Protection Of Humanity’S Cultural And Historic Heritage In Space, Justin St. P. Walsh
Protection Of Humanity’S Cultural And Historic Heritage In Space, Justin St. P. Walsh
Art Faculty Articles and Research
While the international community has acted forcefully since World War II to protect sites and objects of cultural or historic significance on Earth, little attention has been paid to the same kinds of sites and objects in space. There are important ethical and scholarly reasons for wanting to preserve sites and in situ objects in off-Earth contexts from destruction or commercial exploitation. Innovative space research equipment, such as spacecraft, satellites, and space stations, and the locations of historic missions, such as Tranquility Base, therefore deserve formal international recognition and protection. Appropriate models for developing a comprehensive protective scheme can be …
Russian Architecture Between Anorexia And Bulimia, Vladimir Paperny
Russian Architecture Between Anorexia And Bulimia, Vladimir Paperny
Russian Culture
The Russian visual sensibilities (if there is such thing) are formed by two contrasting influences. On the one hand, there is a natural attraction to decorative surfaces, to richness of colors and shapes. Historians tell us that in the 10 th century Prince Vladimir decided to convert to Christianity mainly because of the visual experience his emissaries had had in Constantinople: “The Greeks led us to the building where they worship their God,” they wrote to the Prince, “and we knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth. For on earth there is no such splendor or such …

Reflections On The Red Sea Style: Beyond The Surface Of Coastal Architecture, Nancy Um
Reflections On The Red Sea Style: Beyond The Surface Of Coastal Architecture, Nancy Um
Art History Faculty Scholarship
In 1953, a British architect named Derek H. Matthews introduced the idea of “The Red Sea Style” in print, with a modest article of that title. Although brief and focused on a single site, this article proposed that the architecture around the rim of the Red Sea could be conceived of as a coherent and unified building category. Since then, those who have written about Red Sea port cities have generally accepted his suggestion of a shared architectural culture. Indeed, the houses of the region’s major ports, such as Suakin in modern-day Sudan, Massawa in Eritrea, Jidda and YanbuΚ al-BaΉr …
A History Of Named Places And Architectural Development: Rhode Island College, 1958-2012, Elizabeth Warburton
A History Of Named Places And Architectural Development: Rhode Island College, 1958-2012, Elizabeth Warburton
College Architecture
Elizabeth Warburton, an aluma of Rhode Island College, created this publication of the history of the buildings that make up the Rhode Island College campus. Its purpose is to bring to light the history of architecture of the campus. It is a metaphorical and visual story, telling the history and growth of the college and of its excellence in education programs. Complete with photographs of the buildings and those they were named for, Warburton demonstrates how the story of the college is told though its physical presence by listening to its places and buildings.
Social Interaction At The Maya Site Of Copan, Honduras: A Least Cost Approach To Configurational Analysis, Heather Richards-Rissetto
Social Interaction At The Maya Site Of Copan, Honduras: A Least Cost Approach To Configurational Analysis, Heather Richards-Rissetto
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
In this article, I employ least cost paths using GIS to measure the relationship between site configuration and social connectivity at the ancient Maya site of Copan, Honduras. I investigate two questions. First, did people of different social classes experience varying degrees of social connectivity? Second, did people living in different parts of the city experience difference degrees of social connectivity? Ultimately, the goal is modify traditional configurational analysis using least cost analysis (LCA) to identify how social hierarchy was embedded in landscapes and how ancient people may have strategically manipulated landscapes to structure social interaction and community organization.
Advancing The Human Right To Housing In Post-Katrina New Orleans: Discursive Opportunity Structures In Housing And Community Development, Leigh Graham
Publications and Research
In post-Katrina New Orleans, housing and community development (HCD) advocates clashed over the future of public housing. This case study examines the evolution of and limits to a human right to housing frame introduced by one nongovernmental organization (NGO). Ferree’s concept of the discursive opportunity structure and Bourdieu’s social field ground this NGO’s failure to advance a radical economic human rights frame, given its choice of a political inside strategy that opened up for HCD NGOs after Hurricane Katrina. Strategic and ideological differences within the field limited the efficacy of this rights-based frame, which was seen as politically radical and …

This Must Be The Place: A Return To The Borscht Belt, Ezra Glenn
Senior Projects Spring 2012
This Must Be the Place: a Return to the Borscht Belt
The Borscht Belt is a region in and around the Catskill Mountains, primarily in Sullivan and Ulster counties, which was once home to over 1,100 resorts, country clubs, golf courses, hotels, and bungalow colonies.
Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century, the first waves of Jewish immigrants arrived from Eastern Europe to New York City in droves. Small Jewish farming colonies that had sprung up in the mid-19th century began opening their doors to vacationers from the city as makeshift boarding houses, in order to supplement …

The reputation of attorneys has steadily declined over the last 50 years. How can we determine why this has occurred? Given the relatively high reputation of British Barristers, a comparison of US and British court room arrangement and practice may provide some clues, and the heuristic of "critical spatial studies" provides a methodology.
