with three shapes were investigated (sloped, sloped with holes, and sloped with ribs). The collars were installed on the bed level with diameter equals to three times the diameter of pier. To achieve the results, experiments were performed in clear-water …

Effect Of A Geothermal Heat Pump System On Cooling Residential Buildings In A Hot, Dry Climate, Rania Rushdy Moussa, Ayman H. Mahmoud

Architectural Engineering

ABSTRACT In the last century, electricity demand has doubled due to urban expansion, which has contributed to the formation of more urban heat islands (UHI) and the appearance of environmental hazards such as the global climate change phenomenon. Since residential buildings are considered the main electricity consumer sector in Egypt, they consume up to 42% of total energy consumption, which contributes to increasing temperatures and constitutes UHI in cities. In this context, the research aims to examine the effectiveness of using the closed vertical loop geothermal system (GSHPCV) for cooling residential buildings in a hot, dry climate, such as Cairo, …

Classification Of Kidney Masses Using Convolution Neural Network, Nada M. Yakout, Eman Abdelhalim, Abdalla Abdelhalim, Hossam El-Din Moustafa

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Classification of tumors among kidney masses (KM) through deep neural networks is one of the most important applications for detecting the disease at an early stage. It can increase patient survival rates, prevent mass growth, and prevent complications. Preoperative multi-phase abdominal Contrast Enhancement Computed Tomography (CE-CT) is widely used to detect lesions of kidney masses in order to avoid unneeded biopsy or surgery. However, decisions about treatment are difficult because of inter-observer variability caused by minute variations in the imaging characteristics of mass sub-types. In this study, we offer a comprehensive deep learning model using a Convolutional Neural Networks(CNN) for …

Truck Platooning Reshapes Greenhouse Gas Emissions Of The Integrated Vehicle-Road Infrastructure System, Huailei Cheng, Yuhong Wang, Dan Chong, Chao Xia, Lijun Sun, Jenny Liu, Kun Gao, Ruikang Yang, Tian Jin

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions has turned into a pillar of climate change mitigation. Truck platooning is proposed as a strategy to lower emissions from vehicles on roads. However, the potential interactive impacts of this technology on road infrastructure emissions remain unclear. Here, we evaluate the decarbonization effects of truck platooning on the integrated vehicle-road system at a large-scale road network level, spanning 1457 road sections across North America. We show that truck platooning decreases emissions induced by truck operations, but it degrades faster the durability of road infrastructure and leads to a 27.9% rise in road emissions due to more …
