Affordable housing has become increasingly inaccessible across the United States, particularly in California. Because of its long history and far-reaching span, California’s housing crisis is a complexity that affects individuals at most income levels. Accordingly, opinions on solving the crisis vary among each public.

A popular solution is increasing the amount and scale of housing, however, barriers, such as single-family zoning, exist at the state and local level. While statewide legislation is working to counteract municipal zoning codes, local opposition is rampant. This report, forwarded to the City of San Luis Obispo's Cultural Heritage Commission proposes Greta Place as a mid-century modern historic district. Greta is a small street located centrally in San Luis Obispo, CA (See Figure 1). It has a unique and distinct mid-century presence that is both a well-preserved and concentrated example of a collection of Mid-century single-family homes produced in San Luis Obispo as the City began to expand in the 1950s. This paper looks to identify how cities are affected by globalization. In order to attract increased investment, cities have looked towards attracting global capital. This has a homogenizing effect upon unique places of the world by imposing standardized forms of capitalist economics. This paper identifies globalization, how cities attract global capital, and how unique places in various cultures are affected by globalization. The solution proposed to combat the ill effects of globalization is to bring together global and local forces in a collaborative atmosphere. This allows for cities to receive global investment while also accounting for local culture and uniqueness.
