Asian Indian Perceptions Of Normality: A Qualitative Study, Mohammed S. Lodhi Khan Dec 2005

Asian Indian Perceptions Of Normality: A Qualitative Study, Mohammed S. Lodhi Khan

Theses and Dissertations

Normal mental health has always been defined from a Euro-centric worldview that excludes non-Westem cultures. In fact, what is normal is biased against non-Westem cultural ideals that influenced the definition of mental health. The difference between Eastern and Western cultural values suggest that the two cultures may also have differing views on the definition of normal mental health. The most commonly accepted definition of normality currently in use in the West is based on the models of health, utopia, average, transactional systems, and pragmatism. However, people from non-European cultures, such as Asian Indians, may not be represented by these current …

An Industry Assessment: Are Aircraft Dispatchers In A Holding Pattern?, Georgiann Sailer Dec 2005

An Industry Assessment: Are Aircraft Dispatchers In A Holding Pattern?, Georgiann Sailer

Theses and Dissertations

This industry assessment provided an in-depth view of the aircraft dispatcher industry. An assessment of the industry was needed to project the future of the aircraft dispatcher profession, as well as indicate the necessity of additional aircraft dispatcher training facilities in the United States. The position of an aircraft dispatcher originated in 1938 as a result of numerous aircraft accidents. It was believed that the repeated accidents occurred due to the lack of ground assistance to the pilot, therefore a new Airman Certificate was created, the aircraft dispatcher certificate. Some of the duties of an aircraft dispatcher include aircraft navigation, …

Perceptions Of Elder Abuse Among Native American Seniors, Twyla B. Baker-Demaray Dec 2005

Perceptions Of Elder Abuse Among Native American Seniors, Twyla B. Baker-Demaray

Theses and Dissertations

Previous elder abuse research has focused much of its efforts on Caucasian populations, leaving a dearth of information for minorities. A particularly overlooked population has been American Indian and Alaska Native populations in the United States. Very few studies have been done on Native populations to assess incidence, types of abuse, and how elder abuse is managed. In June of 2004, the National Indian Council on Aging (NICOA) released the findings of its study on elder abuse in Indian Country, Preventing and Responding to Abuse of Elders in Indian Country. Prior to this writing, only three of the 567 federally …

The Impossibility Of Negation: Punk Rock, Christian Rock, And The Problem Of Negationist Subculture, Brian James Schill Dec 2005

The Impossibility Of Negation: Punk Rock, Christian Rock, And The Problem Of Negationist Subculture, Brian James Schill

Theses and Dissertations

Both the punk rock end Christian rock music subcultures have been the subject of analyses that cast them in “negationist” terms-as groups critically opposed to popular/secular culture. Despite their categorization of these music genres as antitheses, however, no analysis has gone so far as to read them specifically in the context of German philosopher GAV.F. Hegel whose dialectical model systematized the opposition of thesis and antithesis. Moreover, no analysis has juxtaposed the two suspiciously similar subcultures in dialectical terms, and theorized them in terms of their documented opposition to each other. Such is the goal of this thesis.

Therefore, beginning …

In-Group/Out-Group Dynamics Of Native American Mascot Endorsement, John Gonzalez Aug 2005

In-Group/Out-Group Dynamics Of Native American Mascot Endorsement, John Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

The use of Native American names and mascots by professional and college sports teams has become a controversial issue. However, very litde research has investigated attitudes towards Native Americans, regarding relationships between team names and mascots on prejudice and discrimination. This study proposed that the multiple social categories created by manipulating the endorsement/opposition of Native mascots by Native and White college students at a university with a Native mascot, would allow for the identification of possible prejudice and discrimination based on race and the mascot issue. It was hypothesized that the manipulation of Native American Mascot Endorsement (NAME) in Native …

Factors That Effect Prolonged Intubation Of Postoperative Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Patients, Sheri L. Triepke Aug 2005

Factors That Effect Prolonged Intubation Of Postoperative Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Patients, Sheri L. Triepke

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify contributing factors that cause coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients to remain intubated longer than eight hours. Current practice in CABG anesthesia advocates tracheal extubation within one to eight hours after surgery. With the advances made in anesthetic techniques and post-operative analgesia, the CABG population should consistently be extubated within the eight hour time frame.

A retrospective medical chart review of 30 CABG patients remaining intubated longer than eight hours was conducted. A study group of 30 patients extubated within eight hours was used for comparison.

The subjects reviewed for both groups …

Comparing North Dakota Certified Nurse Anesthetists To The Mott Children's Hospital Algorithm For Treatment Of Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting In The Pediatric Patient, Mary Bidegaray Aug 2005

Comparing North Dakota Certified Nurse Anesthetists To The Mott Children's Hospital Algorithm For Treatment Of Postoperative Nausea And Vomiting In The Pediatric Patient, Mary Bidegaray

Theses and Dissertations

Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) causes distress and anxiety to the pediatric patient. PONV can lead to dehydration, disruption of the incision site, delayed discharge and cause unanticipated hospitalization after ambulatory surgery. The reported incidence of PONV in children can be up to twice that of the adult patient. There are many different strategies used in treating or preventing pediatric PONV including pharmacologic, nonpharmacologic, homeopathic, and multi-modal therapies. Because of the complex nature of PONV, it is necessary to approach its treatment with a rational management. The purpose of this thesis was to compare different treatment techniques for PONV on …

Endovascular Repair Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Considerations In Anesthesia Nursing, Tammy Hoganson Aug 2005

Endovascular Repair Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Considerations In Anesthesia Nursing, Tammy Hoganson

Theses and Dissertations

The nature of the study involves endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms and anesthesia considerations. Endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm is a new, noninvasive procedure to repair abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Abdominal aortic aneurysm was once considered high risk with patients spending one to two weeks in the hospital following surgery. This new, less invasive procedure allows patients to go home in as little as two days. Along with new technology brings new challenges for the nurse anesthetist. The researcher will review current literature regarding AAA repair and involve the anesthesia care. The paper will review preoperative, intraopeative, and postoperative …

Predicting Body Mass Index In Northern Plains American Indian Children, Tami Jollie-Trottier Aug 2005

Predicting Body Mass Index In Northern Plains American Indian Children, Tami Jollie-Trottier

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity has become a major health concern for American Indians. Obesity prevalence is higher for minority groups, however American Indians consistently have higher rates than any other U.S. population. Of more concern is the trend towards higher rates of overweight and obesity in American Indian children. Obesity has been associated with many health concerns such as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes mellitus in both American Indian adults and children. The purpose of this study is to identify predictor variables that may be contributing to the development or possibly maintenance of obesity in American Indian children. …

A Comparison Of Cycle Ergometer Vo2max Test And On-Ice Aerobic Test On Und Women's Ice Hockey Team, Chia-Ying Lien

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the great increase in popularity of women’s ice hockey, it is important for coaches to have good testing and training methods in order to know their players’ on-ice fitness level. This study examined the correlation between the on-ice Reed Repeat Skating test (RSS) and the off-ice cycle ergometer VCtemax test on female collegiate ice hockey players. Twenty-one participants were tested on both tests but only fourteen participants’ data could be analyzed.

The results indicated that the off-ice V02max test was not significantly correlated to RSS drop-off index (r = -0.253) and total time (r = -0.480). Player’s age, …

Knowledge And Perception Of North Dakota Nurses Regarding Palliative Care, Nancy Joyner Aug 2005

Knowledge And Perception Of North Dakota Nurses Regarding Palliative Care, Nancy Joyner

Theses and Dissertations

Palliative care, also known as comfort care, involves the holistic care of patients when curative treatment is not effective. The principal factors of palliative care include the aggressive treatment of pain and other symptoms, including physical, psychological, emotional, social and spiritual problems. Nurses spend more time with patients and their families than any other health care professional, placing them in a position to provide palliative care in a variety of different settings. This requires nurses to have a sound knowledge base in this specialty. Not all nurses, however, are adequately prepared for or comfortable with palliative care.

The purpose of …

The Professionalization Of Naturopathic Medicine, Mindy Michelle Tyson Aug 2005

The Professionalization Of Naturopathic Medicine, Mindy Michelle Tyson

Theses and Dissertations

Use and interest in naturopathic medicine, a comprehensive alternative healing modality, has been on the increase in the United States for more than a decade. Proponents of the health discipline are working to move it from its current position as a partially professionalized heterodox medical system into mainstream medicine in the United States. Advocates for this form of primary care medicine claim that through its use of natural therapeutics and preventive medicine, naturopathic medicine has the ability to curb the ever- escalating costs of American health care and to slow the epidemic of preventable diseases occurring in the United States. …

Perceptions Of Nurse-Physician Collaboration: A Rural/Urban Comparison, Erin L. Gibbons May 2005

Perceptions Of Nurse-Physician Collaboration: A Rural/Urban Comparison, Erin L. Gibbons

Theses and Dissertations

Physicians and nurses are major members and central to the healthcare team, thus, it is reasonable to advocate for collaboration between these two disciplines. However, prior to this advocacy, it is essential to identify perceptions of collaboration among nurses and physicians before any possible interventions can be implemented. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare perceptions of nurse-physician collaboration among nurses and physicians in rural and urban hospital settings, settings that have not received prior research.

Thomas' conceptual model for collaboration guided this study. This model suggests a person uses one of five modes in resolving conflict: …

Perceptions Of North Dakota Registered Nurses Regarding Advance Directives, Nichole A. Fritel May 2005

Perceptions Of North Dakota Registered Nurses Regarding Advance Directives, Nichole A. Fritel

Theses and Dissertations

One of the functions of nurses is to assist individuals to achieve a peaceful death. In order to fulfill this role, patient end-of-life wishes must be communicated to family members and health care providers. Since passage of the Patient Self-Determination Act (PSDA) in 1990, advance directives have served as the legal vehicle and communication tool for bringing about an understanding of these wishes, should the patient be unable to competently speak for him/herself. Unfortunately, although the majority of Americans favor the provisions that living wills and health care powers of attorney contain, only a small fraction actually complete advance directives. …
