SOLIDERE, Wa`d, and Nahr elBared Camp are three urban reconstruction projects in Lebanon that targeted neighborhoods destroyed through armed conflict in the 1970-80’s, 2006 and 2007 respectively. Even though these urban areas were produced over decades of multiple social interactions and economic considerations, reconstruction projects regenerates the whole area within contemporary political and social prerogatives, which may diminish the diversity of actors and discourses in the process. Along these lines the three projects illustrate three different approaches for urban production revealing a different relationship between the developer, the architect and the user community. Often associated with processes of healing, postwar re-construction projects may be less related to the pre-destruction phase than to the actual act of destruction. This, at least, is what the Lebanese case suggests. In this essay, we argue that the spatial erasure initiated by war destruction is consolidated during postwar reconstruction. We developed this argument by analyzing two of the main postwar reconstruction projects that have marked Beirut’s urbanization since the end of its civil war in 1990. The city of Mocha in Yemen was one of the most important Red Sea ports of the early modern Arab world, handling the trade of spices, textiles, metals, local aromatics and coffee beans. This essay examines the urban structures that governed the needs and practices of merchants in the city during the first half of the eighteenth century. This article introduces and analyzes the tomb of the Qāsimī Imām al-Mahdī Muhammad (r. 1686-1718) in the village of al-Mawāhib, northeast of Dhamār. Unlike many of the mosques and tombs associated with the other Zaydī imams of Yemen, al-Mahdī’s mausoleum has never been published, but merits close examination. While most historians consider his imamate to have been an era of both religious and political decline, this period was marked by increased cross-cultural interaction and artistic production. Despite its ruined modern state, the coral-built architecture of the island city of Suakin on Sudan's Red Sea coast is well known to scholars of vernacular architecture. For the past two years, five departments in ISU’s College of Design collaborated with the University’s Provost, the College’s Dean, Iowa businesses, and Iowa’s Main Street program to visualize and finance an interdisciplinary masters program in Historic Preservation. With the first phase of implementation complete this breakout session reviews a study that examines 1) how university programs in the arts and applied arts can collaborate with regional businesses and existing governmental agencies to secure external funding and 2) the key characteristics and essential strategies of a successful interdisciplinary and cross disciplinary collaboration.

This paper evaluates the interordinal web of international cultural property law as applied in the United States. The work explores problematic areas where law fails to adequately protect against illicit trade in cultural property from art to artifacts. The complexity in this area stems from the often opaque movements of cultural property and the overlapping legal regimes of foreign nation states and domestic federal and state laws. After evaluating the structure of these laws as applied in the United States, I propose solutions to improve coverage where lacunas exist.

Studies of buildings belonging to a subset of Modernist architecture, Brutalism, have included discussions pertaining to social and architectural history, critical reception, tectonic form and geometry inspirations, material property selections, period technology limitations, and migration of public perceptions. Evaluations of Brutalist buildings’ energy related performances have been restricted to anecdotal observations with particular focus on the building type’s poor thermal performance, a result of the preferred construction method, i.e. monolithic reinforced concrete used as structure, interior finish and exterior finish.
